Work laptops aside, the last PC I owned started with an i486DX2-66, upgraded at great expense to a Pentium 200MHz (all early to mid-90s stuff), so things have moved on a lot. I decided to build my own PC primarily to run some virtual instrument software which loads large sample sets into the RAM. There are a lot of reviews out there on the 14th generation Intel CPUs and they are only a 'refresh' of the 13th gen, although the i7 is the one that has benefited from some additional cores. I have a 360 AIO cooler on it and tweaked the fan and pump speeds and don't get any thermal throttling with the package running up to 250W. I have swapped the stock retaining bracket on the motherboard for a contact frame based on reviews and recommendations. Overall I'm very happy and would stick with this CPU if I had to get another.

I bought an Intel i7-14700k on Feb 10. I put this CPU on three different motherboards, none of the three attemps successfully boot the BIOS system. I then spend tons of time debugging the whole pc system and finally brought the cpu to professional tech guys, the results are consistent - this is a dead CPU. I brought the CPU to BEST BUY today (March 8) and asked for a refund or replacement. They rejected it since it has pasted the 2-week due.I understand that this is BEST BUY's after-service policy, but this policy is not very reasonable and should be more flexible.
