This knife perfectly fits in where I need it to. Its smaller than my 8'' Chef's knife and also allows me to carry it in my pocket for quick paring and smaller prep tasks. I love the rounded spine that is really comfortable when you need to push down on a harder cut. Just feels great in my hand all around. I removed the cord from the knife waiting on a titanium bead to add to it. Also, the kydex sheath is grippy, but not so much that its difficult to remove. Perfect resistance in my opinion. If you are a chef that can't stand using bad knives at other peoples houses, or preps fun meals outside of your home this knife is perfect. My only complaint is the price, just a bit high when you are comparing it to top of the line chefs knives from Shun and others. perhaps ... MoreThis knife perfectly fits in where I need it to. Though, getting a USA made product with this much attention to detail and love made me pull the trigger. This knife will join my chapter tanto, and my ellis. We will be highlighting James on our podcast for all the incredible knives they are producing.Happy all around, keep killin it James!

Before I buy at least two more of these as gifts to friends, I want to mention that I would prefer a slightly longer handle and a finger groove before the sharpened blade. I own three James knives and I've cut myself within the first five minutes of handling all of them! How I can possibly keep the same edge on this particular knife is beyond my skills. The sheath is an interesting choice of material and probably works well in wet conditions. Here is New Mexico, I prefer leather. I think this knife is worth every penny: Beautifully made and rugged build.

It’s a very elegant, beautiful, well-balanced, and functional knife - it just feels like it was made for a child, or someone with very small hands, as if it’s a 3/4-size.The Carter, by contrast, has a shorter blade, but more substantial handle, and is more functional for me.The Hell Gap is so small that I’m worried to use it functionally, lest my hand slip past the heel. Will James Brand make a larger version?!

Nice tool. Good for digging, gardening, chopping small wood, hunting/fishing tool, self defense. It is small as a slicing/dicing/cooking knife. It is strong, balanced, easy to handle. It needs frequent sharpenning. It comes with a combination of sheath/scabbard that doesn't make sense. A small plastic scabbard protects the sharp edge, then everything goes into a big nylon sheath that seems for keeping pliers or screwdrivers. No quick drawing of the knife is possible, if necessary. I expected more, given the advertising diffused and price. I would reccomend it but at a lower price and with a real scabbard.
It's a nice looking knife, really nice lookingFeels good in my handNice ribbed section for your thumb to press onHole in the handle for a lanyard if you're into that sorta thingThe sheath sucks, it's just a 2 pieces of kydex sandwiched together with uneven rivets so you can't attach any sort of clip to it. Now after spending $275 on the knife I have to pay someone else to make a decent sheath so I can actually carry the knife.I preordered a black on black version and waited months for mine to show up late while I saw the silver versions show up on the website and sell out. The only difference between mine and the silver ones is cerakote, they should've fulfilled the preorders before releasing them for general sale. Now I know not to bother preordering from ... MoreIt's a nice looking knife, really nice lookingFeels good in my handNice ribbed section for your thumb to press onHole in the handle for a lanyard if you're into that sorta thingThe sheath sucks, it's just a 2 pieces of kydex sandwiched together with uneven rivets so you can't attach any sort of clip to it. In the kitchen it preps nicely for small dishes and does an exquisite job slicing meat and veggies. Probably won’t be a workhorse for your fancy as big dinners but it will be great for a table of one.Outside it has enough backbone for breaking down small game or clean and filet a nice bass. Maybe more if I could bag a deer at some point. The nicks albeit very small in the composite handle gave me pause. A high end knife should be perfection out of the box. That being said I didn’t buy this blade to be a trailer queen. It will get a solid pounding daily. I’ll check back in in a year and let ya know how it’s holding up.Nate@that_perfect_drift
Found this knife to be quite amazing right out of the box. Gave it a decent welcome, and to my chagrin found a very slight- repeat, slight- issue with the finish of the blade. Reached out to TJB and they agreed with me. Rushed me a replacement before my first purchase even made it back to their hq. Super impressed me with their handling of such a small problem that was likely user error. Huge to humor me thus. Now the knife itself performs beautifully. Yes, the handle is on the smaller end. Yes, the blade is more compact than a traditional full size chef’s knife. Owning both a German and French version of a chef’s knife I can tell you this bad boy will make it to many more destinations because of its smaller footprint and meal production will not suffer a bit. Owning both a German and French version of a chef’s knife I can tell you this bad boy will make it to many more destinations because of its smaller footprint and meal production will not suffer a bit. The size and sheath pair into a very packable item that can fit any bag, trunk or glovebox even. And contrary to some other reviews offered here, I did not find any problem preparing an entire Thanksgiving meal w my Hell’s Canyon. Yes, it diced veg for stuffing brilliantly but it even carved my turkey as well. It can and will do anything required of a chef’s knife while fitting into tighter spaces, be it luggage or animal cavity. All that with the backing of a brand that gives a funk about their products pleasing paying customers. I’m very satisfied with my new toy and am now a fan of the brand to boot. Can’t wait to get this piece further afield than my in-laws to test out it’s durability.
The title says it all. It will last a long time. The sheath is incredible, versatile. I only wish it would have come with a few suggestions how to lace. The knife? Used every day on the farm cutting balers twine, opening feed bags, you name it.
Balanced! Compact! Well made! I had to make a modification to the sheath because it would not hold the knife correctly and the knife would hv fallen out for sure. I would like to see some serration. That would make the perfect knife for me. Would I buy this again for 300.00 probably not! Add serrations and i probably would.
When I opened the box all I could say was wow. The presentation is nearly perfect and the knife itself is impeccable. Clean and well thought out.I’m a bit skeptical on the sheath. Thin Kydex and does not “click” when seating the knife within. Could have done a bit more on this, especially given this is marketed as an “outdoor” chef’s knife. Not sure I’d attach this to my belt or bag using this sheath. The blade is also a bit thin but admittedly, I’ve not used the knife yet so it could pose no issue at all.If you’re looking for a 3rd tool (e.g. bushcraft knife, small axe and then this item) for your outdoor pursuits then I think this is worth considering but you could probably do better for the same blade material in other options. All around looks like a solid ... MoreWhen I opened the box all I could say was wow.
