A movie in the making

OMG, I loved this book! Another superb debut from an Australian author and I hope only the beginning with many more to come. There was no messing around with characters and trying to be smart or different in the writing of this story. It is a straight down the line mystery novel with unexpected twists and turns as you progress. It is a movie in the making and I can only hope that it is set in the Australian bush rather than somewhere in America. After seeing Nicole Kidman so horribly miscast in Big Little Lies and the location changed to Monterey, I fervently hope that this would be filmed in Australia. It is a testament to the author's writing that I can visualise the scenery, the lay of the land and the characters. Definitely recommended reading for both sexes and ... MoreOMG, I loved this book! This book, The Dry is engage from the first page. It is set in outback Australia during a prolonged drought and captures the heat and dust, and the disappointment and despair of the town. There are undercurrents of suspicion and mistrust from a past unsolved crime. I recommend this book for any reader who enjoys a mystery, it is an enjoyable and satisfying read.

In love with Jane Harper's - The Dry
21 February 2021

One of the best books I have ever read. The Dry - Jane Harper. Quick page turner. Short chapters so you can pick it up and put it down in a hurry if you have too. Suspenseful. Heartfelt. Sad. Very Australian. Feel like you are in the book observing from the side. Looking forward to seeing the movie. Can't wait to read more from Jane Harper.

Jane Harper has nailed the Ausie crime thriller
27 October 2017

A novel needs strong characters. These are usually human, sometimes animal. They are rarely the condition of the weather or a whole town. In 'The Dry', Jane Harper manages to make of both the relentlessly hot drought and the oppressive rural Australian town two palpable characters that potently influence the thoughts and behaviours of the other, human, characters. The weather and the town are both portrayed as malevolent organisms. There are aspects of the novel that reminded me of The Dressmaker, especially the part played by the town and its attitude to the 'horrible' child who has returned as an adult, and the spectre of a cleansing and retributive fire. This book grabbed me - I had to read it in large chunks, and the last hundred pages in one final indulgence.

I avoided reading Jane Harper's 'The Dry' for a few years because there seemed to be just a tad too much hype about a debut novel. What a mistake! Then, having started the book, I was hooked. The hype had been well deserved. The prologue, as shocking as it was, served as a magnet for a crime story, but the book is much more than a generic crime fiction. It's a story of the human condition, with all of its ugliness and beauty, its cruel self-interest and astounding compassion. The environment of Kiewarra is harsh and punishing; the 'dry' both physical and psychological. It has devastated a community which has turned on itself, devouring and destroying its own people. The sins of the past have reduced them to a state of shame and denial and cruelty.Aaron Falk, a boy at the time of the first murder, has perhaps lost most of all ... his mother (who died in childbirth); his home and friends, when Ellie is killed and he and his father are run out of town, suspected of being involved in her death; and, finally, his father who failed tp suppress his own niggling suspicions about his son, thus causing a rift never to be repaired. Falk, drawn back to Kiewarra for the funeral of his childhood best friend, has every reason not to help the community escape the evil which is consuming it.Yet this is a novel of hope and forgiveness, of atonement and redemption. Harper's feather-light handing of these univesal and perennial themes is awe-inspiring.The resolution of the current crime is both explosive and breath-taking. The resolution of the historic crime comes so softly and gently, it is a breath of fresh air, literally and figuratively.

Phenomenal Reading Experience
28 June 2020

Phenomenal reading experience and to learn this was Jane Harper's debut novel is incredible and breathtaking. The descriptions of the dry land in Kiewarra, Australia due to a 2-year drought has the reader feeling the heat of the sun, the devastation of the lack of rain effecting each aspect of daily living, and the constant desire to have a cold bottle of water to quench one's thirst.I was particularly mesmerized by the intervals of italicized writing which allows the reader to learn about the past events that are so integral to understanding the investigation by Sergeant Greg Raco and Federal Police investigator Aaron Falk. Slow burn turning into a blazing fire.
5 July 2021

The novel held my interest through out. It was a slow burn which lead me in a direction I wasn't truly expecting. Constantly guessing each characters motives and history in a small country town affected by drought. Entertaining enough for a mystery crime novel. Well worth your time.

Vastly over-rated
11 July 2016

Read this on the plane to Darwin, barely stayed awake to finish it. The writer uses a sloppy and irritating device of italics to explain what has already happened, although sometimes slips back to normal text while in same back story mode which suggests sloppy editing to boot. Story is supposed to be about a major dry and burning heat but nothing in the narrative backs this up except the occasional reference to a drought. Description of bushfire shows zero understanding of something central to a key part of the plot and is totally without credibility. Plot is OK but damaged by device as noted and poorly unfolded, and dialogue is about high school standard. I needed to be stuck in my seat with no escape in order to stay to the end.
