I bought this from the York store, a friendly team that couldn't do more to help. I had heard the smaller Flip 5 and fell in love with it's punchy sound with a surprising bass extension given it's size. As we do a lot of travelling I thought the Charge 5 with it's power out would come in useful given all my family members have devices. The additional and smooth tweeter gave a noticeable sheen to every instrument and it definitely had extra warmth and bass-whump (probably not a real word) over it's little brother. It came in very useful for watching lap-top videos in the evenings, and in spite of being mono it absolutely nailed the powerhouse soundtrack so important in helping to create the emotional drama of S4 of Stranger Things (our nightly fix when indoors) and ... MoreI bought this from the York store, a friendly team that couldn't do more to help. Acoustic bass was very tuneful and was convincingly solid enough for me. So all-in-all a very chunky and well made product, no hesitation in recommending to this that hate the sounds from their tablets, phones and laptops!

I can’t offer an impartial review because so truly am a JBL fanboy. It started with the Go series and now that the battery life no longer suffices my needs I decided to go for a major upgrade. It’s disgustingly loud, bass-y and crisp at the same time. The audio quality is something to brag about for sure, coupled with the massive battery capacity and the ability to charge my other gadgets when I’m away from a power supply is priceless. I’m very interested in linking a few of these together in the future to create a true surround sound experience; which is easy to do using the JBL software associated with this series of speaker. Overall this thing is practically a companion to me and the camo suits my style to a T. Again, I’m a massive fan of JBL so I wouldn’t even look at another brand at this point, with the ability to link multiple units up seemlessly I don’t see why I would. My army of JBL’s is coming together nicely.

I bought 2 of these for use as portable home speakers. I thought that they would be good to stream music from my computer (I have a huge amount of music downloaded on my computer and want to use it as my home system base) and phone and I was planning on buying more speakers to fill a few rooms with sound. The voice activated speakers are deal breakers for me so I was attracted to these as they have no mic. Well, when I first got them and downloaded the JBL portable app they worked fine. I was able to use partyboost with my phone in stereo although I had to re-activate stereo mode each time I powered them on. They worked in partyboost mode with my computers Bluetooth. I was happy enough even though I was disappointed that stereo was not available with my computer. ... MoreI bought 2 of these for use as portable home speakers. Now partyboost won't work with the Bluetooth on my computer, only one speaker at a time works. Unfortunately I didn't do the research before I bought them as I now see it says that multiple speakers won't work with a computer. (They did before the software update, why change that JBL!?) I don't know why JBL would limit their products like that as there are other Bluetooth speakers that work under that stereo configuration with a computer perfectly AND you don't have to download an app, run that app AND set it up for stereo EVERY time you turn it on with your phone. The app is not available for a computer. (Insert head exploding emoji here!) Let alone the fact that it won't work with more than one speaker on a Bluetooth computer. I tried resetting them to factory default but alas once I had updated the software the damage was done. They sound ok for a small portable speaker however their limited functionality for my purpose has me returning them. Back to the drawing board, looking for a different company to supply my multi room speakers. Highly disappointed.

Good so far

Wanted to try newest of the "charge series". My first one was the "charge 2". It still works great and holds a long charge, its just not weather resistant and i thought newer version should sound better. They removed features from it that the charge 2 has such as microphone and when its paired to device the phone is no longer present for connectivity. I miss it only for listening to voice mails, not to hold a conversation through it.I haven't used it enough to see how well the battery holds up.The sound wasnt much different from charge 2 until i added their app and updated their firmware and that made a difference and it sounds punchier now.Wish it could pair up with the other two JBL speakers i have. Their "extreme" speaker battery is a joke. Replaced it once and it charges the same. Goes from dead to 3 of 5 lights as soon as its plugged in. Seems its more to do with their internal charge control board. I quit using it for the simple reason it needs to be plugged in too much.Hope this doesn’t happen to this "charge 5". Although it uses USB C port to charge it instead of an A/C power supply like their "extreme series" uses making it mostly unusable while outside or away.

Good sound and excellent build

As a speaker, I can't fault it for much. The build quality is great, the sound is pretty good and gets pretty loud, the battery bank feature is always useful, and the app allows you to tweak the equalization a bit and turn off the power on and bluetooth sounds. The frequency response favours bass above everything else, but only a narrow range of bass. If you have music with changes in bass pitch you can see the diaphragms on the sides resonating more or less as the frequency changes, so the sub-bass ends up kind of weak, and the volume will fade as the pitch moves away from that frequency. This speaker tends to under-perform with genres like DnB where there are often notes being played in the sub-bass to bass range. With the diaphragms you will also sometimes hear ... MoreAs a speaker, I can't fault it for much. This speaker tends to under-perform with genres like DnB where there are often notes being played in the sub-bass to bass range. With the diaphragms you will also sometimes hear it buzzing when playing frequencies that cause them to resonate strongly. However this feature does give the speaker some strength, and for most music featuring punchy kick drums this speaker will sound best. Hip-hop and dance music will probably benefit most from this. It also continues to sound good at various volumes, however some detail is lost from the softening effect of the diaphragms.A feature I wish it had was some kind of aux mode. Maybe it's a hidden feature that works through one of the USB ports, but it's nowhere in the documentation included in the box. So you must use bluetooth to connect your device.A bit silly that it lacks a 3.5mm jack when it is a decently big speaker.

Good speaker bad company

This review is less about the speaker, which so far for has worked quite well and does have some improvements from the charge 3 which is the only other jbl speaker I’ve owned. This review is about jbl deciding to adopt an apple business model without providing a good as unique or irreplaceable as an iphone. I put up with apple continually nickel and diming us as the iphone has changed many aspects of my life. My jbl speaker has not. The notes you’re pulling out of apples playbook; e.g. not providing a charging block, having severely diminished battery life after several years and the most recent which erodes the one true unique edge you once had over other speakers, not providing backwards compatibility in your switch from connect+ to partyboost. Truly a horrendous business move in my humble opinion as many other speaker brands now provide the ability to connect multiple speakers to play simultaneously, however they allow the user to do so across all older models. Making your own technology obsolete and thus competing with yourselves might provide some economic gain in the short term, but it crumbles the brand value you once had built in the minds of many. It’s a truly horrid trend that companies have picked up on, trying to make products that work just well enough to be relevant for several years before needing to be replaced. I enjoyed my first jbl speaker for several years and will enjoy the one I just purchased for the next several. After that, I’ll switch to a company who’s vision I can at least pretend to align with.

Love JBL products

We are steadily becoming a JBL family, it all started with my Charge 4 which I still have and love. I'm not enough of an audio nerd to notice any huge changes to the sound between the 4 and 5, I think it's a little cleaner on the 5 but both have very impressive projection for their size. Main reason for upgrading was because I wanted to connect two. My only disappointment with these speakers is that they don't retrospectively connect like the UE ones. So I either had to find a charge 4 which was no longer available or buy 2 charge 5s if I wanted them to connect. Definitely something to consider if you're going to buy one and consider getting another down the track, I'm hoping they stick with PartyBoost now that they've worked out the kinks but it could be planned ... MoreWe are steadily becoming a JBL family, it all started with my Charge 4 which I still have and love. Definitely something to consider if you're going to buy one and consider getting another down the track, I'm hoping they stick with PartyBoost now that they've worked out the kinks but it could be planned obsolescence. From what I gather online the PartyBoost is a genuine upgrade from its previous connectivity though. We have a double brick home and there are no connection issues at all between the two speakers, only when I started to take it further outside did one of the speakers start to struggle a little. Considering I'll never be using them this far apart this works well for me and I think is one of the best ranges on the market. Battery life on them is great, I haven't counted exact hours but I know that listening for a few hours in the evening means I'm only charging it once a week, twice with heavy use. Yet to test a full day with both of them connected but I imagine this will drain a little faster.App is also an improvement on previous versions. Very easy to connect them, I don't have to go to both speakers and press party boost and wait for them to sync. Just turn both on and then go to the app and it finds them for you and asks if you want to sync them. Very happy, hopefully won't need to buy anymore for a long time. My charge 4 is coming up to 3 years old now and going strong.

bought 2 charge 5 speakers to use at work. at first they were great. paired 1 speaker to my laptop and then linked both speakers together. later that night noticed both had an update so I proceeded to update both. was able to use them apart and linked all weekend and then Monday rolls around and i go to connect then to my laptop again and the partyboost link button on the speakers no longer work when connected to a pc. tried with my phone again and they worked just fine. factory reset the speakers and deleted them from the pc to again attempt to try and link them together and then connect Bluetooth to them with the pc and again the speakers wont link together. call customer support and they say the new firmware that was in the new update wont allow 2 speakers to ... Morebought 2 charge 5 speakers to use at work. at first they were great. paired 1 speaker to my laptop and then linked both speakers together. later that night noticed both had an update so I proceeded to update both. was able to use them apart and linked all weekend and then Monday rolls around and i go to connect then to my laptop again and the partyboost link button on the speakers no longer work when connected to a pc. tried with my phone again and they worked just fine. factory reset the speakers and deleted them from the pc to again attempt to try and link them together and then connect Bluetooth to them with the pc and again the speakers wont link together. call customer support and they say the new firmware that was in the new update wont allow 2 speakers to link when connected to pc. also started noticing that partyboost on the portable app no longer sees both speakers. tried resetting everything again and reconnecting the Bluetooth and same thing. really annoying that i purchased $300 in speakers so I could link them and it doesn't even work with pc's anymore with the new update. great sound quality from them. also the portable app is a joke. some serious improvements need to be made all around

Sounds Quality is Good, but Loss the Charge Charm

I had originally purchased a Charge 3 years ago. One of my brothers also had a 3. They are great for syncing together at family events and my other brother was the convinced to buy the Charge 4 and wanted to borrow mine. After trying to sync my 3 with his 4, I read up on upgrading the firmware to make it compatible with the 4 (Jbl Connect to Jbl Connect+). However my other brother with a 3 didn’t want to upgrade because he often synced his with a friend that still had Connect. After forgetting my Charge 3 at home while on a two week trip, I purchased a Charge 5 expecting it to be able to sync with others via Connect+. Im disappointed to discover that now there is another update that is not backwards compatible with syncing old models. Im disappointed to discover that now there is another update that is not backwards compatible with syncing old models. This was a main reason why i bought it. They other thing i really liked about the Charge 3 was the ability to use it as a external phone charger when needed. Unfortunately, while the Charge 5 does have a USB port for charging external devices, it doesn’t really work for the latest phones like iphone 13 Plus. Also the missing prev track and next track buttons. Overall, I would recommend anyone with a Charge 3 or 4 to stick with those models, because the charge feature is no better on the 5 and a slightly better sound quality doesn’t make up for the lack of backwards compatibility.
