A few issues that aren't worth the money.

The product is good overall, once you fix a few of the possible mishaps. The top where the filter screwed in leaked a little and I saw that others had the same issue. Also, the part that prevents the water from going back the way it came in is fragile and broke at one point. Lastly, when filtering the tap water, I saw that some of the black microfibers were still being pumped out even after filtering over 2 gallons of water. A bit concerning. Based on reviews and what I saw on my own, the product is not consistent with its manufacturing. The amount of money is not worth the risk and i wished a bought a more reliable product.

Purchased May 29, 2022 for a two person 5 day backpack hiking trip of the Catawba Triple Crown in Southern Virginia (June 12-17). I was very happy with the unit as the streams were running slow, but clear and made the water filtering process easy. On day 4 when using the filter, the inlet fitting with the check valve blew off the cartridge housing. We were able to find the check valve and continue using the filter by forcibly holding the fitting in place while pumping… very slow and tiring and barely functional but got us through the last day. Katadyn discovered that the ultrasonic weld for this fitting were defective and supposedly improved the process and inspection. I asked if there was an identifier to show an old version verse new. Apparently, there is not. Not sure if it is related to the date of manufacture but the date stamp on the instructions included in the packaging is February 2019. Since there has been no product recall, I suppose it is “buyer beware”.Update July 2022 - Katadyn sent me a new body. Can't see any modification. Will need to test in the field (bringing tabs as back up).

Essential for overnight trips.

This pump is good for filtering large amounts of water fairy quick. It is simple and easy to use. The quick connect adapters make it easy to pump water straight into a hydration pack without having to take the hydration pack out of your backpack. The Nalgene adapter is nice but I usually leave it at home. It isn't too heavy and packs easily. Water tastes great, however, my experience is only from high alpine sources with clear water.I have brought this as the only water source for backpacking groups of about four and it was perfect. It is easy to clean but it takes a long time to dry for longterm storage.Be sure to be somewhat gentle while pumping as I have seen the handle snap on one of them. This is a great piece of gear and an essential for your kit on ... MoreThis pump is good for filtering large amounts of water fairy quick. Great when it works, but subject to failure.
2 August 2021

When this product works, it is simple to use and the water quality and taste is excellent. Unfortunately, the product is unreliable. There is a back flow valve on the intake side of the pump that breaks easily. On my first outing with the Katadyn Hiker, leading a group of 6 in the wilderness, the back flow valve failed after pumping no more than 15l of water. At that point the pump is rendered useless, so we switched to our backup purification tablets for the remainder of the trip (Ugh, nasty tasting). The valve is not serviceable in the field and requires replacement of the pump housing to correct the failure. Katadyn Customer Service Dept was very helpful. After the housing replacement, the filter unit worked fine on my next 2 outings, producing safe and great tasting water. On the 2nd day of my 4th outing, the valve failed again. This is in clear water under light use - no more than 6l/day. An unreliable system is a safety issue in the wilderness, so I have to give the Katadyn Hiker a grade of 1.

Intake Fitting Broke Away From Housing
4 October 2022

First off, before this water filter broke, it worked excellent; so well in fact, that two of my hiking buddies bought one. But after about a dozen backpacking trips, the intake fitting, the projection that has the disconnect, broke out of the filter body, essentially rendering the filter useless. It appeared to have been marginally glued into place. It strikes me as a weak point in design, especially how it sticks out off the body so it can be bumped around in my pack, which likely happened. I tried re-gluing it, but left a gap and do to air leakage, proved unsuccessful. What did I do next? I bought the Hiker, the non Pro model. And its a bit cheaper. It doesn’t have the part with the disconnect that broke loose, but still works just as well as the Hiker Pro.

Is it production consistency that kills this?
18 April 2022

Probably the best filter for 1 - 2 person backpacking this side of $200. Unfortunately it has fatal flaws. I have had two of these now. The first had the intake quick disconnect pop out. No broken plastic, just the glue/epoxy "let go". The second was misshapen at the top where the filter screws in. So there was never a good tight seal and it leaked water the whole trip on North Manitou.Lot's of good reviews for this filter. I want it to work and last. There just isn't another that matches it's weight, pumping speed, field service, or form factor in this price range.

Not like the pump of old!
20 September 2022

A very long time ago, I used to own a ceramic pump filter that didn't even have the micron filtation this one has. That previous filter made me vow to never own a pump filter ever again!! I have a multitude of filters at my disposal and on a recent trip, my BeFree filter stopped working without warning. I borrowed my friends Hiker Pro which he has had for years and absolutely loved It. It pumps quite quickly and almost effortlessly. I do find that if you can scoop up water into a vessel to pump from, it works even better! I use a pan that I am going to boil water in anyhow, so no worries of cross container contamination. I just got a sweet price on this and an extra filter to stow away in case this filter ever discontinued.

Reliable, lightweight filter
16 December 2022

I bought this filter as a replacement for a Katadyn Hiker Pro that I've used for backpacking for the last five years. The Hiker Pro works well and is fairly light. It's a little bulky in the backpack, but it works so well and delivers drinkable water so quickly that it's a fair trade-off. I've used the Hiker Pro on 50+ hiking trips to filter murky, still water from alpine lakes in the Western U.S. and in clear running water in creeks, and have never had any g.i or other health problems. The filter is easy to disassemble for cleaning, and I only replaced my old Hiker Pro because the microfilter's fibers had become too dirty to use effectively. Overall, I highly recommend.

Thinking this likes mountain stream water best?
24 June 2022

We had two of these brand new off the shelf (one was to be a backup) for a week canoe adventure. This was on the Green River in CNP. We had buckets to let the water silt separate for a while (pumping mostly clear water). There seems to be just enough fine silt to start clogging up the filter? We got thru about 7-8 gallons before the pumping got to be a physical activity. Busted out the spare (2nd pump) and it made it about the same distance. Also noticed that the water was a bit colored from the later pumped gallons.

Works great until it cracks and dies
19 September 2022

Worked well for about 4 different trips. Bought a brand new filter for my trip to the BWCA.Started getting hard to pump on the 3rd day and then exploded on the 4th day. Cracked itself all the way around rendering itself useless. Had to resort to boiling water to get out of the wilderness. Filter appeared clean and there was no blockage I could see anywhere. Shame that it can't keep itself free of dirt or be durable enough to survive more pressure. Should be made out of metal or have a better screen.Overall -- poor fragile design that I guess is intended to sell you on their $400 metal version. Vital equipment shouldnt be so cheap and fragile. Stay away. Or bring a backup.
