I have been using these shoes almost every day for two months to hike in northeast US temperate forests and fields. I hike 1-2 hours per day, carrying a day pack (maybe 10-12 pounds). I weigh over 200lbs, so the shoes do get a pretty good workout when i hike in them.I chose these shoes to use during summer months when a full boot is too hot to wear. I waited to review them until I got some miles under them. At this point, I have worn them in nearly every non-disaster condition you can find in my area. Hills, fields, rocks, wet rocks, steep rocks, boulders, sand, mud, deep mud. wet sloppy mud, shallow creeks, puddles, grass, tall grass, bushwhacking underbrush, worn thick roots on trails, wet leaves, you name it. These shoes have never let me down. I've never once ... MoreI have been using these shoes almost every day for two months to hike in northeast US temperate forests and fields. These shoes have never let me down. I've never once felt like i did not have great traction. The support is also excellent, a very firm bed that still allows for good "feel" for the ground. The waterproof nature has worked perfectly. After a long slog through dewy early morning tall grass, the outside of the shoe is dripping wet, but my foot and sock are totally dry. After a strenuous hike, same thing, showing that it still manages to exhaust perspiration moisture without allowing water to infiltrate inside. The shoes are amazingly durable. They still look brand new after about sixty hikes. I usually straddle a size 13 or 14, depending.Based on reviews and comments about the sizing, I ordered the "wide" size 14 and that has been perfect for me. I have just enough room to be comfortable side to side, without the shoe being loose or sloppy. These shoes have really delivered. I could not ask for more from them. I may buy a second pair just to "put away" in case they ever become discontinued, but i'm not sure i will need them, since this pair is holding up really really well.

When I first tried them on in store, I noticed the changes right away . Different (cheaper? soles), and my heels kept slipping as I stepped. I decided against the Oboz purchase and got the Salomon X Ultra quick lace - which gave me blisters on a 2 mi walk around neighborhood. Decided reason was not tight enough laces and was managing ok until a 10 mi Whites hike changed all of that and could not make them comfortable at all. Returned Salomon’s and quickly decided on Obox X low sawtooth. But this shoe does not fit right. Every step it feels like I’m stepping out of the heel. The upper seems shorter and tightening them to account for heel slippage makes feet hurt. I’ve tried to like them and make them work but can’t see anyway I’m taking these on a real hike. I do not like the new changes in design, primarily with the fit but also the sole differences. Does Oboz have any recommendations on fixing the heel? Clearly I’m not the only one having issues with them. And for $160, they should be perfect!

Bought these to replace Firebrand II that I bought four years prior that had little tread left. The Sawtooth X are functional but badly damaged in less than a year under similar use conditions.Be aware, the toe on these boots are not meant for too much contact with rocks/steps, the soles seem better suited for smoother terrain. I have missing chunks of the sole that I'm guessing tore out on some rock somewhere. l'll cover the holes with some glue for now, the outer toe material (leather) is tore up and will get glued too.My Firebrand II were terrific boots, durable, handled all terrain well and comfortably for multiple seasons/backpacking trips and countless miles, these for me not so much. My 7 year love affair with Oboz ended in the spring of ’24 on the Camino Frances. Less than two weeks on the Camino, the toe stitching on the right shoe began to give way. After a rainy ten miles into Campanareya, I was forced to find a ferreterĂa where I purchased an adhesive to hopefully get me through the rest of the journey. Speaking of rain, these shoes are rated as waterproof. As the late comic John Pinette would say, “Nay, nay”. On the cold, windswept and rainy first day, despite wearing my OR gaiters, my feet got soaked. This happened repeatedly during the 800 Kms of the Camino. A word about Oboz’s decison to go with proprietary soles instead of continuing with Vibram. IMHO, a disaster! It made the descents to Zubiri, Molinaseca and Triacastela far more ... MoreMy 7 year love affair with Oboz ended in the spring of ’24 on the Camino Frances. A word about Oboz’s decison to go with proprietary soles instead of continuing with Vibram. IMHO, a disaster! It made the descents to Zubiri, Molinaseca and Triacastela far more dangerous albeit exciting than necessary or desired. I have since replaced these with another brand with Vibram’s latest sole. What a difference! The interior lining of both shoes also began breaking down far too soon. This love affair lasted for some time, but still ended too soon. Not to give up on a garment, I have repurposed the shoes for working around the homestead.
I needed a replacement for my old Keen, wide toe, sneakers that were delaminating. These looked like a good substitute. I ordered them in a size 8.5, which is typically on the large size for me. My foot size is slightly over an 8. 8.25 would be perfect but 8 is too tight. When I received these Oboz I could barely get them on. They were so narrow that, once my foot had wriggled into the shoe, there was barely enough lace to tie them up. I returned them in person at an REI store. I was told that this is a common occurrence with Oboz shoes. The store did not have an 8.5. Rather than take a chance on a second order I took the refund. I didn't want a heavy weight waffle stomper, mud collector "hiking" shoe in the first place. Just a walk-about sneaker for every day. Yeah here I am, get off my lawn old guy complaining about change. I've been through 4-5 pairs of original Sawtooths, can't remember exact number... well because I'm the old guy. Just tried on the new Sawtooth X at my local camping/ outdoor store. Tried the same size I've always worn 11.5 regular, I have a narrow foot and the old Sawtooth was a perfect out of the box fit. New Sawtooth fit feels different it feels tight on both feet, especially my right foot, it feels narrower. I tried on a 12 it seemed slightly better but counter intuitive that I would have to change shoe size. I thought maybe because I've been wearing my old Sawtooths for 2 years and they had worn/stretched out, that might be the reason for a different feel so I took a chance and purchased the 11.5 ... MoreYeah here I am, get off my lawn old guy complaining about change. I thought maybe because I've been wearing my old Sawtooths for 2 years and they had worn/stretched out, that might be the reason for a different feel so I took a chance and purchased the 11.5 and brought them home. I've worn them around the house for a couple of hours, and they still feel too narrow, I even put on a lighter pair of wool socks to see if that was the issue and it hasn't helped. Came to the Oboz site and was relieved to see they still have some original Sawtooth's in stock and ordered a pair. I see there is an ongoing shoe lace discussion with these reviews and have to laugh. I was excited to see the Sawtooth X has flat shoe laces, my only complaint with the original shoe was the round laces that constantly would come untied. I see in the reviews Oboz responded that was their consistent complaint about the Sawtooth originals, I guess I'm not alone. Oboz makes a great product and I'm confident the Sawtooth X will be a great performer for many folks who the shoe comfortably fits, unfortunatley that's not me.
So far I'm blown away with this shoe's performance. I had a pair of Keen hiking shoes that have served me well for 8 years, but the inner cushioning had hardened and I could not jog in them without leg pain. I bought these and immediately went for a 3 mile hike with them, and the difference was night and day. Excellent grip, feels nice and snug to my foot without constraining, and there is great flex at the front of the shoe. I'm a nordic skier, and being able to balance on the front portion of your foot (heel raised) is an important aspect of nordic skiing, and these shoes allow me to practice that formwork during the spring, summer and fall. Took them for another hike a few days later and they feel like a million bucks. Would certainly recommend!
I bought these at end-of-season just so I had this second color in what is the best fitting day hiker I have ever worn. I vacationed in my neutral/buff colored Sawtooth X, and found myself wishing to look a bit more “coordinated” with color, as unnecessary as that actually is. I was dressed in charcoal/gray and black, and had my buff colored Sawtooth X pair on. It was only because I knew they come in charcoal that I thought to get a pair to alternate with to give the buff ones a “day off” and dry out if need be. I ALSO wanted a second pair to make sure I have these incredible hikers for as long as possible. My foot relaxed and felt ultimate support and comfort. These new charcoal Sawtooth X’s are my fourth pair of Oboz. They are my perfect day hiker. I also have the mid/high versions as well for any longer, tougher treks.
This has been my experience sizing Oboz Sawtooth X Low B-Dry shoes (men's).My feet are medium, somewhere in the C - D range. I have learned the hard way that to walk long distances in any measure of sustained comfort, my shoes need to have ample room in the toe box area. However, a problem I often encounter is that shoes that have sufficient room up front also tend to be too loose in the heel, while shoes that fit nicely in the heel are often too tight in the toe. With this in mind, I ordered these shoes in both a Medium and in a Wide size. The result was that both pairs fit about the same in the heel; I couldn't feel any noticeable difference between them. However, the Medium's were clearly too cramped in the toe box. I kept the Wide pair and returned the other one...For what it's worth, if you have Medium feet and want a roomy toe box, my recommendation would be get the Wide. You can always fine tune the fit by experimenting with different socks. Also, on long trails most people's feet expand somewhat. Your feet in the field will not be the same as they are in the store or at home. To allow a bit of extra room for this, I would suggest ordering at least one size larger than your normal everyday street shoes.I have not gone anywhere in the shoes yet, so I can't comment on how they do on the trail at this point. These Sawtooth X's are comfortable and sturdy, so with the sizing sorted out, I am confident they will prove to be a good pair of shoes for long trips. I hope this helps. Happy trails. Cheers
I have had these shoes for six months and I've used them on day hikes on established trails. I'm pretty satisfied with my purchase and I think they are good choice for hikers that want a solid waterproof shoe and are prepared to sacrifice weight for a shoe that offers more support and durability. The good: very well made, good true fit, excellent traction and support. The drawbacks, it took several moderate day hikes to break in, stiff sole and weight. These shoes have more of a "boot" feel so take that into account. Personally, I think they are bit heavy for most summer and autumn day hiking in southern California. I think they would work for overnight backing trips with a moderate pack.
