Before I start with my review, I would like to bring attention to the fact that this product IS NOT WATERPROOF despite xcite's claim to the contrary:I ordered more than one of these devices on two separate occasions (edit: 3 ocasions, once in person at xcite). On all occasions, the devices I received were the Ad-supported Kindle basic 10th gen instead of the claimed paperwhite. I know this because of the it is indicated on the packaging and the serial numbers.Since this is not the paperwhite, It is NOT water proof! Now on to my review of the device itself:This Kindle Basic is great as long as you don't connect it to the Internet. It has amazing battery life. It appears as a normal USB device when connected to your PC. It can read PDFs but not ePUB files. Luckily, you can convert ePUB files to .mobi files using the free and opensource Calibre software.Another nice aspect of the kindle is that it allows you to access your highlights and notes very easily. The downsides of the Basic is its low screen resolution which is fine for ePUB and verry small PDFs, but for viewing most PDFs, this device is useless. The kindle is not capable of reflowing text in PDFs as far as I can tell.Another downside of the kindle is the shady tricks it uses to trick you into connecting to the internet. When you start your kindle for the first time, it will require you to connect to a wifi network without giving you any option to skip. What you need to do is to connect to your wifi but use an incorrect password. Once the kindle has failed to connect once, it will allow you to skip network setup. All in all, I recommend buying it if you're aware of both what this product actually is and what its limitations are. If you're basing your decision on this product's description, then don't buy it. You'll only be thoroughly disappointed. Also it goes without saying: Don't use this device in the bathtub.Note: this review was edited at the request of xcite or their partners.

Getting the cons out of the way first, this base model does have a low resolution screen that is not really suited for books like comics and manga on top of obviously not having color due to it being a low-end e-ink display. The user interface can be a bit clunky and not the smoothest to navigate, especially with the display being not exactly the quickest horse in the race due to it being (once again) a low-end e-ink display as well as having a low-end processor. It doesn't have most of the benefits the paperwhite models have such as better front-lighting, water-proofing, and a higher resolution screen, so I would say that's your best option if you can get one cheap enough. I happen to read a lot of light novels and this works completely fine for basic text. I've ... I've also yet to charge it since the first night I got it in the mail (over a week now) and it just hit 40% battery last night after using it a few hours every day during car rides so absolutely no complaints there. I managed to get pick this up for only $60 and I would say that for me personally, this model is well worth getting at the $40-$60 range if you plan on reading text-only books on it but I myself might actually upgrade to a paperwhite if I manage to find one around $80 or less for manga consumption. TL;DR - Get the basic model cheap for basic text-based books, get a paperwhite for books with a lot of images and for water-proofing.

I was somewhat hesitant to purchase it initially, as I prefer the feel of a book - being able to physically turn the pages etc. Plus it seemed like yet another screen in my life. However, the ability to store thousands of books makes a lot of sense to me - it enables you to take your entire library with you wherever you go (to bed, in the bath, on holiday, on the road etc). Then I discovered that the device is surprisingly light and small (fits in one hand easily). This was probably the biggest surprise for me - it's lighter than many books! So it made reading very easy as well.I also realize that the "yet another screen" idea was unfounded - the screen doesn't feel like one. It actually DOES feel like you are looking at print on paper, so yet another pleasant surprise. It keeps it's charge for weeks, even when it's not turned off (it displays it's "screen saver"), and is easy to read in any kind of lighting environment.Being able to adjust font size and type will likely be a huge bonus for those that normally need reading glasses, or just prefer not straining their eyes.Navigating Amazon to find new books isn't as good, as scrolling up/down "jumps" a little, so recommend getting them via PC first, and then sending the book to your Kindle via your dedicated Kindle email address. As far as I'm aware, unfortunately it doesn't work with the Wellington City Council library, which is a shame, as it would be wonderful to also be able to borrow books from there, and read on your Kindle.Overall, highly recommend purchasing this product, particularly if you are voracious reader!

I bought this as I wanted to see what the new touch-screen, back-lit Kindles were like. I've had a Kindle 4 (with buttons) for many, many years and love it. Although this Paperwhite is a very nice machine, and I do like it, Amazon have really messed it up! On my other Kindle I've always used Calibre to look after my ebook collection, creating book collections and series which get transferred to the Kindle 4 making it easy to negotiate my large library. Amazon, in their infinite wisdom, have locked down the Paperwhite so that the Collections plugin in Calibre can no longer create them on the Paperwhite! The Paperwhite just shows pages and pages of book covers making it difficult to find the one you want. In conclusion, the Paperwhite in a very nice ebook reader, just ... I purchased my kindle on sale and I love it. It’s small, lightweight, portable, and comfortable to hold for long reading sessions. I really wanted an e-reader but didn’t want to spend $140+ on the paperwhite. While this one isn’t waterproof, I don’t anticipate reading in the rain or bath. One downside is that the backlight doesn’t have an option to adjust the warmth, so reading in low light sometimes isn’t the best experience. This version also doesn’t have a dark mode option to invert the text and background color. Those details aside, I really like this product. Hopefully in a few years the baseline kindle model adds warmth to its backlight.
It's small but I'm getting used to it and it's easy to hold. (I still lick my finger when I go to turn the page). I had to buy a cover for it separately. Also the charging on my computer takes forever so I used the power adapter for my cell phone so I could charge directly from the wall outlet instead of the computer and I get a faster charge. I'm happy with it. I am book junkie and this works for me. With kindle unlimited I'll never run out of something to read. The longer you read each day the more you will have to recharge, but for stop and go readers it lasts a long time. Get a cover so you don't bang it up or scratch up the screen like a cellphone. If I ever get another, I might like a little larger screen so I wouldn't have to turn the page so often. (Lot's of ... MoreIt's small but I'm getting used to it and it's easy to hold. My wife had used a Kindle Paperwhite reader for several years and encouraged me to get my own. However, I didn't want to spend the extra money so I considered going with the less expensive Kindle instead. When it went on sale prior to the holidays, I jumped at the chance to pick it up. This Kindle has worked flawlessly since and is a constant companion for me. I especially like the clear screen and very long battery life. I can keep it with me on short and long trips. I used to read e-books on my tablet computer but the Kindle has replaced the computer. The 8GB of storage has ample space for a lot of books; way more than I keep loaded at a time. Highly recommended!
I wanted to read more books but didnt have the storage for them so I bought this kindle paperwhite. I've found the paperwhite to be light, easy on the eyes and to have a very long lasting battery. I can hold the kindle paperwhite with one hand for extended periods of time but eventually revert to holding it with two hands or using a pillow pad/tablet stand. I love being able to have ads on the kindle to see new book recommendations and find ebook deals up to 80% off. In the end I only buy ebooks for $2-$4 and have so far read 2 books since owning it.Traveling with the kindle was far better than having a big bulky tablet or laptop to entertain me on a flight. Having a kindle has so many benefits, where do I begin...1) Adjustable font and backlight make reading more comfortable2) Stores more books than I can probably read in my lifetime3) Battery lasts for ages, not really something I ever worry about4) You can take as many books with you as you please5) Get books delivered in seconds6) Ebooks are almost always cheaper and save paper7) You can use Readwise to have your kindle highlights emailed to you to remind you of your favorite parts of your books8) Free ebooks9) Goodreads can sync with your kindle automatically to track what you are reading, and can recommend new books to you based on what you are reading10) Able to save space on bookshelves
