October 22, 2017 at 4:41 pmI bought a Massdrop Klymit Static V last year, as a replacement for my trusty ThermaRest Z-Fold. I avoided inflatables because I liked the fold-and-go of the Z-fold, as well as the fact that it’s essentially bullet proof. I took a chance on the Static V because of the price. I was looking for something to keep me warmer, and I certainly didn’t mind the additional comfort. I am thrilled with the Static V. I’ve used on on several winter weekend trips and I slept much better.I did have a deflation problem. It was a very slow leak that would usually have me near, but not on the ground by morning. I couldn’t find the leak no matter despite every trick I know from fixing bike tubes. Okay first of all I would like to say I have been using klymit pads for years now I loved it. But they are not Lite in weight. So when I saw this I was excited because I am starting to do some backpacking, because I was able to get a large I figured it would be a better pad for me. I did not read description well and was very surprised to see that the large was no wider than the regular after I had ordered. But I figured that 19 ounces for a large I was in I would deal with it. My large had arrived yesterday weighing 24 oz instead of 19 Oz as stated on the website. Also it was not 20 inches wide but 26. I was grateful for the extra 6 in I was not grateful for the extra 6 oz! As advertised, this is a super lightweight, quite comfy warm sleepmat. I'm yet to take it where it's really cold, but it was noticeably warmer than my old setup (old , flat, thin "self inflating" thermarest). It also packs up really small. All up, it's about 1/3 the weight & 1/4 of the size of my old sleep mat (when packed up). When set up, it's significantly thicker than my old mat and only marginally narrower.Having said that, TBH, I was slightly disappointed with this sleep mat. Despite all the good points I've already noted, it's narrower than I expected. I had read numerous reviews of what I believed to be this same mat elsewhere that had noted it was "slightly wider than usual" and so I expected it to be wider than it was. I had read numerous reviews of what I believed to be this same mat elsewhere that had noted it was "slightly wider than usual" and so I expected it to be wider than it was. Obviously that's my dumb fault for not double checking dimensions - it looks like the one I had been looking at elsewhere was the "STATIC V LITE LIGHTWEIGHT" - whereas the one I got was the "INSULATED V ULTRALITE SL LIGHTWEIGHT" (3 inches narrower! - That's a lot!). I was also somewhat disappointed with the "side rails" - they are an improvement on my old (flat) mat, but make much less difference keeping me on the mat overnight than the marketing material suggested...As I move around a fair bit in my sleep (and regularly woke up numerous times during the night having slid off my old mat) I had hoped that this mat may also improve the quality of my sleep when hiking. I've only used it a few night so far and I'd say it does re warmth and general comfort. But the narrowness, plus the fact the side rails don't work quite as well as I'd hoped, I still managed to roll/slide off this one fairly easily and woke multiple times at least partially off the mat. This one also seemed to be a bit more "slippery" on my tent floor (a couple of times, the mat had slid down the tent leaving my head still on my pillow, but my shoulder on the ground). In fairness to Klymit, this mat is great. But it just didn't quite live up to my (possibly unreasonable) expectations...

A little disappointed at this product.I own two Klymit Pads (Insulated and Static V2 Ultralight) and this one is a definite downgrade for me. Both of the regular pads I currently own are great, and I will continue using those and not this. I have a couple huge problems with this one.1) Since it is named Klymit Static UL I assumed the dimensions would be the same, however it is 3 inches smaller in width. That extra 3 inches in width means a huge difference for me as I am a wide built (athletic male). It is the difference between freezing cold arms and legs during the night. This is admittedly part of my fault. I should have looked at the description, however I assumed since it had the same product name and just Massdrop branding it would be the same. Maybe it's ... MoreA little disappointed at this product.I own two Klymit Pads (Insulated and Static V2 Ultralight) and this one is a definite downgrade for me. Maybe it's the same version as the Static V1 UL? Who knows...2) The material is REALLY slick. Also a big negative for me. I toss and turn in my sleep and the pad tends fall out from under me, once every hour or so. This leaves me cold and with a really bad night of sleep. That sticky coating doesn't really make a difference with this material. Too slippery for me.Sure it's lightweight and packs down small, but I wish I wouldn't have purchased it. I'd rather stick to my V2 Static UL or Insulated version. It might work for others, but it is a huge downgrade for me. Wish I could return it.
Before I get into my review, I want to clarify that I have not had the opportunity to extensively test it yet. I have only done a cursory evaluation due to not having spent a night out in the wild with it.First impressions: this pad is comfortable, affordable and I can see myself enjoying it for a long time. Initially sitting down on it it did bottom out (but I'm a big guy 6'1", 111kg) but lying down and distributing my weight across its length it supported me fully. I'm a side sleeper, so I was concerned about whether my hops and shoulder would end up touching the ground but there was no problem what so ever in that regard, I was pleasantly surprised that it fully supported me and was extremely comfortable. It has a stated R value of 4.4 and I have heard that to ... MoreBefore I get into my review, I want to clarify that I have not had the opportunity to extensively test it yet. I'm a side sleeper, so I was concerned about whether my hops and shoulder would end up touching the ground but there was no problem what so ever in that regard, I was pleasantly surprised that it fully supported me and was extremely comfortable. It has a stated R value of 4.4 and I have heard that to fully benefit from this you need a full sleeping bag that will fill in the troughs/channels preserving the loft of the bag in those areas and keeping you warm. A quilt won't provide that benefit and you might find yourself sleeping colder as a result so if you are a quilter it might be better to go for a more traditional design like the thermarest neoair xlight or a big agnes etc. The main advantage of the Klymit insulated V though is that you don't get the crinkly sound when you move around, this one is extremely quiet and the side rails mean you aren't likely to roll off either. The price and ultimate value for money was the biggest draw for me and I really do feel you are getting an incredible sleeping pad for the price with this item. Is it a perfect pad? no, but it is great and has some advantages over some much more established (and expensive) pads. It's easy to inflate, it's quick and easy to deflate (unlike previous Klymit models), it has a high R value if used in conjunction with a good sleeping bag, and while it's not the lightest pad it is still respectably low weight.Overall, I'm really happy with this pad and it won out over some of the more expensive options out there based on my needs and what I wanted in terms of features... I would definitely recommend it as an option if your preferences are similar to mine.
Review based on 5 nights on trail: Nice. Does the job. Decent weight, compact, warm enough. I like the full length. Pretty comfortable, even sleeping right on the pad. Quiet. Lost some air, even with refills, from day 1, but not so bad. At this cost, it's good value. Not sure how you'd do much better at this price point (I'm open to suggestions!).Update 12-11-2020: Another dozen nights on this sleeping pad. Continues to be a solid performing pad. It holds its own in packability, warmth, and comfort. Pad in stuff sack weighs 18.9oz. Feels wider than it measures, when in use. Good height (not to high or tippy).Comparison with Z-Lite: A dramatic improvement in comfort and warmth with the Klymit. My aging hips, shoulders, and knees *really* appreciate the upgrade over foam pad. No comparison, and worth every penny. Also much warmer getting up off the ground. Feels like about 10-15*F to sleep system.Comparison with Neoair X-Lite: The far pricier pad earns its keep, in my view. X-lite is more comfortable and warmer. In comfort, it is a more even sleeping surface, with more give at the pressure points. Just a cushier setup. And Xlite is warmer (subjectively, by maybe 5*F or so). Xlite also takes nearly twice as much breath to inflate (15-18). I'm winded when not using pump sack, while the Klymit is very easy and quick to inflate - 7-8 easy puffs. Klymit feels a bit wider, though measures similar. X-lite is lighter at 13.8 packed. My elementary-school-aged kid *loves* the Klymit UL V, and has now taken full possession of it for most trips! Could not be happier.Synopsis: Klymit insulated UL V is outstanding pad for the price. I rate it 4 stars for overall performance, but 5 stars for performance/price or value proposition.
First: R number controversy - It's pretty simple: Insulation is dead air space. More dead air = more insulation. An inflatable pad like this one is not as good at trapping air as fiberglass insulation in your attic. Just what R value you get is going to be determined by how fully inflated the pad is and how much airflow their is across and within the pad, so variable. I would believe as low as 1 or as high as 3 depending on just how you use it. Putting down a space blanket (or other piece of reflective mylar) under it should help a lot given the design.I got this for an upgrade from the REI self-inflater thermarest knockoff I took to Philmont last time. It was a little slow to fluff up above 8000 ft, and needed some help inflating. Another advisor on the crew had ... MoreFirst: R number controversy - It's pretty simple: Insulation is dead air space. I figured this would weigh less, pack smaller, and be warmer. Looks like it willIt is a little narrow, but should be OK as I use a one person trekking pole tent anyway - not a lot of ways to roll off.
The good: Comfy, compact, kinda-light but not ultralight. I brought this pad out on a couple of overnighters to test it out and it was great! It was comfortable for a back sleeper but not perfect if you sleep on your side. I toss and turn a good amount and definitely bottomed out when sleeping on my side. The bad: Fast forward to me bringing this on multi-night trips both backpacking and car camping and it got punctured 3 separate times. I was able to patch it in the field and then make a more permanent fix when I got home each time but on the fourth puncture I just gave up. I've owned a lot of pads and believe myself to be really gentle with my lighter/fragile pieces of gear but I just couldn't keep this thing from getting holes in it. Also for reference, I live in the northeastern US so I'm not dealing with a lot of cactus/burr issues like my desert fairing compatriots. Anyway, I've moved on to a SeaToSummit Etherlight XT. 2oz lighter, thicker, comes with a pump sack, but also more expensive IIRC.
I bought this mat as a lightweight option for tramping. Got to use it last week. Light and packs down small. Very comfortable for me when sleeping on my back or side. Easy to inflate and deflate. Only negative is that it makes a whistling sound if you sit up quickly or bounce around on it. Ill keep my bouncing to a minimum 😆Happy with my purchase.
Exactly what I was looking for. This sleeping pad packs up really small (shorter than a 1 litre Nalgene, but same circumference) and the material seems decent. The pad is a little narrow, which is totally fine for me as a 5'5" slim person, but it might be uncomfortable for someone with wider shoulders or hips who sleeps on their back.
