After reading reviews, I still chose to purchase the Kodak Scanza. I figured for the price it was worth to try it. I was not disappointed. I have an older negative scanner with less mp quality and it did not have an adapter for 110 film. So, with that being said, it was a no brainer to try it. At first look, I was disappointed because the one I received definitely was used and I paid for a 'new' scanner. When I first put through the first set of negatives, it was a black screen. I used the felt brush on the screen as suggested in the instruction booklet and wala, my pictures were found! It is important to remember to change the setting when changing negative sizes or slides. And they weren't always in good focus (I finally just quit doing the scanning) So, I wasn't expecting a miracle from Kodak's Scanza even though it had some good reviews. I was surprised (after my initial set up) with the ease of scanning each slide. It does scan quickly and, if you start with a good quality slide, the end product is quite good. These scans will be going to my kids for their family histories so I didn't need an overly fantastic end-product for projection or making large prints. These scans will be going to my kids for their family histories so I didn't need an overly fantastic end-product for projection or making large prints. I decided to use the lowest resolution setting (14 megapixel) because, even at that setting, it still gave me a file size for each picture of around 1.5MB. I found that for normally exposed slides, setting the brightness to +1 and the blue to -1 gave me my best results. So, after that initial setup and for all subsequent normally exposed slides, I just pumped them through. In a little over a week of scanning in my spare time, I've now scanned 900 slides. Only a dent but progress! There is no noise coming from this little guy ... it's basically just a 1 pound light box with some electronics for minimal exposure control. I've got no idea how long the light will last or if it's replaceable, but I'm going to continue scanning till one of us breaks down. :-)

There are other reviews (not to good) on using the film types (Film gets scratched in the carriers I hear). Good luck.Follow the setup first. If you have a HDMI TV use that over the viewer or use your big screen TV if the HDMI cable is long enough. I used a 32GB SD memory card, worked fine. I used the #1 adapter (use the #3 if your slide film carrier is the thicker or plastic type). You get to select between 14 and 22 MB scans. They are both 14 MB but the 22 is an upscalled/interpolation image like TV’s use. My 18 Images = 75 MB.Using the 22 MB option I get a .JPG picture that averages 4.3 MB at 5728 x 3824 at 72 dpi, sharpness –A bit Soft ???, bit depth is 24, All settings on -Auto-, remember your mileage may vary based on the image. Follow the instruction on having the shiny side of the film Up, and the Image in the "Viewed" position. Number sequence starts at 000001, Remove the drive images to go back to #1. And orient the direction of the film so you need not have to edit it on the machine. Insert with the image showing correctly up and L/R correct the first time. Watch for flipped images from the developer, like backwards Text and Steering wheels on the wrong side, Etc. I used the ‘AUTO’ feature in Settings and let it decide. You may also choose to group like contrasts of the slides to reduce changing that each time. If the colors are still off that can also be modified, once again place those in groups.Get a can of “Dust Off” to blow off the dirt and stuff in the unit and on the slides. I had over a thousand slides to scan, most people do and use this product to do that. For higher resolution and more adjustments use a Flat Bed Scanner, they are much more taylorable. And make sure you get one that does negatives if your going to do them also. I only scanned Positives.Turn the power on last and off first to protect the scanner. I had to turn the scanner on then the HDMI set to get it to sync most of the time. I had two old scans come back from the dead, so don’t hurry the transfers but I was using 3 software packages to create my Data.

Kodak Scanza
4 February 2023

My Kodak Scanza worked for me twice then it would not come on anymore and no power. I was expecting it to be better since Kodak has been around for many years. The machine is very light weight. The cord is very, very short. I did get a replacement and I appreciate that. The lady was very nice on the phone after my second call and helped me with the problem. She went above and beyond, and I appreciate that. The guy that I first spoke to did not want to do his job. This second one seems to work ok so far.

Pros: Kodak Scanza produces good quality scans from transparencies, and from colour and b&w negatives.Originals need to be grouped together - all slides together, all 35mm negs together. Emulsion side down, glossy side up. Ensure absolute dust-free originals. If the empty scanner screen shows a flake of dust, blow it away and use the slim brush provided. Set resolution to 22 megapixels. The image can set lighter or darker, and each of the three colour channels can be reset if necessary.Three types of film holders, plus inserts, enable all domestic film sizes to be scanned. Negatives can be set to be viewed as positives. Most efficient is the No 1 holder, which allows slideafter slide to be slid into position, scanned, and replaced at once by the next slide. To operate, the scanner takes power from the USB power cord. Scanned images are stored on an SD memory card (not provided). After scanning, remove the SD memory card and insert it into your PC or laptop.Alternatively, you can connect the scanner to your PC to transfer the stored images (but this will halt scanning - you cannot scan directly to a PC or laptop). All images are stored as large JPEG lossy files. For best quality, I opened each JPEG and resaved it as a BMP, using Paint to trim each image's perimeter, and then did an Image Stretch 25% to produce a sharp, smaller final image. There seems to be an effective rangefinder function in the machine, as it is finding and scanning the surface of the film emulsion. This avoids out-of-focus scans caused by ignoring the depth of the slide mount. Solidly built, and a good purchase.Cons: The thin ink-saving thin font in the instruction book is hard to read, and the ancient micro-USB socket is used instead of the 2014 USB-C type.

Item does what I purchased it for. Have yet to get it recognized by computer via HDMI cable interface. The Gallery feature stores scanned images to memory card, however it will not read other jpeg images from a card written onto it from another device. Still working with it to see if drivers are needed to enable interfacing with a laptop or desktop computer.

Really torn about rating this device
5 December 2020

I've had a lot of trouble getting this scanner to work. If I can resolve the issue, I will raise the rating to 5 stars, because when it is working, it's great. Once you set up your image with the right adapter, it works quickly and the scans are high quality. You do have to use an SD card for the Scanza to operate. The problem is that my device keeps freezing with the display showing vertical green lines down the image. The only way to move forward at this point is to disconnect the power and then reboot the device. Unfortunately, this happens sometimes after every few images. I have contacted the company to see if the power cord may be defective or if I'm doing something wrong. BTW this is a product of C&A Marketing using the Kodak name under license.

Very low quality
13 December 2020

After seeing hundreds of 4- and 5-star reviews for this product, I was in disbelief after trying it out and thought I might have received a defective item. The visual clarity is terrible and looks very low-res. Objects in the image can even appear out-of-focus because the loading tray does not apply pressure evenly to the film. The other big concern is the color balance. It appeared fine with the first frame I captured, but right after hitting the capture button, the color suddenly shifted very green. Each time I hit the capture button, the color balance kept varying more and more, to the point where the color adjustment settings could not make the scans look remotely accurate. This comes with a "cleaning brush," which actually leaves more dust particles behind.Kodak's product quality has been suffering for decades, especially with digital, and this product is no different. Wilf's review of KODAK Scanza Digital Film Scanner
10 August 2020

Pros: Straightforward to use for scanning slides once the basics have been mastered. Copes with card and plastic mounts. Quality of results very satisfactory for an amateur - some keen amateurs and professionals may demand more. Unit is very compact but screen is a good size. Overall reasonably priced and good value and doesn't require more than basic skills to operate.Cons: Slide carrier is fairly flimsy - needs opened with care. SD card is essential but not included. Portrait slides need to be inserted as if landscape otherwise only a band across the middle is scanned. Essential to rotate these before uploading to computer. Most of scanned photos need slightly cropped to remove dark edges. Facility to adjust colour isn't particularly effective.

Works great once you figure it out
2 June 2020

I was able to scan and upload slides that I thought would never be seen again! I'm not tech-savvy, so when the instructions said just plug in, I was overwhelmed because I didn't know which of the several cords went into which spot for connecting. Lots of trial and error and lots of looking up YouTube videos needed to figure out the basic setup. The printed version is in several languages, handy for many, but instructions are far from specific enough for me. The slide adapter trays are difficult to open and close. I was afraid I'd break it before I ever saw a slide. There was the merest hint that you don't need to remove, open, replace, and close the adapter for each slide--but no specific directions as to how you _are_ supposed to do it. I would need step-by-step ... MoreI was able to scan and upload slides that I thought would never be seen again! I would need step-by-step instructions, ideally. Once I figured it out, yes, it's easy. Getting to that point took all the patience I could muster.
