Kristin Hannah - The Nightingale
Two sisters. One must be brave. One should be afraid. The New York Times number one bestselling title. Vivid and exquisite in its illumination of a time and place that was filled with atrocities, but also humanity and strength, Kristin Hannah's The Nightingale will provoke thought and discussion that will have readers talking long after they finish reading. Bravery, courage, fear and love in a time of war. Despite their differences, sisters Viann and Isabelle have always been close. Younger, bolder Isabelle lives in Paris while Viann is content with life in the French countryside with her husband Antoine and their daughter. But when the Second World War strikes, Antoine is sent off to fight and Viann finds herself isolated so Isabelle is sent by their father to help her. As the war progresses, the sisters' relationship and strength is tested. With life changing in unbelievably horrific ways, Viann and Isabelle will find themselves facing frightening situations and responding in ways they never thought possible as bravery and resistance take different forms in each of their actions.

The Nightingale has been a New York bestseller for a good reason. This is a amazing story from Kristin Hannah from a women's perspective. A story that really draws you in to the two main characters, sisters who are vastly different in personality and lifestyles in war torn France. Each in their own way trying to survive under German oppression yet each playing a significant part in the resistance from incredibly brave to overwhelming personal cost. I highly recommend this book which I read and couldn't put down. A unforgettable book.
Such a great book, really grips you from the first few chapters and was so addictive! Gives you a new perspective on things and I learned about history along the way too!
The book was as good as new and arrived in very good time for our book club. The book itself was an interesting read, despite an overly flowery style of the author. I wouldn't read any further books by this author as I think this subject is better covered in All the Light I cannot see by Anthony Doerr. That said, it still made me cry at the end.
This book was phenomenal. An absolute must read for anyone who is interested in women's perspectives on war. I could not put this book down. I laughed, I cried...it was breathtaking. Cannot recommend this enough!
Lovely book. Already read before but warrants re-reading its so good.
The Nightingale by Kristen Hannah is a powerful and moving story about two sisters during WW2 in occupied France. I haven't read a lot of novels set on the front line in France, and I love stories about the role women played in war so this one drew me in quickly. Whilst this is a novel, it has ignited in me a desire to read about the remarkable women that resisted and saved both airmen and children during the war. There were a few issues for me with the writing, mainly that there were some inconsistencies in timeline (ages of people as the years role by) but overall it was a poignant story of love, loss and determination to do what is right, even when there is so much to lose. This will appeal to readers of historical fiction as well as those that love stories of ... It is time now for me to search out real women's stories and ensure that I am not overlooking their role during the war. Ones to pass on to my daughter. This was a ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (4/5) for me.
