Kwikset 660 Single Cylinder Deadbolt Featuring SmartKey in Polished Brass

Works and installs fine into my regular door opening. Plastic package feels cheap. Should have been in a small cardboard box instead. Also, seems there is some oil around the locks, as if someone was trying to polish and clean it up but forgot to wipe the oil completely.

Did NOT meet my expectations. It was purchased to replace five-year-old deadbolt of the same brand, model and style. There was an obvious and significant decrease in quality and craftsmanship from previous deadbolt. Therefore, I only used the cylinder as a replacement part.

Chrome difficult to find but Build.com had them!

Searched for 30 year old replacements in chrome but only Build.com had them. Other sources had Chinese copies but wanted Kwikset. Bought enough to replace all locks throughout house, all came key matched although from different warehouse locations. Great service, great job!

Easy to Install

I had a smartlock that needed to be replaced prior to selling my house. I was able to install this lock very easily in less than 10 minutes. The easy rekey feature is amazing! I was so worried that it would be difficult or not work, but it was simple and effective - in less than 30 seconds. Overall, I was pleasantly surprised with how easy everything was from start to finish - would definitely recommend!

I like the smart key function, which brings not only...

I like the smart key function, which brings not only a much more secure lock but also the ability to change the key to match any other key (as many times as you'd like). So if the key is compromised, easy to change the lock to match a different key. I like the appearance of the venetian bronze. I would have preferred a little wider lever, but that is small stuff! Price was also affordable.

Kwikset 660 is Good for Lower Security Applications

The Kwikset 660 deadbolt is their lower grade door-lock. The 990 is the heavy-duty version which has bigger internal screws and can take more force and punishment. I purchased the lower grade lock as a stop-gap measure for my front door until I find a higher quality deadbolt to secure my house. This lock would be good enough for lower security areas, but for my front door I want the strongest lock possible.

Looks good but couldn't use strike plate

This was an easy install and looks great. The only thing I don't like is the strike plate but that is probably unique to my house. The strike plate is a heavy duty plate with 4 screws which would be ok in most cases. Our house was built with a piece of heavy galvanized metal in the locking area of the door jamb predrilled for a 2 hole strike plate. This provides extra security for the deadbolt. In order to use the Kwikset strike plate I had to drill 4 new holes through the galvanized sometimes along the extreme edge (caused drill to slip, etc). In 2 out of three cases I just used the original 2 hole strike plate which lined up with the galvanized holes. My 10 year old Kwikset lock decided it didn't want to accept my key anymore one day. I looked on Home Essentials Direct here and found this one. I didn't want to replace the whole thing since my old one is fancier and has the handle, too, so I used the barrel of this one and put it into the old outer piece. I changed out the part that goes on the door, too. It took 6 screws and literally 10 minutes for this non-handy first timer. Apparently a locksmith would have charged $150 to do the same thing. If you have a screwdriver, you can do this! There are also videos on Youtube that show you how step by step. I'm grateful to have saved $135 and to know how to change a lock if I ever need to again!

Prepare for some extra work

I installed five of these bright brass deadbolts. The brass exterior is good. The smart key feature works well. There was one problem. The lock assembly is held together by screwing two fine thread bolts into tapped holes in the assembly. For all five deadbolts the righthand screw hole had somewhat distorted threads. I corrected three of the items by carefully screwing in a proper, hardened bolt before attempting installation. I could not correct the remaining item because there was a burr in the threads. I was forced to use a tap to reestablish the threads. All this was more work than I had expected.

Review of the 740TNL-S & 780-S Kwikset hardware

I purchased these handles and locks to replace some existing handles on our residence to asthetically match new hardware we had installed from a remodel project. I really like the Kwikset SmartKey techonlogy to be able to key our locks to the same key throughout our house. Makes life soooo... much easier. I highly recommend the Kwikset Smartkey capability. Re-keying our locks was a very easy process.The quality and service I have recieved from Build.com has been great. I have used them numerous times and will continue to do so. The online chat for helping with decisions and making sure the correct items are ordered has been extemely easy.
