The Trail Rocker System supports and encourages a natural running style. Thanks to the three-layer construction, the shoes are breathable and offer a stable hold. The midsole made of injected EVA foam reliably cushions and relieves the feet during long trail running tours. The blast is 9mm. The tight-fitting shaft of the La Sportiva Akyra makes these trail running shoes particularly stable and ensures safety when running in difficult terrain.

I love these shoes, second pair, fitted with Enertor insoles. Best trail shoes I have yet had the pleasure of wearing, (I’ve trawled through many). Stable, cushioned, flexi & breathable uppers, super comfy midsoles, grippy as f**k, toe guard, lightweight rock plate, integrated tongue, simple lacing, they suit my current style of running, (Cornish coastal paths, creekside footpaths, woodland, granite moorland, trails, footpaths, some tarmac). Love the fact that the soles don’t abrade to death immediately on contact with tarmac like most trail running shoes. (Why are there not more hybrid shoes out there? Most of my trail runs involve at least some road, in the winters more so). Sizing is a bit off, get a size bigger at least, maybe even 1.5 sizes. I’m normally a 43 in most footwear but for these a 44.5 is perfect. The heel tabs have a habit of pulling off too, but maybe that’s my fault? All in all a great shoe. Love the colourways too, first pair was orange/black, now have the green/blue version. Yellow/black is also gorgeous. If you can dial in to the right size for you, I think you’ll love them!

Takes little research to learn that La Sportivas are not for everyone. But if they are for you, you’re lucky to be able to use the best shoes on the market for technical trails. Took a hard turn away from minimalist shoes about a year and a half ago and these were the first I came to. I can’t believe I used to hike in anything else. So far I’ve put 400+ miles on these and am pretty sure I have a couple hundred more. Treads only slightly worn and a couple smalls holes where the toes crease. Have worn them from North Carolina to Alaska. Extremely grippy on all kinds of terrain and rock, stable, and comfortable. They breathe well and dry pretty quickly. I own 8 pairs of Jackals. After owning 18 pairs of Akashas, this is now my go-to shoe for high volume days in the mountains. The level of cushioning is balanced to still provide sensitivity and feedback useful for precise, technical footwork moving fast in class 1-3 terrain. The Jackal is NOT a clunky, insensitive shoe. Unlike other shoes I've tried, the rock guards are NOT too stiff to impede natural foot motion through the gate cycle.I spend 25-30 hours / week training on my feet in the mountains, which has widened my forefoot and forces me to seek a wide toe box. Furthermore, there is reinforcing material at the forefoot flex point, which has significantly reduced the problem I had with every pair of Akashas blowing out the upper by the pinky toe. The near-seamless upper also is true to Sportiva's word in that I haven't had any hot spots. The closest thing I can draw to a complaint is that although the shoe fit isn't sloppy, it doesn't fit my feet as perfectly glove-like as the Kaptiva does. I own 10 pairs of Kaptivas for normal volume days (<20mi & 10k vert). My ideal shoe is a Kaptiva upper on a Jackal base.My 2020 volume was ~3200 miles and 1.4 million vert (w/ 2 months off). 100% of my volume is mixed running and hiking in the mountains. The only flat I run is on high plains between peaks or dirt roads along the base of mountains when doing loops. I typically get 400-500 miles out of Sportiva shoes. 99% of my volume is in Sportiva runners.

This is 2 reviews. 1 on the shoe and the 2nd on REI. This is a great shoe, unfortunately it runs small, like a size small. It's light, no need for a break in period.I got what I thought was the correct size, it wasn't. I wear an 11.5 I ordered size 12 (45.5) in the silly EU system and found out real quick that it was to small. I was at my local REI this morning and saw a pair of Jackal shoes that were on markdown, size 12.5 (46). REI did a straight across trade. They made good on my mistake, no questions asked. If you're gonna buy La Sportiva, get a size bigger than normal
These shoes first caught my attention when I read a glowing review about them in a running magazine which described them as a cushioned, grippy workhorse perfectly suited for long distance technical trails. However, when I tried them on in the store I did not get a good first impression and was surprised at how narrow, rigid, heavy, and unstable they felt. As many other reviewers have noted the sizing is way off, even by La Sportiva's standards. I usually wear a U.S. men's size 12, but fluctuate between a European size 44.5 and 47.5 in La Sportiva shoes (depending on the model), and had to go with a 47 in the Jackal. Even after sizing up, the toe box felt a little cramped and tight on my toes. Even after sizing up, the toe box felt a little cramped and tight on my toes. However, I didn't want to size up any further because they were already plenty long and going up would have only introduced more slop. Against my better judgement, I decided to get them because I was sure that they would break in after a few runs, and I was getting very tired of Hoka One One's lack of durability and Altra's inconsistent quality control and sizing. The FriXion XT 2.0 soles do provide excellent traction on dry surfaces, but are much slipperier on wet surfaces than Vibram Megagrip soles and also tend to accumulate chunks of mud when running in wet terrain. The heel and soles themselves are very narrow, yet the midsole stack height is quite tall, so I kept rolling my ankles, which was very annoying. The EVA rock guards did a good job of protecting my feet from sharp rocks. However, despite being quite thick, the midsoles are very rigid, and my feet felt fatigued around the 5-mile mark. I kept running thinking this would improve over distance as I broke the shoes in, but it never did get better. The midsoles have a peculiar 'dead' feel to them, which is hard to describe, but basically comes down to me not feeling any energy return with each step, and instead of feeling a cushioned or supportive ride, the midsoles felt flat and hard.I have now run over 100 miles in them and they have never really broken in. At this point I have given up on them and they are now retired to only being worn for yard work. There seems to be many other reviewers who have had a much better experience with these shoes, so it is possible that I just got a bad pair. However, the overall lack of stability and support is too much for me to want to try out another pair, so now I am going back to my Speedgoats. Bottom line: I would highly recommend trying them on prior to purchasing them.
I have owned several pairs of Ultra Raptors, Wildcats, and the Akyra GTX, all 42.5, and they have been great shoes. I wear an 8.5 in most US shoes and Lowa boots, so I am already sizing up a full size for La Sportiva typically. These Jackals run shorter and wider. Had to return my pair since my toes were jamming into the front on the downhills. But the width of the toe box is nice and wide. I may try a 43, but my achilles was getting cut up from the heel counter too, so may try something else. They are nice and light, with moderate support as described. The upper is very airy, and stretchy, which may be part if the reason my toes were jamming--not enough support to restrain the foot on the downhill. I think this shoe will be great for some people, but they will want ... MoreI have owned several pairs of Ultra Raptors, Wildcats, and the Akyra GTX, all 42.5, and they have been great shoes. These shoes are so close to 5 stars. I've been hiking in La Sportiva Akyra trail runners for a few years now. I love them. But they were just discontinued and I wanted a waterproof shoe. The Jackal is a really good shoe. The balance between trail feel and isolation is nearly perfect. You can feel the trail in rocky NH but my foot never feels pounded and more importantly, I never feel the sharp rock edges that are so prevalent in the white mountains. I was surprised by the construction. The sides are mesh with an inner waterproof lining. Large amount of water will top the lining. These shoes are better for wet grass, smaller pudles, or mud. I have successfully rocked hopped a few rivers with the shoe partially submerged. Don't expect them to be the same as a heavier shoe.So why 4 stars? Fit! I purchased 3 pairs to get one that fit and even then, it is not perfect. The first pair were the same size as my Akyra which are already a half size over my standard shoe. I could not even get them on. The second was a size up. Too tight. So I went up two sizes from my standard shoe before I found shoes that fit! Note, I have a high arch and foot. The shoe is very tight across the top of my foot. There is a huge amount of room for the toes and these shoes are not too narrow. But now the larger shoe is lose around the heel. These are great shoes if you can find a pair that fit!
The Good:Amazing midsole combination of compressed EVA and embedded 'Infinitoo' polyurethane foam dampen shock while giving just the right amount of rebound and cushion and allow surprisingly good ground feel for a 29 mm / 22 mm stack height (4 mm Ortholite insole included) and 7 mm offset. The dual compound, dual patterned outsole lugs and 1.5 mm rock guard worked extremely well on ascents and descents. The outsole even felt fine on the pavement. The Bad:The upper is flawed in at least two ways which is both frustrating and surprising because it was adapted from the Kaptiva upper which did not have these issues and because La Sportiva should have caught and corrected these problems before mass production.Flaw 1: The overly stiff, inadequately padded ankle / ... MoreThe Good:Amazing midsole combination of compressed EVA and embedded 'Infinitoo' polyurethane foam dampen shock while giving just the right amount of rebound and cushion and allow surprisingly good ground feel for a 29 mm / 22 mm stack height (4 mm Ortholite insole included) and 7 mm offset. The dual compound, dual patterned outsole lugs and 1.5 mm rock guard worked extremely well on ascents and descents. The outsole even felt fine on the pavement. The Bad:The upper is flawed in at least two ways which is both frustrating and surprising because it was adapted from the Kaptiva upper which did not have these issues and because La Sportiva should have caught and corrected these problems before mass production.Flaw 1: The overly stiff, inadequately padded ankle / heel collar is too high so it rubs on both the lateral side and the heel. This is so bad that both of my Achilles contact points developed blisters less than 5 miles into my first run as did the lower lateral side of my left ankle. I've never experienced this in any other trail or road shoe. It is possible the collar material may soften over time but I'm not looking forward to suffering while waiting for that to happen.Flaw 2: The tongue is integrated into a bootie construction but it is too loosely structured with no mid-tongue through holes in the tongue for the laces to hold it in place. This would be fine but it does not work as it did in the Kaptiva because the tongue is too short and the material is too loose at the base of the tongue so the laces eventually ride up and over the top of the tongue - especially if you lace them all the way up through the top lace lock eyelets. The Kaptiva did not have lace lock eyelets but it did have a much higher tongue that was just as soft and caused no issues. Some people complained about heel slippage in the Kaptiva so I suspect that drove some of the design thinking in the Jackal's variation of the upper and addition of heel lock eyelets - too bad those changes were poorly implemented. Conclusion:I've purchased many pairs of both the La Sportiva Akasha and Kaptiva and completed several ultra marathons in them. This shoe could have been a perfect successor to the Akasha had these issues been identified and corrected. As much as I wish it were otherwise, I can't recommend these shoes at this time unless your ankles are freakishly shaped or you are a masochist.
I bought this shoe in need for a hiking shoe alternative to the heavier boots used for longer mileage backpacking trips in rough terrain. These are good solid shoes that did well on steep rocky trails. Good grip when scrambling over boulders. They held when a bad slip would have easily resulted in an injury. I was grateful for the clear reviews provided by others on the REI website. Theses shoes run small. I typically wear 10 1/2 or 11 shoe or boot. I ordered 11.5 and the fit was right on. These are now my go to shoes for warm dry weather for hiking over hard challenging terrain.
I was looking for a replacement for my hoka's speedggotat 4. Comfy but too bulky (specially coming down in some trails around here) and fragile. The woman helping me suggested these or the wildcats. The only ones in stock were the jackals.I wear 12 (male US) across Salomon, garmont, etc. I tried the samecsize. The tongue is pretty narrow and in addition has some arches cut on the sides. It does not have a protective mesh like the wildcats. I could see the socks after lacing up, the first outing in the mountains will be a soaked one. Bottom line, why spending the gore-tex if the shoe has holes by design? I ordered the wildcats (12) on-line. Perfect fit
