La Sportiva Solution Comp - Black/Yellow 44
Solution Comp is the climbing shoe designed for maximum performance on climbing competitions. Originating from the famous Solution climbing shoe, it boasts greater coverage at the front thanks to the rubber toe cap designed for toe hooks on overhangs and it has a more tapered heel to favor heel hooks on micro-holds. Perfect distribution of tension is guaranteed thanks to the P3 System technology which allows to maintain the shape over time. Solution Comp is a soft, precise, very elastic and reactive shoe: developed thinking of the movements of climbers on the volumes that today characterize indoor structures. The lacing is precise and quick thanks to the Fast-Lacing system. It has a lock –harness construction for a perfect binding of the foot. The XS-Grip2 sole provides for maximum grip for a precise and safe climb. Solution Comp: the solution is in the name.

This shoes basically marry the old Solution front with the Skwama heel (actually it is a bit thinner and shallower heel than the Skwama, but it comes up the ankle a little more) and styling. I really don't see a reason to get the old Solutions unless your heels are soft like 6-minutes eggs or they are bulbous enough that they already fit very well into the old Solution heels. The Solution Comp may also be a bit softer in the midsole than the old Solution.Even they are supposed to be built on the same last, the Solution Comp fronts are noticeably narrower than the Skwama's. Plus its uppers are partially lined and the toe patches are huge, I don't expect the uppers on these shoes stretch much (unlike the Skwama's, which will fit 1/2 size fuller by the first resole). ... MoreThis shoes basically marry the old Solution front with the Skwama heel (actually it is a bit thinner and shallower heel than the Skwama, but it comes up the ankle a little more) and styling. There is also a bit of a "talon" at the big toe, which is not present on the Skwama and the overall toe box shape is quite a bit pointier. I feel like I have to go 1/2 Euro size down from the Skwama to fill the big toe area the same way, but then the whole shoe will be way too tight. When new, the Solution Comp feels tighter than the Skwama. For reference, I tried on Euro 38.5 ones in both shoes back to back. I think this is also why I see a lot of people would size their Solution 1/2 down from other higher volume La Sportiva shoes like the Katana Lace, the Miura VS, and the (new/2019) Testarossa. If this is your first La Sportiva, I would start with ordering the same size and the 1/2 size down from other La Sportiva shoes. Which one you prefer will come down to personal preference and whether you want redpoint sending or everyday performance shoes in these.I can't really comment on the performance of these shoes on the wall as I only needed to weight them a bit on a ledge to know that they don't fit my wide feet with high instep very well. However, from my experience with the Skwama and feeling the big toe on the Solution Comp, I expect they will excel at overhung problem where you have to use your toes to either hook and jam a lot. The soft midsoles would allow a sensitive feel when pulling with and pivoting with the toes, even on face climbs. The toe on the Solution Comp is a bit more precise than the Skwama. I bet I would love these shoes if they fit wide feet well.

I wear a 42.5 in the new Solutions (43 in the old Solutions). I downsized to 42 for Solution Comp and it was too small- and it made my heel pop up and almost out of the shoe...I think a 42.5 would have worked fine. I also feel like the straps are going to be a problem and will break just like the other solutions, old & new. I ended up going with another pair of Scarpa Instinct instead. Other than the sizing and the straps- these felt like great shoes and may try them in the proper size in the future.

I've been using Solutions for years and absolutely love it for everything except multi-pitch. My only sticking point (pun only partly intended) was that the perfectly fitting heel was like an ice pick, which is great a lot of the time, but it makes it hard to use your heel on smaller or smooth features. The Solution Comps have a softer, stickier heel that I wish the Solutions had, and the top of the toe is also softer and more comfortable to toe hook than the Solutions. The toe itself is equivalent between the two as far as I can tell.A couple of little things to mention:Sizing - I went with a half size smaller than my Solutions (which are tight, but not painful). So if you're going from Solutions, I'd recommend sizing down a half size unless your Solutions so tight you can't wear them for a whole session.Heel fit - My heel fit the original Solutions perfectly. Even sized down, the comp heel doesn't fit quite the same or as well. Occasionally an air pocket creeps into it, which never happened with the originals. Maybe that's the tradeoff for the softer heel? In any case, it bothered me on the ground, but I never really noticed it on the wall. Even with the tiny bit of space in the heel, it was tight and soft enough that my heel didn't slip inside the shoe when heel hooking.Ultimately I think this is still worth trying out if you love Solutions but want a softer heel. Also if you have neither and want to try a new aggressive shoe, this is a hard shoe to beat.

There are plenty of high-performing climbing shoes on the market - the real performance comes from a proper fit.I’ve always had a hard time finding climbing shoes with a good fit for my feet, which are normal width in the forefoot, but are very narrow in the heel. Not many shoes fit this kind of foot and the result is usually a loose and baggy heel. The only shoes I’ve tried so far that fit my heel are the new Katanas (more of a sport climbing shoe) and the Solution Comps. The original Solutions had a molded heel cup that was cavernous and a fairly stiff forefoot; this was a no-go for me. The Solution Comps have the same high asymmetry and other features of the standard Solutions, but are more sensitive and have a tighter heel.Fit (EU 40.5): Excellent ... MoreThere are plenty of high-performing climbing shoes on the market - the real performance comes from a proper fit.I’ve always had a hard time finding climbing shoes with a good fit for my feet, which are normal width in the forefoot, but are very narrow in the heel. I have and really like the 2nd version of the Solution; but this model is substantially more comfortable, at seemingly no decline in performance. I am an average Gym/Outside climber, so take my opinion with a grain of salt; but after receiving these and trying them out immediately versus my current pair, I greatly prefer these. The new heel, which resembles the Miura's, Skwama's and Katana's is just nicer all around than the old, bulbous, rigid heel. Front end seems identical, and I can climb the same routes with the same precision and performance. So, If you liked Solution I and Solution II, I think you would really love this 3rd iteration! To William R. below:My street shoes size is 11.5-12 and no = I have not experienced any stretch. My forefoot is kinda wide, and my 3rd toe on both sides protrudes more than it should; so I DID use a shoe stretcher to slightly widen the forefoot because of my peculiarity, but nothing major. FWIW: My Solution IIs are size 46 and my Solution Comps are 45.5. I do not like super tight shoes. The 45.5 size is probably what YOU would prefer for performance, maybe even 45. The Comp's seem a tiny, TINY bit larger than the Solution IIs, maybe because of the softer, more forgiving heel.
These are an ultra high quality shoe, but as with all climbing shoes, fit is super personal. I have high arches, low-ish volume, and Egyptian foot shape, and I heard great things about these as a performance all-rounder for indoor and outdoor bouldering. But the toe box was way too tall (baggy above the big toe) and the heel was very deep, causing both a gap and unnecessary tension on the achilles tendon. Had to return, hope the women’s version restocks in my size so I can try those.Note my size in these was .5 smaller than my normal Scarpa size (could have gone 1 whole size smaller with a longer break-in process).
This is my second set of solution comps. They feel much more comfortable than the regular solutions (in my opinion), without sacrificing performance. These are a softer version of the non-comp version, especially at the arch and heel. The rubber climbs very well indoors and outdoors. My hardest problem outside (V13) was done with this shoe.
After climbing in the regular Solution for years, I was a bit skeptical to try something "different!" Im really impressed with how the Solution Comp came out. Its got all the great traits of the regular Solution, with a few nice additions. The heal is different from the regular Solution, and this worried me at first. One thing the regular Solution excels at is heel hooking. The Solution Comps different heal did not impact the overall heal hooking feel of this new shoe. Hard heal hooks felt secure as ever before. The fit is the first thing that I immediately noticed. To me, the Comp Solutions feel lighter and less "boxy" compared to their regular companions. I downsized by .5 euro size. They were a tad harder to get on, but once I got them on, they felt amazing. ... MoreAfter climbing in the regular Solution for years, I was a bit skeptical to try something "different!" They felt like a sock, immediately sucked to the shape of my foot and erased any small dead space pockets I used to feel in the regular Solutions.I've had a chance to put a pair of these through their paces in Hueco. I never though I'd say this, but I found a shoe that feels like it can outperform the regular Solution! Definitely worth a try if youre a hard core Solution fan....or if youre just looking for a great pair of shoes!
They climb well and all. But the thin straps wore out and broke long before the rubber was worn. Tied stopper knots, and that worked for some time, util what remained of the straps wore out and broke, too.Second, when they get warm they begin to leak black ink. I don't know how else to describe it. It drips through the holes in the rubber, making a mess of everything it comes in contact with. The ink does not come off the feet with soap and hot water and a lot of rubbing. This stain lasts for days.We know at least one more person with the same problem, and some others with no problems at all. It seems like a random quality control issue. Would not buy again.
My favorite shoes are often the ones I find myself most hesitant to wear... I want them to last forever! The new Solution Comp's are in that special category. Is this go worth the rubber?? Because out of the box these shoes have been a sticky edging precision tool that absolutely crushes granite of all angles and has already been surprised me with slick granite redpoints. The original Solution was a breakthrough in its ability to grab holds on steep boulders as effectively as it would surprisingly walk up technical vert climbing. Some downturned shoes are great on 30 degree overhangs but "pick" unexpectedly on vert and slab. The Solution can turn the lip of the cave and still tick-tack up the runout slab headwall. The toe hooking rubber is the stickiest I've felt ... MoreMy favorite shoes are often the ones I find myself most hesitant to wear... I've always liked a more structured heel over an extremely soft heel (I like to feel like I'm "edging" when heel hooking) and the Comp is the perfect balance of feel and support.I sized them a half size down as I do my Skwamas (39 instead of 39.5 for Muiras, TC Pros etc) and they were a pain to put on initially. Now that the neoprene sleeve and heel cup has broken in a little, I'm happy with the downsize. If you're having trouble getting them on, work your toes as deep into the toe box as possible before trying to pull the heel on. That way you can get the big toe all the way forward before trying to fit the shoe on.
