Kinda ugly but that’s nothing a little dust and mud won’t cure.Just be prepared that they run very small and narrow. I ended up with 7.5 wide to replace my beloved but worn out Salomon 6.5 reg boots. Hats off to REI staff for their help with returns/exchanges to find the right fit.But hats back on REI corporate (&hence 4 stars rather than 5) for lowering the price just days after I got them during a member sale. Lesson: being a member does not mean you’ll get the best price.

I do a lot of hiking on very rugged trails in Central Mexico. I also walked 400 km on the Camino Norte in Spain. Love these boots. They are light weight, are flexible in all the right places, i.e. when going up or down a steep incline, your ankles have the freedom to move and you don’t feel locked in. The grip on the sole is very helpful on gravelly and rocky terrain - alas, it does wear after two years of fairly heavy use. My feet stayed dry after hiking for an entire day in heavy wind and rain. Besides all this, they also look very stylish! I am going to buy another exact pair like this today.I am 5’2”, 125 lbs. and wear a size 8 wide.

bought a pair of these boots over a couple years ago. I felt a tad too short after backpacking all day. So, purchased a second, longer pair. I cannot get these boots to make my feet quit hurting! I have VERY narrow feet so this may be just MY issue. I think sizing up may have made the width just too wide for me despite putting in fabulous new insoles. I will be returning. I have hopes for another model from the same manufacturer. I think it’s a shame that there are not enough manufacturers out there who have narrow with choices.Thank you REI for having such a great return policy.

I bought these as a lighter weight alternative to my typical leather hiking boots for an upcoming scout trip to Philmont. These are so much lighter that I was concerned I couldn't hoof 10 miles with 35 lbs in them but I was wrong! Great boots that don't overheat my feet. All shoes seem to cause me blisters and these are no exception but I can proactively manage them as they are predictable. I love the wider toe box and the narrower heal cup. These are working so well for me during training hikes that I bought a second pair in case they wear out before the trip but so far so good! Only concern I have is keeping an eye on the lacing loops and the laces themselves. Both are pretty thin and I like to crank on my laces for a better fit. One shoe in one pair had little padding under the insole and the other pair rubbed funny on my pinky toe. The teal and maroon colors are both better in person. I typically wear size 9 1/2 or a size 10 when wearing thick socks & hiking with a heavier pack. I ordered a size 10 in these and they fit as I hoped. Would give 4.5 stars if I could.Recommend!

I have on-and-off joint pain that I've found I can ease with plantar fascitis insoles, but when buying an expensive boot I was hoping the insoles that came with would be supportive enough. These were! I never got to take them on an extreme hike, but I worked a few months doing some daily trekking in a desert/scrub and then hilly environment, and my feet and ankles never gave me an extra complaint. The toebox, however, was way too small. I tried on several sizes in store before picking the most comfortable and hoped I would adjust, but every day I remember feeling like I was squeezed into the shoe to start and only comfortable after a few hours in them. Also, they were a good fit on my narrow feet.
No hiking boot I ever wore claiming waterproofness was ever truly waterproof. Every hiking boot I’ve worn had a decent amount of water resistance, waterproof until a certain amount of miles. These boots are the least waterproof of my previous shoes. They’re good for small puddles of water crossing, about 1 inch high. Any higher and the shoe will immediately feel cool and damp. Otherwise these are an excellent pair of shoes. Lightweight, mobile, sticky grip, and breathable. I feel great running on my hikes with these.
I have put these boots through the wringer backpacking in Washington, Wyoming and Utah. They have great traction, (especially for those peak ascents), they are super light weight and required little to no break-in time and were all around very comfortable. However, they are NOT AT ALL waterproof. I took them on a three week backpacking trip which turned out to be very stormy. Two weeks of having wet feet is not something you want. Every time we crossed a stream more than an inch or two deep, the water came right in. Washington is notoriously wet, but it rains in Wyoming too, a lot sometimes, so unless you are sure you will be hiking in dry conditions (Arizona, perhaps) I would not really recommend this boot.

Two years later, they are pretty toasted - the fabric covering on the side is all ripped up and exposing the inside of the boot, the traction on the boot is worn flat, and the sole is coming off.This boot is super light and breathable, and perhaps for that you pay in a lack of longevity. I'm so grateful that I didn't have to lug a heavy boots through my expeditions!! I used this boot through backpacking trips, disaster relief work, and day program work and they served me well.The cons are that they were never really waterproof. The traction wears fast and i felt unsteady on my backpacking trips where I had to go up rock slopes. The synthetic upper is prone to ripping and tearing.These shoes are amazing for day hiking and I think anyone who doesn't have rougher aspirations for them than some overnight backpacking will be really happy with them. Just don't count on them to last for years and years as you put miles on them.
Just bought my second pair because they’re on sale. These fit amazingly, I buy half a size up and they accommodate custom orthotics easily. I’m pretty hard on my boots, putting on at least 600 miles a year, in rugged, rocky, and wet conditions in upstate NY mostly. The tread is super sticky on wet rocks! The waterproofing wears off almost IMMEDIATELY, FYI. So don’t buy them expecting that to last. After 1.5 years, the toe and some of the tongue are showing signs of wear, and the tread is getting slightly worn down so they’re being retired from upstate NY hiking and will be used in summer time Colorado hiking (easy rocky/sandy trails, no mud, no wetness).
