B&H and La Cie Tech Support Very Very Good

Im pretty happy with this after using it for a year as my main working storage for video editing. Before purchasing this i tested the G-Tech version of this which is priced almost the same. The Lacie performed slightly better, runs quieter and has the CF, SD card slots and USB on the front so it makes dumping memory cards really clean and easy. The footprint of the Lacie is also smaller than the G-Tech which is nice.My only complaint about this drive, which is common among these desktop RAID systems is that it goes into power saving mode far too frequently which results in constant spin up/spin down waits. This would be fine if it happened infrequently such as leaving the machine for an hour and it goes into standby but unfortunately it does this constantly even while actively using the computer. It seems that if the HD is not accessed within a certain period of time or when it receives a command, it will power down the drives (to put less wear on them). It seems to happen constantly for me, even when I’m actively working on a project that uses the drive. There should be a way to manually control this but I have not found one yet other than turning off the power saving features completely in MacOs.

If you are a pro and you need pro level equipment don't buy this drive for two reasons. First, it contains two Seagate Ironwolf (3 year warranty) drives, not the Ironwolf Pro (5 year warranty) drives you would expect in professional equipment. Second, if you buy two units and stack them you have voided your warranty. This is clearly stated but carefully hidden in the owner's manual which you must find on-line. It is unbelievable that Seagate would design a RAID drive enclosure that could not be stacked at least two units high. I do like that the drive turns on and off automatically with the computer. I also like the built-in dockiing ports for a SD card, USB 3.0 device and USB 3.1 device. Excellent external hard drive for my needs
13 June 2021

I have more than 120,000 pictures, mostly raw files, many or which I have worked in Photoshop. I keep these pictures on one external drive (12 TB), and these are backed up to another 12 TB drive. I needed to replace drive #2, and wanted more space. I use a Mac system. Set this 16 TB drive up in a few minutes, copied all the pictures from the drive #1 to this drive #2 - no glitches. Working perfectly since installed. Of note is that the 16 TB drive connects with Thunderbolt 3, but my iMac and hard drive #1 only have Thunderbolt 2 connection. So I bought the Apple connector (3 to 2) and again, all works perfectly. I would buy this again, and will in the next few months as I need the 16 GB.

It's fast, but it never seems to turn off
25 February 2022

I'm using this as a Time Machine Backup for a 8TB hard drive in my Mac. I was using an older hard drive that couldn't even do a partial backup of my computer in almost 2 months. So, it was finally time to upgrade. This one did a full initial backup in like 6 hours, so it's definitely fast. I agree with the other reviewers that it is kind of loud, although my old hard drive was a LOT louder. The only downside is, it never seems to turn off. The blue light isn't on, but the fan still seems to run. So, I've just found myself unplugging it instead. Kind of a pain, but at least it actually backs up my computer!

I bought this for master archival storage of audio recordings on windows (7 !?!?! OMG)A week later it is installed and stable, running on a USB-2 port and life is good. I think it would have much preferred to be storing smartypantz vidiocy for some Mac user via Thunderbird...There were stability issues establishing exactly which USB port it would prefer, but those are behind us now.

Nice and compact, minimalist management software not great
31 January 2022

This unit has a nice and compact footprint. The capacity in raid 1 mode meets my needs. Very quiet in operation. However keep in mind the minimalist management software approach by Lacie. They only offer a Raid Manager and not a desktop manager like they offered with their older products. The lack of control for the extremely bright blue status led on the front panel means that that led is very glaring especially in reduced lighting situations.

Third LaCie array and not disappointed.

The LaCie drive I received was faulty and non-functioning straight out of the box. Poor LaCie/Seagate quality. The exterior hard drive case failed and would not spin up the internal drives. Luckily, the data was still OK on the 2 drives. I returned the drive to be replaced under warranty to the manufacturer —Seagate. It was a long, difficult and confusing process dealing with them. This is the third LaCie 2-Bay Dock I've bought from B&H. It worked great right out of the box. It was easy to set up and was exactly what I expected. The user documentation on Mac networking is non-existent. I'm still trying to figure out how to daisy-chain this drive with other drives but, other than that, it met my expectations exactly.
