This is a great value-- 5TB will give me the room I need to back up files and archive. This is not the fastest drive but I wasn't looking for speed-- just cheap storage. I was also looking for reliability. This is a good brand. Compact, rugged, and highly visible. Compatible with MAC or Windows. Make sure you use a dedicated cable-- USB C to USB C or USB C to USB A-- no adapters. I tried a USB A adapter on a USB C cable and my IMAC did not see the drive-- not even in disk utility. A regular USB C to USB A cable did the trick. It did not mount directly-- I still had to go in to disk utility but there it was. It comes formatted in EX-FAT but I reformatted easily in to MAC Journal Extended. I was up and running in minutes. I also plugged it in to a Windows 10 laptop ... MoreThis is a great value-- 5TB will give me the room I need to back up files and archive. I also plugged it in to a Windows 10 laptop before the reformat, and it saw the drive right off. A great purchase and I'm happy with the drive. It's no speed demon, but that's not why I picked it up. Image shows HD and USB C to USB A cable (cable not included).

I have at least 20 different Lacie Drives, but the ones with the USB-C port are the ones I have the most problems with staying connected to my M1 Pro Max Macbook Pro. The drives constantly disconnect no matter what cord I use or what port I use. I once walked away from my computer for 10 minutes, and came back to like 57 disconnected drive notifications. It's horrible. The only fix I have found is to buy the LaCie rugged drives that are MICRO B to USB-C. Have had no issues with those ones and really hope they keep making them, because I don't trust these one at all. Such a waste.

I really wanted to love this external hard drive. I've seen so many photographers using it so I figured it must be good, and it's made tough to survive bumps and bruises. However, I have had issues with it constantly on my MacBook. It will constantly disconnect and I will get the notification to Eject disk before disconnecting. I have changed my Mac settings to not put hard drives to sleep and the issue still persists. It happened enough to the drive I bought from B&H that the drive wound up failing, so I sent it to Seagate for a replacement and now the problem is even worse with the replacement. So much for putting my Lightroom library on it.Experience: 1 star. When the drive works, it works great and fast, so 2 stars.

I've owned this model drive for years and just bought three in 5TB sizes for my photography work. I've found them reliable and certainly durable. However, they are a bit slow so I would not recommend them for video. However, for photos these drives are just fine and I've never had one break on me before. The read/write speeds on these drives is roughly 120/110MB/s. For comparison's sake, the read/write speed for my MacBook's internal drive is 6,000+/4,000+, a huge difference.FWIW, I'm running a 2023 MacBook Pro with the M3Pro chip, 18GB of ram and Thunderbolt 4 ports. Finally, I had a world of trouble with the MacOS randomly disconnecting the drives until I reformatted them as MacOS Journaled. Since then, I've had no issues at all.
I've had one for years and it's the best archive drive I've got. The bumper does a good job of protecting the disk drive inside from bumps. The USB C connector overkill for the HDD inside but it's a lot more robust than the USB 3.0 mini connectors.Lots of reviews complain about the mechanical HDD being slow but speed is not the point of these. LaCie lists the max read/write speed as 130mbps, which is about as fast as you're going to get with an external HDD. Disk drives are for backing up and archiving. If/when the drive fails it's reasonably easy to recover data from a mechanical drive. SSD's are fast but when they fail they tend do do so without warning and recovering data can be impossible.Bottom line, if you want to edit directly off the drive, get an NVMe ... MoreI've had one for years and it's the best archive drive I've got. As a photographer, I would usually store all my edited photos in the external file besides the cloud storage I have. I was exporting a session from this external drive when suddenly it stopped working. It stopped becoming readable by my computer, or any other computer available. For no reason it just stopped working. I didn't drop it (even though website says it resists a 4ft drop) I didn't even move it. Nothing was wrong with the cable or C-Port. I was told by the Geek Squad that something went wrong on the inside of the product and there was nothing they could do to fix it. I then tried reaching LaCie's customer service, and they were really hard to get a hold of. The phone number on their website was busy, their website said we can reach them via live chat ... MoreAs a photographer, I would usually store all my edited photos in the external file besides the cloud storage I have. The phone number on their website was busy, their website said we can reach them via live chat between 7pm Sunday till 7pm Friday. I waited and reached out, they asked me for my serial number and asked if I have a backup. That is all they said. No further communication was had. They ghosted me. The website doesn't provide information regarding warranty service. It will tell you if you are under warranty, but not how to make use of it or instructions on how to proceed. Overall, I do not recommend this product at all. It's a $200 paperweight in my office that just serves as a great reminder of all the files it had that are now gone.
I’ve bought this external HD twice. First for my MacBook Pro, to use with Time Machine. Since it’s used for a laptop, I like the fact that it has a silicone(?) bumper. But the original reason I bought it was because it was USB-C (the little one), which meant I didn’t have to get a USB-B to USB-C converter. I’ve been happily using it for a few years, It travels with the laptop (bumpy rides), and has been a breeze to use.The most recent one I got was for my husband’s MacBook Pro. I discovered that he had NO BACK UP for his laptop (his only computer). So it was a no-brainer to get this external for him. I knew if it was anything complicated, he wouldn’t bother using it. Or, he would continuously ask all sorts of questions (What do I do to use this? (plug it in), Which ... MoreI’ve bought this external HD twice. First for my MacBook Pro, to use with Time Machine. (Yes, remember when you got a shutdown alert and thought you lost everything?).He does now use this external HD, And, he even uses it to transport other files (besides using Time Machine), since the HD has so much memory.
I’ve been using the LaCie Rugged 5TB External Hard Drive for a few months, and overall, I’m impressed with its performance and reliability. Here’s a breakdown of my personal experience:First off, the durability of this drive is outstanding. I work in various environments, including outdoors and in busy areas, so I need something that can handle bumps and drops. The bright orange rubber casing not only looks rugged but does the job of protecting the hard drive well. I’ve accidentally dropped it a couple of times, and it hasn’t skipped a beat — the shock resistance gives me peace of mind. Additionally, the IP54 water and dust resistance is a bonus for when I’m on the go.
Like the title says, I've had three of these die on me this summer. It might look rugged but that thin orange rubbery stuff around it doesn't offer enough compression to actually protect anything, and it's just a cheap HDD underneath. Sure there's a warranty and they offer data recovery but at a certain point it's not worth it, and it's not like I didn't have backups.I had a Seagate drive I used all the time last me about five years and I won't say I dropped it often but it did happen, until a drop finally killed it. I fixed the drive myself and was able to recover all the data and it's still going strong but figured I should get another drive to replace it just in case, and thought the rugged-looking LaCie would do the job, but the first one died after the first ... MoreLike the title says, I've had three of these die on me this summer. The second one did the same. The most recent one didn't even get dropped, I just put my data onto it after bringing it home and ejected it, then the next day it wouldn't load up when I plugged it in. 0 for 3, time to find something else.
I recently started editing long videos and the raw footage was taking up too much space on my desktop. This product has been helpful for storing footage and backing up completed projects. It has a USBC to USBC cable. Compatible with my MacBook Pro. It would have been amazing if I could connect the LaCie to my iPhone as well, but my iPhone has a lightning port, and the converter I bought does not work for transferring information.All-in-all, great product! I would recommend for anyone, with a compatible device, in need of storage.I purchased the product a month ago.
