No Sliding Sleeve! My rationale for buying this more expensive pencil was that it is listed as having a sliding sleeve, but this is a complete misrepresentation. You have to press down VERY hard for the sleeve to move, around 1.8 Newtons of force based on my measurement, compared to 0.1 Newtons for the Pentel Orenz 0.5 mm pencil.(See the Bleistiff blogs https://bleistift.blog/sliding-sleeve-pencils/ and https://bleistift.blog/2015/08/the-sliding-sleeve-and-the-pilot-color-eno/ for sliding sleeve forces.)Another issue is that once the retractable sleeve is recessed, it only comes out half way when knocking the top. I can pull it back out with needle-nose pliers, but it never extends all the way when knocking. If you are not a sliding-sleeve fan, this is a ... MoreNo Sliding Sleeve! My rationale for buying this more expensive pencil was that it is listed as having a sliding sleeve, but this is a complete misrepresentation. Very disappointed. The construction is mostly plastic, light weight but nothing special. The action feels off and the lead sleeve doesn't retract all the way back unless pushed with something solid. If you use your finger it can even puncture it, it's that difficult. The lead out of the sleeve also has wobble to it when writing. For the name brand and price, it's garbage.

i gotta say, i was pretty disappointed by the safari pencil, considering that the fountain pen is so good. couple of problems-1.) WIGGLE! the lead holder mechanism is not manufactured to very close tolerances, which means that the front tube will pivot back and forth while you write. the plastic tube and holder mechanism in general are very flexible, just enough that you feel like the whole pencil is wobbling around while you write. (I don't write with a lot of pressure either)2.) Eraser/lead advance - the eraser on this pencil is very sensitive to pushes. When you try to scrub out even a single letter you'll come back around to find that your lead has now extended out of the pencil a few times. Requires frequent resetting of the lead length. Consequently, the cap made it's way off of the pencil, and then out of my pocket. But i was left with a little rubber o-ring as a souvenir!the pencil makes up for this a bit in looks and ergonomics- it is a comfortable pencil to hold. it just inst very good at... being a mechanical pencil. if i hadn't lost the cap or pulled it apart a bunch of times tying to cure the wiggle problems, i would honesty try to return it.all that being said, the Safari fountain pen is world beater, so i guess the designers at Lamy just took the day off when they designed this. oh well.

I love the Lamy grips, this one is great also. I have been experimenting with larger grip sizes though, and personally I think its a little narrow for hours of writing. Great balance and weight though, will keep in my everyday carry pencil case. I wish this had a shaker advancing mechanism but that would ruin the weight and balance.
Awesome Pen Shop. I will use them again. And this Lamy pencil is the best . I had one for probably 40 years ! I lost or missplaced it. This was a replacement. Great color.
As the title indicates the pen is great. However staff should be more careful with stock management. The pen arrived with a very dirty price tag that displayed an amount some ten dollars less than I had paid. It felt as if I had been sent old stock and over-charged.
I have pens, pens, and more pens. I was looking for a fountain pen and someone recommended the a Lamy Safari because for the price they are fantastic pens, writing smoothly and beautifully making Callighraphy, AND HE WAS RIGHT!!! So I decided to try the Lamy Safari White Ballpoint Pen so I would have a pretty set to keep in my Art Journal, and WOW, beautiful inking; smooth flowing and just the righ amount. I am in love. i also got the Safari Rollerball to match and then I back-ordered the new Lamy Safari Cream Color as a 3-peice set too. I really think this pen writes as well as some of my far more exensive pens and better than some. I am a very happy customer.
My new Lamy Safari Red mechanical pencil is lightweight but beautifully balanced. The triangular grip makes writing easy and comfortable. The eraser is effective and doesn't leave smears as have other mechanical pencils I have tried. I can recommend.
I just love the style and the colours of the Lamy Safari.
