Lamy Studio Fountain Pen - LX All Black

I can see why the Studio line remains popular. The design is perfectly symmetrical and perfectly balanced. The body is thicker than a typical ballpoint, which increases comfort IMO — but not so thick that it calls attention to itself. The cap clicks on the back when posting, so it doesn't rely on cap-lip friction that would mar the finish. I love that this section is matte black and not shiny — it improves the grip while writing. The blacked-out nib is gorgeous and a nice perk on this model.Issues with this pen are:The cap has a "barely-there" click to close. It's concerning me. The cap may not always stay on securely. Since other Studios have shiny sections, maybe Lamy did not factor in the thickness of the powder coating in this model where the lip grips the indentation to close.The nib is attractive, and smooth. But my Lamy EF nib is not writing an EF line, even by generous German standards. It's writing like a wet, wet Western medium, or a Japanese Broad. Even using a dry ink, the paper is saturated and bleeding through. If you write for fun on expensiver paper with shading inks, you'll enjoy it. But I thought this was a "daily working" pen, and there's no way it works in an office setting with this ink flow. Seems like the standard feed is tuned for a stub, and not tuned for the EF nib I ordered.I replaced the Lamy EF nib with a cheap Wing Sung EF nib, and now it writes correctly, though still rather wet thanks to the feed — and the cheap replacement nib is actually bouncier and smoother than the Lamy nib. Pity it's silvery steel though.If I was also rating the overall experience, this would be a 3-star purchase. Drop messed up the ordering process, and denied us the promised option to buy a converter (which annoyingly is an extra charge on a premium pen). The pens shipped late. FedEx misrouted the package, which arrived late. FedEx's tracking notifications stopped arriving. By the time it finally arrived, I didn't really care if it ever did. I'd rather have bought at retail and had the option to return/exchange it, track it correctly, and feel a bit less helpless during the process.edit: I keep fondling it, so I think that's a good sign.Also, thanks to an astute suggestion from someone else here, I used teflon tape to help the pen close better by backing off the barrel body on the section, which allows more space for the cap to grip.

A perfect pocket pen

I already have a Safari, an AL-Star, and an LX. Of those three, the AL-Star is my favorite due to its slightly longer grip and overall length. But this Studio is exponentially better. Yes, it is shorter, especially when capped, but that makes it the perfect pen to stay in a pocket, since the clip holds well. Had been using a TWSBI mini, but no longer. Sweet that it comes with a converter. The EF nib could never be called buttery smooth, even with some grit work, but it is a good enough writer and the pen has a nice balance. Wonderful minimalist design, with the cheerful cap click! A pen to bring a smile to the face. The extra cost is definitely worth it.

A solid notch above Safaris

Initially, this pen attracted me because it's a Special Edition and it looks pretty. My only experience with Lamy was with the Safari and, while it's a solidly and precisely constructed pen, I don't particularly enjoy writing with it, so my expectations for the Studio were low. I was mistaken. While the nib looks the same as on a Safari, this is not the same nib. The nib on the Studio has a lot less drag than the nib on the Safari, which almost feels like it's coated with rubber, and it has very light feedback, which is completely absent in the Safari. The result is that it's immensely more pleasant to use the Studio than a Safari.The body is made of a light alloy that's cool to the touch. I'd worry about damaging the tip if you're not gentle when closing it. Lamy should have made the lining smoother to avoid this.I rated the value as medium because you pay a hefty surplus over the regular Studio for the privilege of having a Special Edition that looks prettier. For that same reason, I also wouldn't recommend this pen for a beginner.Note: my review predates the arrival of the pen in the Goulet store because I got my hands on the pen from a local brick & mortar shop that had it hidden in a drawer. The employees didn't even know they had it before I asked about it. It was my intention to buy it from Goulet Pens, but with extremely limited supplies, I didn't want to risk missing out.

Batman's pen

This pen is a stunner. The matte finish, grip section, and laser-engraved nib create a really nice effect. Pro tip: ink this bad boy up with Noodler’s HOD and you won’t regret it. Arms uplifted and face to the sky, he yelled “THIS IS THE FOUNTAIN PEN I DESERVE, NOT THE FOUNTAIN PEN I NEED!!” Whatever that means.I sure do miss my Studio, but I’m glad it’s going to a good cause. Lamy Studio - Black Edition - EF

This is a great pen, I especially like the rubber like section for gripping, it's not too tacky, not slippery, just right. The pen puts out the line you would expect from a Lamy EF, just a bit wider than a Japanese fine. It is consistent, and the flow is wet but not overly so and depends on the ink used. The snap cap is great, a very nice feel. I did not see any problem with the looseness of the cap as others have commented on. It seems fine. Posting is best for me and it snaps securely on the back end. This is a super nice looking and professional pen, many comments from observers on this one.

I debated with myself for a long time before I took the risk of buying this pen: the Lamy Studio Lx All Black Special Edition. I’m delighted that I took the risk. I did so primarily because of the looks of the pen. It is simply beautiful. What surprised me was the superb nib and the writing quality. Lamy nibs run wide. Order a size down from what you’d buy in another brand. I ordered the extra-fine nib. It is not in the least scratchy. I’d liken it to a fine nib from a Japanese pen. The nib itself is a work of art. Although it is a steel nib, I would definitely not replace it with a Lamy gold nib, as some have suggested. No, no. This nib is fine-tuned and writes beautifully. It is even capable of a bit of line variation. Love the looks and the feel of this fountain pen

I was very impressed with the delivery and fullfilment of my order, overall I received the pen is 3 days. I like this pen because unlike the Safari it offers the traditional grip of a regular pen. I naturally rotate the nib when writing and for long writing sessions the Lamy Safari doesn't work that well for me. But with the studio it is a different experience. The pen is metal and is well balance, it makes not much difference if you post the pen or not. It has a comfortable grip in my hand the nib is very smooth for a stainless steel nib. I was surprised to find a cartridge converter with this pen as my experience with Lamy is they sell the cartridge converters separately. On the downside Lamy uses propiertary cartridges so you have to use their ink cartridges. Really good pen!

I've generally been dissatisfied with the cheaper LAMYs (i.e., Safari), but I have a LAMY 2000 that is one of the smoothest fountain pens I've ever written with, so I thought I would give this pen a chance (like the 2000, I liked the design of the Studio). Well, I was pleasantly surprised! It's a nice writing pen!! The 2000 is much smoother, but the Studio has a nice resistance on regular paper (on higher end stationary, it's like writing on glass). Stealth LAMY is sweet

I saw Brian Goulet's review of this pen. I don't like the typical Studio design with the slick and shiny grip. This pen, however, got everything right. Not only no shiny slick grip, but no shiny nib or clip. I know many other lines have the stealth design. They are all cool. This just happens to be the one I saw first, and so I leaped on it.This is my first LAMY. I am a Pilot lover, and Waterman, too. So, French and Japanese. This is my first German pen. This pen is very utilitarian, which is perfectly on-brand for German engineering.I love that the cap, though metal, is not too heavy when posted on the end of the pen, even for my dainty lady-like hands. I usually don't like flat tops and bottoms to pens; I prefer the cigar-shaped designs. But flat is fitting with this rugged, understated, simple design. I like it. The slip cap snaps beautifully -- a crisp "click." I fight to try not to play with snapping it on and off over and over.I got the extra fine nib, because I usually use Japanese fine nibs and use ****** quality paper. This extra fine German nib is the same as the Japanese fine I am used to and really like. Even if I was not pleased with the extra fine, I could swap it out with a readily available LAMY nib from Goulet or other vendors. So, I bought with confidence.The little mark up for a limited edition design was worth not getting the shiny slick metal grip. I know this is a pen I will have and use forever (unless someone knocks me out and steals it while I lay helplessly unconscience... even then my body may fight for this pen without the full participation of my brain). The hype over LAMY looks to be well-founded (I had my doubts before I bought this). I bought my niece a LAMY Safari limited edition, but she doesn't know. She may never know... it may now be mine. Shhhhhhh.
