A perfect tool for professional work

I bought it because the Wave+ was out of stock at my local camping shop. A somewhat impulse purchase but I am extremely happy that I did. This is one useful beast. I use it as a live sound and event tech, I use it in the garage when working on cars, I take it camping, do odd jobs around the house and much more. The pliers are beastly and the wire cutter, stripper and crimper have saved the day multiple times. Love the swappable bits and saw/file as well. The size and weight don't bother me as you get a lot of tool for the size and weight and they fit perfectly in my hands. I have EDCd it and once you get used to it it's not bad at all.Two recommendations for Leatherman - the swappable flathead/PH1/2 bit is great on tools that have no other screwdrivers but ... MoreI bought it because the Wave+ was out of stock at my local camping shop. It would be superb if there was a bit that had the great PH1/2 on one side and either a PH3 or very small philips on the other side. Either would be more useful for many people than three flatheads.Second, it would be great if there was a CM154 or S30V option to upgrade the knife blade. 420HC is good and better than many others but that would be a cool upgrade.Nevertheless, I am giving the Surge a perfect score as it is the closest to a perfect multitool for me and by far the best I have ever used.

I have now ordered 2 of these Surge Multitools off of amazon only to decide to return them within 5 minutes of having then out of the box. These were manufacturer sealed upon arrival, so I don’t blame amazon, but both have QC issues. The first was loosely assembled…..everywhere. Gravity would make it unfold for example, where as my original that I loved, had to purposefully be unfolded but held it’s closed shape under most regular movements, which is what I prefer. I returned it thinking it was a fluke and re-ordered only to find that while the second surge was tighter than the first, but still not where my original was, it had one locking release piece that was so loose that it just clanked around with any small movement, unlike the tool locking release on the other side or on any of the previous tools. Super annoying and absolutely unacceptable with what these things cost. If you’re looking for a quality tool, look elsewhere I guess. It seems Leatherman just craps these things out with out any consideration to quality control or their final fit and finish anymore.

As good as I hoped it would be.

This Surge is built like a tank. It's a beauty. The file is so pretty I almost wanted to kiss it. Everything locks into place with such a solid feel. The tolerances seem tight; the needle-nose meets perfectly and has a little bite right at the end; just perfect, and could be used for some pretty fine work. I got the black one and it came in great condition with a touch of oil where it should be. I like pretty much everything about it to be honest. I'll enjoy using it. I also got the bit set; 40 bits, very nice. I also like the ratchet very much; it fits well and can be used alone, also. So if you have a decoration there, it will be covered by the clip when you use it. No biggie, just be aware if you have it customized. Second: I bought the "Surge Set" that comes with the bit set, ratchet, and clip. This set DOES NOT come with the sheath shown on the "Surge Set" picture on the web site, which is also listed as "Nylon Sheath with Pockets", and also on the picture of the Surge you buy by itself. THAT sheath has a holder for your bit extension or ratchet you can see in the picture, and a snap. The one you actually get has no holder for the ratchet, has velcro instead of a snap, and is big enough for the Surge, but nothing else. There is not room for any of the bit set or ratchet or anything else. The tool is so great I'm not too discouraged about it; however, I will buy a sheath somewhere else since I can't seem to trust how they display them on the Leatherman site.

Customized Surge.
7 March 2022

I’m very happy with my Surge. It’s a well thought out piece of equipment. All tools function perfectly, and are easy to use and placed intuitively. Easy to access and easy to put away. The blades are super sharp and the scissor is oversized, sharp, and very easy access. The customization is well done with engraving of patterns and text. In addition there’s a pocket/elastic tube on the side with room for a Bit Kit ratchet/extension tool (or a pen-sized implement of any type.

From a Rebar for 12 years to a Surge for life
10 September 2022

After 12 years I decided to upgrade from a rebar I carried since high school to a new leatherman that’s better suited to what life throws at me nowadays. The Leatherman surge is a very nice upgrade over the rebar. The weight and the size of it inspire confidence that I can tackle many of the everyday tasks at home or at work. The addition of outside access scissors is very nice to have. The bit exchanger as well as the swappable saw/files really adds to life long use. The surge has a very nice, well put together design and you can see the strength and quality of the tools in both the smooth unfolding of the pliers and the strength of the joints that hold all the tools together. Leathermans BEST multitool.....BUT one minor flaw...and more so for me personally
23 October 2023

First, let me say, everything about this tool is incredible! I own multiple Leatherman tools from their original back from 1995 to my latest, the Surge. There's nothing about the Surge I don't like as far as tools go...with one minor detail and for me, a very annoying one. They market the Surge to be used with their available lanyard ring/pocket clip BUT, the pocket clip fits way too loosely to the point it swivels almost a half inch when installed. The "cap" at the end is loose even without any ring or clip attached while the other "end caps" are tightly secrued with no movement. This same clip which is also marketed to fit the Wave+ which I also own, fits solidly and doesnt move at all. The "cap" at the end is loose even without any ring or clip attached while the other "end caps" are tightly secrued with no movement. This same clip which is also marketed to fit the Wave+ which I also own, fits solidly and doesnt move at all. I've seen other reviewers have this same issue and have posted a video of the exact problem. I paid to have it sent in to Leatherman for their warranty team to address with no success. They returned it "untouched" it appears but, sent a molle case (big and bulky) almost as if to appease me and my issue, which I found unhelpful as this is why im wanting the pocket clip! LOL.I do appreciate the gesture mind you! BUT, I've contacted the Leatherman warranty team and their response was "The tool is so big and heavy, the tool was meant for sheath carry and the clip was designed for full size tools, not heavy duty. It just happens to "fit it". This response is not acceptable. Not everyone likes to or can use a sheath (dependent on clothing worn) It's bulky on the belt plus people might carry other items on their belt and don't want to add more. This is why pocket knives have pocket clips unlike older days when Buck and Sherade knives were carried in sheaths only or deep down inside a pocket. They market the pocket clip accessory to be used with the Surge, so, it should work properly. If they didnt properly design the clip, they should of had their engineers design one that would work for it, not sell it as a multi fit clip for other models such as the wave+, etc. Leatherman? Are you willing to assist myself and others who are having this same issue? I hope to receive a response, if not, I'll know where I stand for future multitool purchases and recommendations...and that's not with Leatherman.

My fingers don't fing
26 October 2023

I have cancer and have been on chemotherapy, which is causing my fingernails to separate and my fingers to develop neuropathy and stop working as advertised. I especially have problems opening resealable bags, which it seems all food comes in nowadays, and changing batteries, which my trail cams require every few weeks. Thankfully my Leatherman Surge and Rev multitools are always nearby, and give me the ability to handle and manipulate things, particularly items that require pinching or picking motions. The only thing I could wish for are easier secondary tools, which at present are nearly impossible to access without fingernails or feeling in my fingertips.

Still too tight
29 April 2022

This is my second review of the Surge. The blades of my black Surge were so tight they opened in jerky movements with my thumb. Closing the tool after use of the pliers was tight enough that when they broke loose they crushed my fingers.I sent them back to have the fasteners broken loose, I tried but could not do it, I assume because of thread locker. They seem a tiny bit looser, but three of the four fasteners are almost rounded out now. These were in good shape when I sent it back to Leatherman. The technician did this to my tool. With it being to tight to loosen and the fasteners damaged I speculate that the only way to repair it is to grind off the Torx heads and install new hardware.I've had the original Leatherman, Supertool, Wave and Charge Ti in addition a ... MoreThis is my second review of the Surge. Straight up love this thing
25 January 2023

So this review is honest as it gets. I ordered the surge as a birthday gift to myself, absolutely used it as a tool, did not baby the thing. I broke the awl on my first one attempting to align an ignition switch in the correct orientation. I also been the flat screwdriver bit loosening water clamps and snapped off the pocket clip with no effort. Got in touch with leatherman support and they had me a new one out. So skeptical of the tool I absolutely put it through its paces, I carry it every day, and use it for my occupation and hobbies. The new one outlived all expectations, tackling thigs from automotive repair, to working on equipment and firearms on the range. I added the ratcheting bit extender and bit kit. It sees reasonable every day use and does very well, ... MoreSo this review is honest as it gets. It sees reasonable every day use and does very well, as expected for a tool at its price point. I can say that it is worth the money and have order the crunch as well.

Purchased here and received on time. When I unboxed it, the pliers seem to have been forged/casted/machined roughly and wasnt properly finished. The pliers are perfectly function and the tool works flawlessly, but the finish on the pliers left a little to be desired. I am also torn as I consider the Surge to be a premium multitool and no bit kit was included. The Surge as a tool is more than capable to handle any job not requiring actual tools. You might be able to put IKEA furniture together or change a battery, but dont for a second thing you can replace a mechanics tool set and rebuild a engine. Overall, I'm happy with the purchase as the function overides the finish.
