I agree with all of the praise that has been heaped upon this model. It looks great, the functions are clever and I enjoyed building it. But I do have one complaint: each side of the radio's "case" consists of 28 pieces of beautifully molded teal plastic, and once assembled are rather heavy. There are 28 pieces in each side, and they are each 6" long. Yet their attachment to the model consists of only two points of contact, and neither can be said to be Lego's sturdiest type of contact. There could have easily been four or more connections. I found one side or the other to keep popping out as I continued to build beyond their attachment, leading me to do what, I'm sure is abhorrent to all builders of Lego's fine models: I broke out the Gorilla glue and did what I ... MoreI agree with all of the praise that has been heaped upon this model. Such an amazing and enjoyable build. The design for this piece is excellent and every detail is well thought out. It replicates the workings, look and feel of an actual radio. The internal mechanisms for the dial knobs to function were a joy to build. Smart battery is a great touch. The retro colours are fabulous and very much in keeping with the period. All pieces sit flush so that the whole is solid to handle and move around - just like a radio! It takes pride of place on my mantelpiece. Definitely the most enjoyable and rewarding build in terms of final product (up there with the Parisian restaurant). Well done Lego!

When I first saw this set, I thought it was one of the least interesting and least relevant to me fandoms possible. But I was wrong. This set provided the best or second best building experience I have thus far gotten from following the product instructions (D&D being the primary competition to this). The few technical mechanics of this radio set were very precise and made me nervous because my hands are steady, but were sturdy at almost all stages of assembly. But overall this build was elegant and perfectly paced. The skill of the designer is well expressed here. The color was shocking at first but fits a surprising amount of modern decors. And, of course: the sound features. The gimmick of the sound brick feels appropriate here but I wish more snippets were included in the track list and/or more 70s/80s tracks, as the ones used resemble 30s/40s radio far more. But the phone-inside feature is what pushes this set over the edge post-building experience. This set becomes a practical item as it holds the phone quite strongly and in an upright position, so you can put on a podcast and close the back of the radio to direct the sound out of the front speaker grill, or you can leave the back open and the radio serves as a pop socket replacement. Truly an unexpectedly masterpiece set.

Do not wait to install the Sound Brick
17 June 2024

In what feels like a marketing decision, rather than what would be the most practical for the build, the Sound Brick installation is listed as the very last step. When you are building the internal components of the radio, which are the most technical and have the most moving parts, this is when you should install the Sound Brick. The second half of the build is the outer casing, the grill, the antenna, and the handle. If all of the internal mechanisms aren't clicking together properly, you will have to tear apart the build to assess what is wrong. Unfortunately, this is what I had to do. On my second attempt, it was still quite difficult to get all of the internal components working as advertised. There is no practical reason to install the Sound Brick last. Following the instructions that listed the Sound Brick as the last step was a serious misstep in an otherwise interesting set. In the future, please prioritize practicality above all else.

Loved building this one. The overall look is great and reminds you of the old transistor radios from years ago. The sound brick with the audio clips was a fun extra with the radio, and the ability to pop my phone in and use it as a radio to play music is an added bonus. It looks great displayed on your shelf too.It would have been great, however, that in addition to the sound brick if there was a blue tooth compatible brick that you could add to the set (or included even better) that you could just play music remotely through the device.I saw one person put their echo dot devise inside theirs and I love that idea as well.Don't miss this one, you will be sorry you did!

Horrible Experience
8 July 2024

I am beyond disappointed. I have had this set for almost 3 weeks and cant continue the build because as soon as Bag TWO it was clear that parts were missing. To make sure i opened all the bags (but kept them in their pile) and went through the whole book and yup…pieces were missing. They put a bunch of Extra pieces I dont need though. So I saw that you can reorder for free missing pieces…been waiting over a week now and still nothing in the mail. Smh. This was my first set and I splurged for this one in such excitement. I wouldve just returned it and got my money back but it is opened. So yea…it was a joyful experience at first but this is as far as I can go (picture included). I was planing on buying the Polaroid next but now I really am so turned off by Lego that ... MoreI am beyond disappointed. More Than Worth It

This is only the second review I've ever felt the need to leave because I am just in awe at this set. Build experience, final product, interactivity - all PHENOMENAL! One example of incredible attention to detail - when you tune to the different "stations," you need to turn the dial to the "on" position first or else the sounds won't actually play. Even putting your phone inside doesn't feel like a gimic. When you play your own music through it, the set muffles the volume in such a way that it really sounds like it's coming out of a radio. If I had to give ONE complaint, I wish the sound brick played more sounds. The ones it has are great (and there are even a few easter eggs!), but even more would have been appreciated. Overall it's just ok.

It's not really a bad model, but there are a few places in the design/building process I think should have been revisited before its general release. The biggest one is that the spiral gear is twisted in the wrong direction. The movement of the needle should have followed the rotation of the dial. Clockwise should move it to the right, and counterclockwise should move it to the left. Next would be the layout of the clear window pieces. I think it would have served a better aesthetic if the line break in the window had overlapped with the line break in the frequency display. Then, when assembling the front grill, there is a line of three 1x8 with rail bricks directly above the LEGO logo. These bricks are only supported on one end. Some small modifications or different length choices could have had these rails supported on both ends, making the overall front piece just a bit easier to build and more sturdy.

Throwback to the good old days
19 June 2024

I bought this kit for myself as a gift for Father's Day because my wife refused to get me the M1 Abrams MBT I asked for! Overall it was a fairly challenging build. There were a few times looking at the directions that I forgot a piece or to manipulate some section and had to go back, take it apart, make the correction and continue on. But that's all part of the fun! The only drawback I have is that there are only snippets on the sound block and not full songs. Small price to pay though. When finished it really took me back to growing up and hanging out with friends listening to the radio! Good times, great oldies! Definitely a cool build and one I'd recommend for any Gen Xer out there looking for some cool throwback from way back!

Wonderful set with a nice surprise
20 June 2024

Got this as a bit of a whim. I thought it would look nice with the typewriter, and it has a fairly small surface area when built, which is great for people who have limited display space (and you will want to keep this available to display and show off). The internal structure is mostly technic and provided variety and some challenge. And is very cleverly designed to allow you to place a phone inside to play your own music/podcast from. There's also a new sound box with some surprise sounds which my nephews love playing with. The external shell has a couple of neat tricks for coming together, but the real fun is had inside.Highly recommend. Fun to make, great to display and functional to top it off!
