I will go over this set and review it for buildable figures, playability, design, value and overall opinion. Let's-a-go now!Buildable Figures: The buildable figures here are excellent for a starter course! Here you get Bowser Junior, a popular Mario enemy and an easy way to obtain him. A Goomba which is perfect for a mob army of the enemy. And of course the main star of the show: Mario! He is quickly put together with his overalls, yellow buttons, flesh-toned ears and of course his infamous cap! For his size it's incredible the technology put into this little guy. He has a light sensor at the bottom that can detect 4 colors (as the time of this review): Green for grass, Blue for water, and yellow for sand. These three offering 1 coin every 7 steps. The red color ... MoreI will go over this set and review it for buildable figures, playability, design, value and overall opinion. He has a light sensor at the bottom that can detect 4 colors (as the time of this review): Green for grass, Blue for water, and yellow for sand. These three offering 1 coin every 7 steps. The red color representing lava of course burns Mario up, losing his power-up and screaming for his life can easily be relieved if placed immediately on water, earning 4 coins in the process! Of course there are also small code scanners that have the ability to be read by Mario whether it is a challenge he must overcome or an enemy he must hit or some coins he can collect! Admittedly I wished this set could come with an extra enemy for instance a Koopa Troopa or something to add to the already incredible liveliness to the set. (4/5) Incredible technology put into Mario himself with sounds, the LED screen, the battery life (lasting approx. 30 hours of use), the scanner. Also the Bowser Junior build looking spectacular in LEGO form along with the well made Goomba gives more personality to the starter course on its own. Another small mob would easily give this a (5/5) especially considering the price for what you get here.Playability: Playability here is incredible! Once completed building the parts for your course, there is no guide on how to put it together, once it's complete, you must configure it yourself which I like that for bringing in the creativity side of Nintendo and LEGO of making or building your own course which I love! In the LEGO Super Mario App there are small video guides on how to go for instance a certain challenge or how to get started on a course or how many hits an enemy can do or what the ? Block can give it's incredibly easy to get started having fun! LEGO Mario is able to hop into a pipe with a 60 second timer beginningg, having to beat the course you created whilst collecting the most coins throughout your course, it's genius! I love how you can either have Bowser Junior easily knocked out with the platform you can step on, you can have a stationary tower wher you have to manually knock him off or you can stack the towers on top of each other to give the tower more power in your level for the closest word I can think of. Even outside the course itself LEGO Mario can interact with non-LEGO items such as the blue from the carpet or red from the sofa or green from a sweater, whilst carrying along his happy expressions and exciting actions! Overall (5/5) for playability. It is excellent what LEGO and Nintendo have brung to the table for what you get here!Design: Design wise these builds are so great it's possible they can even be used for minifigure scaled sets! The design of some of the enemies, the clouds, the trees and bushes, the small tower, the flag pole, the pipe mold. Excellently pulled off and well done! My favorite design cue is definitely the way the trees are pulled off with the pole connection and the green recolor of those round parts make it instantly recognizeable for older Mario fans. I am also completely okay with some of the blocky design of some characters like the man Mario himself. It perfectly combines well with the blocky yet slightly round asthetic LEGO and Nintendo have approached here and it's completely fine with me. I feel if there were some desert plates added it would make this feel much more complete. (4.5/5) If there were desert parts it would allow the builder to make a whole Mario world and it could also let the builder experience all 4 default terrain colors for when first engaging with Mario and those terrain plates. But the design of everything else is spot on.Value: People have bashed this for being $60. Not worth it considering 231 pieces is about $20 worth and the Mario is $40??? Yadayadayada... but holy cow it's only possible to see how amazing this set is to not worry about the price and to see the playability and the potential for what you can do with the parts you are given. This set is amazing for what you get. LEGO Super Mario has infinite possibilities for what you can do! While the part count is low, that doesn't mean Mario counts as a .10 cent part as well, so much thought, passion and creativity was put into this thing and for people like me who love play, this is excellent for those people. Granted I think batteries should have been included however I feel that with what you get here it is indeed a fair price and a good investment if you plan on getting just this one set and not the expansion sets. (2/5) I give this price a 2/5 simply for while it is excellent for playability, more parts could have been added for that price tag however 2/5 isn't bad it's "Fair" according to LEGO. So I say this is a "fair" price, and is an excellent starter set for going into the LEGO Mario theme!Personal opinion: I feel this set is for those who finally had their young childhood dreams come true. For people who have been asking for something like this for almost over 20 years! The demand has been pushed for a theme like this constantly and we got what we got but at the same time we did not. We expected Mario minifigures but we got something totally weird yet fantastic in creativity and play value. I think I will be having a blast with these sets for quite some time and I recommend it to all Mario fans young and small and LEGO fans looking for a change of taste and wonder about the technology going into the Mario figure. I give this set a (4.5/5) rounding it up to a (5/5)! Excellent set LEGO and Nintendo, and continue to innovate and never let us grow up from what we love! As for now take care and see you guys another time! :D

90% of my frustration with this set would be resolved if it came with your classic paper instruction booklet. Instead your kiddo has to wait for you to download an app, install a bunch of stuff via Bluetooth to the Mario, find the instructions - all while probably caffeine deprived. Then! The instructions require constant use of your phone (unless your kiddo had their own I guess). And because of Bluetooth and constantly playing midi music, the app burns through your phones battery before the kiddo completes the set. Why are legos awesome? They’re not screen time toys and they are QUIET. Not true here, not true at all. The other 10% of my frustration is the terrible box design. Like so many other folks I did not realize you needed the starter set before other sets. ... The kiddo likes to play with it. But it’s noisy and not as creative as other sets.

I picked this set up on a whim, mainly to get the Lego Mario figure. (I ordered the Lego NES recently and really wanted those sound effects!)That said, I was startled at the $60 price tag on a set with only 200-some pieces. Honestly, the number of custom molds, printed stickers, and Lego Mario being a pretty neat piece of technology really add to the starter set's overall appearance and I think they did a good job. I do wish they would sell Lego Mario as a standalone item rather than charging $60 every time, but as a tutorial set, this thing is awesome. In addition, it appears that all the Barcode pieces are pre-set stickers, which gives me some concern on how these sets will last in the long term. Before you buy - understand that you HAVE to, I repeat - HAVE TO ... Lego Mario is bluetooth based, so to use most of his features like clocking time, getting updates/etc, you have to have him connected to a phone. He still works without the phone, but I'm not sure if you can get past setup without one. In addition, there are no physical instructions. All instructions have to be read through the app which is really frustrating. Because the builds in this set are so simple, I wish there was one instruction rather than 9+ modules of 3 step builds. No physical instructions (I believe) is meant to lead people towards the app so they get the full experience, but it's really frustrating as a user. That said, for those excited about an officially licensed Lego Nintendo set, this is a fantastic first buy. While not entirely displayable, this set is 100% meant for play. The sound effects and responses to color, codes, etc is incredible. I was hesitant when I saw that Lego wasn't doing typical sets for this theme, but I think it came out super well and kids especially will love it. Overall, I'd rate a 7/10. The Lego Mario figure is an amazing piece of technology, I think Lego/Nintendo did a great job creating a theme that was playable and respected the original game, and it's definitely a cool set to kick back with and unwind. The characters (which I think is what most of us are here for) transition excellently to brick form with the exception of the code on their heads/backs. Bowser Jr. is an awesome brickbuild and I'm happy they included more than just a few goombas. Just be warned about the cost and the all-digital instructions.

This set is ideal for anyone who loves Lego and Super Mario. In terms of complexity it is a fairly simple kit but provides entertainment right from when you start building it. Unusually for a Lego set you need to download the free LEGO Super Mario app for 'inspirations for fun ways to play' rather than it coming with a set of paper instructions. However since the idea is that you can invent your own arrangements of items that works OK as long as the user has a device to load the app on. Mario requires batteries to run. Note that the Mario character is comparatively heavy and this can be a slight issue on some of the obstacles which are sometimes quite flimsy and can slide about. There are a number of expansion packs that you can purchase to further increase the options (but it can start to get expensive if you get lots of them). All-in-all this is a fun flexible set.
I'm old enough to have been playing Mario since the NES first came out and this really does emulate Super Mario Bros 1 and 3 perfectly. Fun to build (although the boy built this particular section of the course) and looks great when finished. Partly because of the colours chosen but also because you can genuinely mix and match all the pieces in to any order you like. This gets even better when you have multiple series kits although the 1 minute timer does mean you have no hope of completing a large course. I thought it would be nice if when you click Start on the app it asks you which kits you have your course built from and it adjusts the timer to suit.Mario himself is really nicely rendered and the voice is accurate to the game Mario. Fortunately you can turn the voice off as it did begin to grate after a bit of play. The kit not only has the unique Mario figure but it also has the start pipe and the end flag. Keep these separate if you have multiple kits to make building courses easier. The big downside for me was that you have no build instructions in the kit it all has to be downloaded through the app. Make sure your device has full battery before you start, especially if you are building multiple sets in the series at the same time or else you can get in the situation I was in where 2 bags from the end my battery died. I would definitely have preferred to have a full instruction book with the kit.I was tempted to mark this down because of my dissatisfaction with the build instruction situation but, you know what, it is such a fun kit to build and play I really couldn't bring myself to do it.Number Of Pieces: 231Approximate Price Per Piece: £4.62Build Time: 45 Minutes
I bought this today for my grandson who was so excited when he took it home. I was unhappy that the building instructions are digital rather than paper based. The download was very slow for some reason but the progress bar is not reflective of the true position. The building instructions seems very un-intitutive with videos interspersed. The problem is that the videos require Super Mario to have been connected to Bluetooth. That in itself is a feat. As with most Lego, there was a software update, but even having done that, trying to connect via Bluetooth was a feat in itself and the software is very un-informative as too if the connection has been made.My grandson was OK at following the digital instructions despite that I was unhappy that this required more use ... The software is USELESS. The moment he placed Super Mario onto the start platform, the software hung with strobing grey/black diagonal lines across the screen… though when he completed the course it then came up with the finished screen (still on black and grey diagonal strobing lines!)My grandson loves Super Mario, and is simply now playing with that model rather then the whole kit - if I didn't think that it would upset him, I would have immediately returned the kit to the store.I am a great Lego fan but this item is really not worthy of them - I have a number of their Bluetooth controlled models, and I can say that this item is not worthy of their name and the software needs a lot of work.
I give the Mario a 5/5, he's really great and I personally found him to have just the right level of interactivity vs using your imagination. I really wouldn't want him any more advanced, he really just adds a bit of sound and feedback to actions.Finding out how he's going to react to various stickers is a huge hit (4yr old). Absolutely loves it and feverishly checks Marios stomach to see "FIRE!", "GRASS!", "A MUSHROOOOOOM!". A lot of laughs have been had and a week on, there's still plenty of requests to have another turn.Note you do not need the iPad at all once the build is over, it's really just some flourish. While I actually think the digital instructions are excellent, the steps are easier to follow and the ability to highlight just new pieces (with rotation) makes even more complex builds, easier for young ones.I do ultimately agree with other parents, it's not good to only have the digital. It limits the parents choice in what sort of play you can offer. I would settle for a balance, at least offer us the instructions for home printing if we so choose. The starter course is as suggested, a starter. Unfortunately it's just rather dull and might give people a bad first impression of what you can expect from the rest of the series.I wonder if it would not have been better to just sell Mario with the Pipe and Flag, then just let people build the courses a la carte from the various expansions. In the end, despite the overall 3/5, the set is a necessity and does the job. It's ok but just a strange intro choice.I would highly recommend the addition of the two cheaper expansions, Pokey's Desert and Thowmps Lava Trouble. When you put these with the starter, then you're talking a 5/5 experience :)We're very excited to try out the mid-range expansions and one day to splurge on Bowsers Castle! The series as a whole is a 5/5 for us, just a really wonderful and fun bunch of sets.
This is a very exciting set to play for kids. It come with all what you would expect from Lego but more. With normal Lego sets would be usually a spur to build followed by some make believe play. This set is a lot of fun to build (albeit less pieces), but then after the Mario gadget turns the make believe play into a true interactive experience (revolutionary). The Mario reacts to the surface it’s on and the movement it receives with very fun sounds and comical expressions. My son was immediately hooked to that alone. After that he could play an infinite amount by creating your own courses like a video game designer (a kids dream job?). The sets offer such a great experience, that it’s really worth the try rather than getting another (whatever series) Lego set.
Bought this a week or 2 ago and my sons already been adding to it, you can get mini add on packs like power up costumes and such which are only around 10pound each, He loves using the app on his phone you press the blutooth button on mario and turn blutooth on your phone and you can connect mario to it this would also work on tablets ect. Once connected the app will show you how many coins youve got off your level you built with the lego and will tell you everything youve interacted with onscreen, almost everything is electronically interactive through the barcode stickers on certain pieces, Like for instance theres a barcode sticker on the bomb from the bowser jr. Clown car pack and the bottom of the mario figure scans the barcode from the bomb and does a bomb ... Clown car pack and the bottom of the mario figure scans the barcode from the bomb and does a bomb sound and explosion sound. The mario figure requires x2 AAA batteries not included. These are just the same as the ones used in tv remotes. Also the instructions for any packs are built into the app, no paperbased ones. I reccomend this my sons had tons of fun and its gave him a new hobbie over the easter holidays.
Important thing to note for those who don't know. This is the ONLY way to get the Lego Mario figure.Stop leaving 1 star reviews just because the set you bought doesn't come with him despite it being explicitly stated on the box.Now that I've gotten that out of the way, time to address the elephant in the room. The Lego Mario figure alone makes the set worth the £50 price point, the way it figure reads the QR codes to make all kinds of noises and play music is outstanding and something that nobody could have seen coming before these sets were unveiled, Examples include him falling asleep when you lay him down long enough, getting dizzy after falling over/being shaken around too much even to the point of simulating damage by losing his mushroom power up. The list goes on. Although there are several who resent this little guy I am not one of them. This feels like a major step up from the more conventional figures and while I wouldn't want these things to replace minifigures, it would be welcome to see more electronic figures like lego Mario, especially in videogame based themes.customers who have yet to buy this may ignore it entirely, thinking the set to be overpriced, and while I initially thought that too, don't let the price/piece ratio cloud your judgement; the interchangeable ways that the set can be reorganised open the door for several possibilities without even buying the other sets.Overall this is an incredible set, despite what other reviewers may have stated this set can provide hours of fun for people of all ages, I ran the batteries out within a matter of days, regret nothing and look forward to expanding this set, especially with Bowser's castle.(Also Lego Mario does not work as bluetooth speaker, believe me I tried)
