Let’s start with the good. This set is very sleek and expertly captures the iconic looks of the A Wing. The liberal use of smooth tiles and pieces really elevates it from a toy to a collectors display piece. Additionally, the designers have implemented many creative building techniques to help create the wedge shape. The build difficulty is pretty standard (compared to other UCS sets) imo but I also have been playing with Lego for almost 20 years so your experience might be different. Now let’s move to not quite the bad just the mildly inconveniencing bits. Due to the complex shape of the A-Wing, the connections between the various chunks feels a bit wobbly. As a result, the overall build doesn’t feel quite as rigid as something like the UCS Y-Wing. Ultimately this is a bit nitpicky since it’s meant more as a display piece rather than a play piece. Another bit that’s mildly frustrating is the cockpit canopy piece, which isn’t printed, and instead requires 3 thin stickers to be applied and lined up correctly. It’s probably the most challenging part of the build. The problem with stickers is they’ll eventually lose their stickiness, dry up, and then crack (it’s happened to all of my older Lego sets), so I wish Lego had printed the larger pieces instead of relying on stickers. Finally, the ugly. It’s no secret that Lego prices have gone up over the years and it’s only going to get more expensive. I personally feel that this set is a little overpriced (but it probably would have felt less overpriced if they used fewer stickers and more printing), which is a shame because it’s a really good set that should be in the hands of more people. Maybe there’s a good reason for the pricing but I just feel like the price-to-fun ratio isn’t where it used to be.Here’s the bottom line, if you have the money, and you’re a Star Wars fan or just a fan of interesting Lego builds, this will make a nice addition to your collection.

Firstly, I was super hyped for this set. The A-Wing has long been one of my favourite starfighters from the Star Wars franchise and this is a stunning display set. It does look good, and sits nicely on the stand in a very nice display angle. But...This is my third Lego Star Wars UCS set, having built the Y-Wing and D-O, and have to say it is the third in ranking too. I do like this kit but it has flaws. The Flaws:1. For a UCS kit, detail is paramount, and the only thing that has superb detail is the pilot seat. Truely one of the finest seats I have made for any kit.2. There is no landing gear. All of the play A-Wings have landing gear, but not this one. Disappointing3. Having cut my teeth on the UCS Y-Wing, the A-Wing's build is overall very flimsy feeling and the whole thing feels like if slightly over handled bits will fall off.4. The cockpit doesn't open. No hinge for access. I do however like the clarity of the cockpit canopy, however, there isn't much to see in the cockpit aside from the fantastic seat.5. I read the manual, and understand the scaling choice, but still it would have been nice if it was in a scale that was in keeping with other UCS kits, or going forward, If Lego could do a scale series, so that they all fit a minifigure in proportionally accurate across the series.6. Where's the missile launcher? Mentioned on the details, but not present in the detailling on the build.7. It is a big set, for the smallest rebel fighter, this is a crazy size. I can't help imagine what it would be like if the Y-Wing or a B-Wing were made to this scale. Heck, if the Millenium Falcon was to the same scale, I could probably use it as a transport. Finally, this is still something I am glad I purchased, I just felt it didn't quite hit the mark overall. Also, I like to take my time building, so if anyone queries the time taken, I am deliberately slow so I can make my Lego sets last as long as I can whilst building them.

This is the most disappointing lego set I've ever built. It's just bad design. I have several of the Star Wars Collector series sets, and I've loved them all, until the A-Wing. I'm often impressed with the clever and ingenius designs that the lego designers come up with, which is surely a difficult task.I was excited to build this set, but even as I started the first couple bags, I could easily see that there were far better ways to build it. There are multiple major sections of the ship that are held on by 2 small points, which leaves it feeling extremely fragile (and it is). Outside of the main, front, center section, most of the ship is not reinforced well. I do not play with my sets, but even if I did, I would not play with this set.My biggest pet peeve with ... MoreThis is the most disappointing lego set I've ever built. It's just bad design. I do not play with my sets, but even if I did, I would not play with this set.My biggest pet peeve with lego building is when designers put something together using a single dot with no reinforcement. This set does this in multiple places.Generally while I'm building I'll come across instructions that don't seem to make sense, because it's so flimsy, and then after several more steps you can see that it was made that way to hold it in place until it can be reinforced later, and the reinforcement becomes very satisfying. I really didn't have any satisfaction with this set.Giving 2 stars because it does look pretty good on the outside. The inside is designed very poorly. In case someone sees this review and reaches out telling me to check to make sure I didn't miss a step or something - I've already done that. I was really, really hoping that I missed a step. But I didn't.For the first time as a lego fan through my entire life, I will say that from now on, I will check the designer of a set before I buy it. I won't buy a set designed by the same person again.

Finally we get a new UCS and not a redesign!
19 October 2020

First off, this model is absolutely gorgeous. The designers really captured the sleekness and the curves that the A-Wing has compared to the angular designs of most other Star Wars ships. It's also very sturdy. When I handle the model, I'm not worried about random parts falling off that has seemed to be an issue with the past UCS models (I'm looking at you Snow Speeder and Slave 1).Next, price: $200 seems to be the minimum standard for UCS sets. I know a lot of people's first complaints were that the set didn't really hit the expected of $0.10/per piece ratio. The model doesn't have many large molds on it minus the engines, so a set being less than 2000 pieces for that price caused some grumbling.I did some research on the past few UCS sets. The model doesn't have many large molds on it minus the engines, so a set being less than 2000 pieces for that price caused some grumbling.I did some research on the past few UCS sets. Over the last few years, it looks like the only ones to reach that part to price ratio was the Y-Wing, Slave 1 and Sandcrawler. That being said, the price seems fair.Build- I found this build fairly easy and not super engaging. It still took me probably close to 8 hours, but I built it over a period of a few days while watching TV. There weren't any building techniques that blew me away, so it was pretty straight forward. Compared to the complexity and challenge of the Mustang set, it was a little bit of a letdown. My largest complaint with the build design is probably the small gap where the end of the cockpit hits the nose of the ship. Since the parts sit at an angle, it's not all that surprising, but it's still noticeable.Biggest Gripe- It has to be the cockpit sticker. Especially with the lower part count, the lack of a printed cockpit is a huge letdown. The set didn't have a lot of stickers, which is a relief, but the multiple cockpit stickers are just awful. I got the placement of one slightly off and had to peel off and reapply both of the lower stickers. It looks okay now, but considering the nose stickers on my UCS Y-Wing are already peeling, I don't have high hopes that they will last.Overall- Beautiful display piece. Not my favorite UCS build, but probably one of the most ascetically pleasing in the collection behind the Slave 1. I'd encourage people to buy this set just on the principal that Lego will continue to design new UCS models instead of re-design/re-releasing fan favorites.

Let's start with the negatives, as unfortunately there are a few major flaws with this model.1) If you were scrolling through the images of this set, and wondered why there are no shots of the A-Wing's underbelly... Well, it's because there is no detailing on the underside of this model; at least, not in the central red portion. As a part of the interview with Hans Burkhard Schlömer (the model designer) included in the instruction manual for this set, he states: "Brick count doesn’t really matter – only making the best model possible does." I am a huge fan of Hans and his fantastic portfolio of phenomenal Lego sets, but I must admit that sadly the underside of this model does not match with this statement. The front angled portion of this problem is so easy to fix ... MoreLet's start with the negatives, as unfortunately there are a few major flaws with this model.1) If you were scrolling through the images of this set, and wondered why there are no shots of the A-Wing's underbelly... The front angled portion of this problem is so easy to fix just by replacing a couple of plates with tiles that it's more sad than frustrating that Lego didn't bother. I am aware that this part of the ship is less important and that it's rarely visible in most circumstances, but that shouldn't matter for a premium Lego set at this price; no expense should be spared to make "the best model possible".2) This criticism marries in with the first, as it's a further issue with the ship's underbelly. There's no landing gear! It's actually incredibly embarrassing that the other current Lego A-Wing (75248, which can regularly be found for a 10th of the price of this set) manages to include this feature, yet it's somehow omitted from the UCS version...3) The cockpit is simply removed... as in, to access the cockpit, you take it off. From my (limited) understanding of A-Wing Starfighters, the cockpit should lift from a rear mounted hinge, or slide forward on tracks. The latter option would be admittedly impressive in Lego form, but surely the former is a reasonable ask, especially when the design team was clearly given free reign to design a new cockpit piece specifically for this role?4) All 4 rear fins are not fixed. Admittedly this doesn't affect the model's display appeal at all, but it is certainly a shortcoming, and it is frustrating as you need to correct them positionally after even the tiniest of knocks.5) The model is rather clearly out of proportion- the fins are too long, and the cockpit is too far forwards. A quick google image search makes that fairly clear.6) The remainder of my issues with the model itself are smaller gripes, so I'll list them as one point. The rear engines are quite tricky to attach, and I feel this could be done better. Fans spending this much on a set should not be applying fiddly stickers (and as other reviews point out Lego seems to be fairly inconsistent in terms of including a second set of stickers). The display stand sticker is inaccurate. The mini figure's facial expressions don't really match the kamikaze those of Arvel Crynyd's A-Wing pilot in Return of the Jedi. The rotating blaster's only rotated upwards, and the mechanism is very imperfect, as well as overcomplicated.7) Lastly, this model is overpriced at £179. For reference of this two years ago, the last easily comparable UCS set the 75181 Y-Wing with almost 300 pieces more, was priced at £169.99. That makes this model look a bit overpriced, but if you look at other non-Star Wars sets at the £179 mark currently on sale, then it starts to look silly; see pirate's bay or Assembly Square for example. In spite of all that I've listed, this model isn't a disaster at all, and there are many positives:1) There are some really fun building techniques used here to create the unique angles of the A-Wing, particularly the angled sides of the fighter. The technic frame used to create the angle of the craft's nose is also noteworthy.2) The stand itself (essentially the same as has been used previously for 75181 Y-Wing Starfighter and 75144 Snowspeeder) is still great, allowing for a banked position of display.3) The new cockpit piece is nicely shaped, in spite of any other criticisms, and it will be nice to see how it is used in MOCs.4) The box design (and all other artwork really) is stunning, for those who are into that kind of thing. This build is overall varied, and not too repetitive, and if you love relaxing and building Lego, then you don't need me to say that you'll love putting this together in spite of it's at times frustrating floors. The model looks lovely on display.

Fun build, EXTREMELY difficult
18 May 2020

The UCS A Wing is the hardest build I have ever built. I previously built the UCS Slave 1, UCS Tie Fighter, UCS 75181 Y Wing and even the very difficult UCS 10240 X Wing. The A Wing was on a completely different challenge level than the other UCS sets I've previously built, which makes sense for the first 18+ UCS set. If you want a big challenge, then this is the set for you.The one major criticism I give this set is there are STICKERS on the custom-made canopy. Why would Lego make a custom-made piece that still requires stickers? The canopy should have been made with the markings painted on, evading the need of stickers that eventually peel off. The UCS Tie Fighter and all other TIE Fighters receive custom prints for the windows and canopies that do not require ... MoreThe UCS A Wing is the hardest build I have ever built. However, the A Wing, as well as other UCS sets like the 10240 X Wing and the 75181 Y Wing still need stickers on their canopies, despite the canopies being custom made for the set.Since Lego requesting stickers on the custom canopy, I decided to not even put on the stickers on the canopy, which have the potential to peel off the build or look sloppy if placed on incorrectly.

Great Build, Some Flaws
18 May 2020

This was my first UCS set as I only recently really got into lego star wars, and boy was I impressed at how intuitive the build was and how much fun I had. While the build is not inherently challenging, if you are watching a show or not fully paying attention to the directions it can cause you to have to go back multiple steps to fix your issues. The same can be said for any lego set however, so if you find yourself pretty problem free on most larger builds I would say you should have no worries. There are a few aspects of the build I was not to fond of, such as the cockpit stickers. I feel as though since the cockpit piece was a new mold specificially for this model that they could have printed the lines. There are a few aspects of the build I was not to fond of, such as the cockpit stickers. I feel as though since the cockpit piece was a new mold specificially for this model that they could have printed the lines. It took me way longer than I thought to get all 3 stickers lined up in a way I felt comfortable displaying them. Not to mention in the instruction booklet it explains that extra sticker sheets will be included so you can have a practice run at putting the stickers on, yet my set (and I'm pretty sure all sets) did not include any extra sheets. While this doesn't actually bother me that much as I try to be careful with my stickers it is just a little annoying that they mention the extra sheet and don't even bother to include it. The stand is incredibly wobbly. I would definitely recommend putting this on a table or shelf that is stable (as in if bumped it wont shake or wobble) because if you so much as lightly tap a surface this is on the entire ship begins to shake back and forth. I wish they would have created more of a locking point or more of a stabilizing stand to minimize this for it being such an expensive set. This may be an unpopular opinion, but I honestly feel like it is slightly too large. Because the A-Wing is supposed to be the smallest ship in the universe it just feels really odd that it is the same size as my Venator star destroyer. I understand its a UCS model and needs to be large, but I personally would have been okay with a slightly smaller model just to make it feel less awkward. Now to get started with the biggest adherent flaw with this set. The whole part (for me at least) of the UCS moniker, the plaque (don't know what else to call it). It is so wrong, I'm not going to go into specifics because you can find multiple youtubers going in far detail about everything wrong. My biggest gripe is how wrong the sizing is stated. I just don't understand how it is so hard for them to just pull up a google search to find the dimensions of an A-WIng. The plaque lists it as being 9.6 meters long, when in reality (or I guess the fictional realm, but whatever) the longest A-Wing is only 7.68 meters. For this being a $200 UCS branded model, I just wish they would have taken the 2 seconds to fact check and not make me feel disappointed when ogling at my new big model.

Really accurate model!

A very good depiction of the A-wing fighter. This set was also my first time building a UCS set and my first return to lego after a long pause from it.The set has a lot of very fine details like the seat, the nice curving of the hull my the center front. And the stand is nice and sturdy at seemingly any angle. If there's anything I'd have to criticize it would have to be the stickers on the cockpit, I personally wet the stickers to allow myself some leeway to adjust them to get them nice and straight and aligned correctly on both sides. But I could easily see these stickers being something someone would remove and re-apply a few times to get it right. Which in turn would weaken the glue and cause them to peel later down the line. The second would be a nitpick ... MoreA very good depiction of the A-wing fighter. This set was also my first time building a UCS set and my first return to lego after a long pause from it.The set has a lot of very fine details like the seat, the nice curving of the hull my the center front. While really nicely detailed I would've wished his arms were printed.I know a friend who have the UCS snow speeder and it came with two rebel pilots with printed arms. Feels like that print could've been repurposed with white ink for this figures' arms. But I'm sure things are a lot more technical than that. It would've just been nice to see.

Well, there will be another set coming some time

I'm a little disappointed by this build. First off, the box came damaged. It was thrown in there with two other sets and loosely packed, but that is not a review of the build, just poor packing and good thing I’m not a box collector. Before it was released, it was said that there were going to be two sets of stickers, nope just one set on two sheets. It's a very flimsy build and I feel if I take it off the stand it's going to fall apart. The engine design sucks, it's hard to get it to fit correctly. The cockpit doesn't fit snugly, but the interior design of the cockpit is very nice. The cannons won't level out all the way, there's a slight upward angle. I appreciate the detail that went into it, but if I had to pay $199 again for it, no way, maybe $100. My ... MoreI'm a little disappointed by this build. First off, the box came damaged. My favorite part of the entire set is the mini figure. I'd give it 4 of 10, not too impressed. I bought this the same time I bought the Tantive IV 75244, and that one was a much better build. This build makes me hesitant to spend that much money again on another UCS set. Maybe if the UCS Republic Gunship redeems my trust, I’ll be able to convince my wife to let me keep buying them. Now if only Lego would do a Republic Dropship with an AT-OT or even an AT-AE again...

Worth every penny

One of my earliest memories is building lego houses with my dad, we would try to build the tallest houses we could and I remember them getting huge! Now that I’m a parent and my kids are old enough (4 & 6) I picked up the hobby again. Both of my kids helped me out with this one over the course of a few days. I just finished it and can’t wait to show them in the AM when they wake up. This is definitely the most detailed and difficult lego set I’ve ever built but don’t get nervous, directions are great, just take it slow. There were a handful of mistakes along the way but I backtracked and fixed them. The stickers aren’t bad although if your hands tremble it could be difficult. I got them all on perfect except the last one for the stand - so upset it’s just a little ... MoreOne of my earliest memories is building lego houses with my dad, we would try to build the tallest houses we could and I remember them getting huge! The engine portion is a little bit unstable if you’re going to play with it, actually the only thing my son kept breaking. Last is a glossy finish for the name plate, I wasn’t able to peel that sticker off and even up because it is like a matte finish. Sticker got on there very well and would probably rip trying to peel off.Huge thank you to my wife and kids for getting this for me for Christmas! Looking forward to the next big build!
