Annoying to build and underwhelming

I'm a big fan of chess, and when I saw this I had to get it. It ended up being quite annoying and repetitive to build to the point where I just didn't want to finish building it for a month. It doesn't look very good in my opinion. It's difficult to tell pieces apart at first glance. Its not good as a decoration, and actually playing chess on it is difficult as the pieces don't stay on the board. The upside is that there is a place to store pieces inside the board, but even that is imperfect. You have to pry the baseplates off of the top of the board to access the inside, and putting them back on requires pressing hard. Overall, I regret my purchase.

Extra queen pieces (one for each color) for pawn promotions (quite a common occurrence during chess matches) would have been greatly appreciated. Also, I was kind of hoping to get extra pieces of the brick with horizontal snap (Element #4211087) as it does protrude and is in danger of snapping off when the chess board is separated for storage/transport.Overall, it is a good buy - both for play, display, and reusing the parts for my MOC tray.

If you think this can actually be used to play chess, it cannot. It would also be extremely hard to display this set if you did not want to use it to play chess. The game pieces DO NOT SIT ON THE BOARD WITHOUT CONSTANTLY FALLING OVER. I also had two pieces missing with this set. They put two wrong pieces in the bags instead of the two correct pieces that should have been included. These pieces are way too top heavy and heavy in general to sit on a very small peg on the board. I'm going to have to totally re-create my own game pieces in order to play chess with my family. Pain in the behind. Wish I had not wasted my time and money on this.

Excellent Product!!

I bought this set a week ago, it took me 2 hours to put all the pieces together. Although the pieces can fall over very easily as long as you press them down tightly it works out, it was also really cool that it doesn’t take up that much storage. I would recommend this product to people who are learning to play chess as the booklet shows you what moves each piece can make.

Fun Build, but Could Use a Few Tweaks

I enjoyed the build overall. It’s fun, and intricate. Nifty to have a chess and checker set that I got to build out of LEGO. Just adds to the fun. Like many others have said, the single pegs to place pieces on aren’t a sturdy base so if you plan to use this as a display piece, I’d recommend changing out your center tiles to flat four by four studs for a more solid display. If you’re playing, you’re probably going to want to keep the single studs for easier movement though. I feel like the Bishops look like flowers, but I loved the ears on the Knights and thought the Rooks were cute. If you knock the pieces over make sure you press them firmly back together or they may come apart. The pegs sticking out when you stack it isn’t my favorite, so I plan to make a mod at some point in the future. I get that the main focal point of this set is the chess pieces, but I honestly HATE the checker pieces. They’re small, they’re short, and there aren’t enough of them. The set comes with exactly 12 of each color and they are two by two round flat tiles with two by two round flat smooths to go on top. Now imagine playing checkers with these. It’s hard to pick them up and move them and frankly I plan to change them out for something easier to play with later that I will have the option of having spare to “king” with. Despite the flaw in the checker part, I still really enjoy the set.

Functional Chess Set for Lego Fans

The build experience is naturally repetitive; having to put together 2 sets of the same pieces just in different colors isn't a ton of fun but it was still a neat process to see how they would form the piece shapes and of course knowing that I would have a full chess set at the end.Being able to store both the chess and checkers pieces inside the board is awesome, as is the ability to quickly break it down. However I have a few minor gripes which while not detrimental are things to keep in mind and overall I still recommend this set especially if you don't already have a chess set in your home and are a lego fan.1. Places the pieces on a single stud works - for the most part. Not as easily being able to knock the pieces of the board is a plus, but it would make doing timed chess matches annoying if you're in to that.2. While figuring out how to get the pieces into the compartments isn't particularly difficult, it does require a bit of puzzle solving. I also would have appreciate some blocks in there to help organize the pieces.3. I wish there was a proper place to store the green studs used to stack the two halves of the board on top of each other. You can put them inside the board while playing but I really would have preferred a dedicated spot for them to go.

Lego that can be played with in 2 ways!
3 February 2022

The set is exactly what you think it is. It has brick built chess pieces and checkers. It is expectantly exhausting to build with steps that are extremely repetitive. While this wasn’t a surprise the set has amazing play value, especially being a classic board game, they didn’t have to include chess pieces I could have gotten a non-lego chess set for cheaper sure but the set is amazing to play with and looks just as good! I would recommend buying this product and definitely let the kids help with this one.

My favorite set ever!
26 June 2023

Once my son found this set, he really wanted it. So we bought it for him for passing 2nd grade. It took him 3 to 4 hours to finish. After that, he played a game with his dad, and his dad won. The kings and queens were a little wobbly, and it is good to play with. He didn't know how to play checkers, so he didn't use them. The 65$ price is very underrated. For a 1450-piece set, it is his favorite set currently.

Super Satisfying Build!
30 July 2018

This was my very first actual LEGO project, and I must say, it was VERY satisfying to complete.I think LEGO builds are pretty, and while I’m not huge into LEGO, and a lot of projects don’t appeal to me because they seem like a lot of work for something to just look at, but this project appealed to me way more because I love chess, and once I’ve built it, I have a fully functioning chess board that looks awesome. I am very satisfied with this build. It is very aesthetically pleasing. The board (especially the base with its pretty patterns) looks amazing, and the pieces look awesome with their themes. I am very satisfied with this build. It is very aesthetically pleasing. The board (especially the base with its pretty patterns) looks amazing, and the pieces look awesome with their themes. I think just seeing one of my favorite board games in LEGO form was just awesome in it of itself. All together, once the pieces are on the board, it truly is a piece of art, and it looks beautiful. I only have two minor complaints about how it looks, the first being that the flat pieces on the board (the pieces making up he checkerboard especially) do tend to get very visible fingerprints on them, but this isn’t a big deal as you can remove them pretty easily. The second small gripe I have is he rooks in the set have tan bricks connecting it, and it does stand out from the theme. I personally don’t mind all that much, but this is not OCD friendly.I do realize this project isn’t all about playability, but since this project was clearly designed with playability in mind, I do think this is fair to review. The pieces sit in the nubs of the checkerboard. They are harder to move by bumping, yet they remain easy to lift from the board, at least physically lifting them. Lifting pieces surrounded by other pieces, however, is more of a challenge. I actually don’t mind this all that much, because I am used to smaller chess sets where there is little room between each piece, but I can see where for a lot of people, this can be a problem. The pieces themselves are very easy to identify in game. Unlike LEGO chess sets with minifigs, the pieces actually do look like chess pieces, so it is just as easy to tell what’s what as an actual chess set. The fact that the board comes with built-in storage is awesome, but it is not practical in the slightest. I realize it’s not really supposed to be, but it is inconvenient trying to remove the sections of the checkerboard, and trying to stack the two halves is worse. The fact that you need four additional studs to stack them is actually pretty frustrating. But seeing as it is more of a work of art that also functions as a board game, it’s easy to get over this. The board also comes with checkers pieces, but these are not as playable. In fact, once kings join in the game, it’s basically unplayable. You either have to stack pieces loosely or remove some pieces just to stack them better, or put them on the board upside-down. I wasn’t more excited about he chess part however, so i didn’t mind.Next is the build. I gotta say, for a first build, as long as you can read the mostly-pictures instruction book and tell what needs to be done, it is pretty easy. People who are not good at reading these though will struggle, however, unless they are good st building without instruction at all. I labeled the difficulty as “Easy” because with decent visual-learning abilities, this is VERY easy (not to mention everything is symmetrical, so you can build a lot of this without instruction anyway), but because there are lots of chess pieces to build, it can get a little repetitive. The checkerboard is actually pretty tedious. This makes it more satisfying to complete, however, so I didn’t mind at all.Overall, I highly recommend this product if you like chess and LEGO. The deal is amazing. You get a lot for your money compared to other LEGO projects. Overall I give it a 4/5. It is a beautiful chess set on a beautiful board, and while it isn’t exactly practical to have a serious chess session on, it actually does have some nice things about its playability that most chess sets do not have. I got it on sale for $45, and money well spent in my opinion.

1. Aweful as an actual chess set. The pieces knock loose so easily and you know them over because they are insanely over sized for the square size. It’s actually comical looking. The rooks touch when they are next to each other lol! (I understand we buy Lego for more reasons than function or play)2. It looks like it was designed in 1988, just look closely at the pawn in the photo. It’s so much worse in person. The board is just a block, no gram around the playing area. Loon at the instructions towards the end where it shows you how to put the pieces away and stack the board halves. It uses 4 green dots to connect them which you would then remove every time you set it up.3. I’m writing this as we play our first game on it…and our last. It’s not even nice enough to ... More1.
