All-inclusive set, great addition to a city

First off, note that this set that the set includes everything you need to have a working, powered train running around your child's city (or a portion of it, depending on how big it is). Yes, it's expensive when you just look at the piece count, but the powered up parts alone (hub, motor, controller, and light) would cost almost $100 if purchased separately. Plus it's got all those tracks. Yes, they could have charged half as much and then had you buy the extras piecemeal - but there are other sets that offer that option. I personally think this is a nice way to get the whole package in one nice set.As for the build experience, it's definitely something well within the listed age range, although I think older kids will have fun with it too due to the powered ... MoreFirst off, note that this set that the set includes everything you need to have a working, powered train running around your child's city (or a portion of it, depending on how big it is). I won't ever get enough LEGO trains. Aesthetically, this one is probably the best so far. A huge improvement when we are taking a look at the sides of the wagons, for there are DOORS! Finally, our minifigs can board the train. I really like the long pointed nose of the train, for this train really is a TGV, "Train Haute Vitesse" in French. The TGV can travel to a speed of over 200mph on straight tracks, which explains the need for a long pointed aerodynamic nose. While I am not really a fan of the new app with nowadays motorized systems in LEGO sets, this app is way more functional and simpler than its previous version. Easy to assemble but requires plenty of batteries
9 August 2022

My 7 year old son is really into Legos and I knew he’d love this train set. To my surprise, he was able to actually put it together by himself except for a little help on a couple of the steps. He worked on it for a couple of days on and off so I can’t really say how long it took him total. This train requires 10 AAA batteries (not included). My son in law mentioned it may be a good idea to purchase rechargeable batteries for this which is a great idea. I honestly had no idea where the batteries even went, the directions didn’t say and nothing on the box mentioned it. We eventually realized where they went and you will need a small screwdriver to install them. The lights on the train can be adjusted (dim-bright). It’s actually pretty quiet and not extremely loud. ... MoreMy 7 year old son is really into Legos and I knew he’d love this train set. Because of the speed of the train, the track does move & slide a little on my hardwood floors. The remote in my opinion is somewhat difficult to figure out. Also, the remote doesn’t automatically shut itself off, another reason I deducted a star. My son left it on for an hour or so before noticing. My son said that you need to hold down the green button and it will blink before shutting itself off.I was quite surprised at how fast this train moves. I would definitely recommend purchasing more track for it because it does get somewhat boring watching it go around in a oval.I think I expected more with this train set. It does include some accessories. My honest opinion is although this is fun to build & play with, it’s not worth the asking price of $189 (at the time of this review).

Fun Lego, but expensive
9 August 2022

The list prices for this Lego is $189. My son built it out in a few hours over two days. That is a major consideration. You are getting reuse because you can set up the train as part of larger displays, especially if you get more tracks. But ultimately you are spending close to 200$ on a 700 piece Lego that was not a challenging build. The Lego itself is very cool. The LED lights are bright. The remote works quite well. The train goes pretty fast. We did not use the APP but you can, we stuck to the remote and it is fun to operate. You get some tracks for a small circle and you get some nice mini figs. We enjoyed how the instructions have added what looks like a progress bar in the instruction book to see how far you are along, that was a nice touch. But for this amount of money, the build was not very complicated and not a lot of pieces. At this price we would rather do a more complicated Architecture build of a landmark. This is a very fun cool Lego, but just very expensive. We understand in general Lego is not a cheap hobby and even small Lego sets are very expensive, however, my son enjoys more complex builds and while this train is quite fun, it was a bit too easy.

Fun and Easy

This is our first Lego train set and our first lego anything that is battery powered (and wow does it take a lot of batteries). My 5 year old is really getting into Lego and since I never grew up with proper sets (just hand me down bins of them), we are experiencing the fun and satisfaction of building different sets. This one was a a bit of a different experience than some of the sets we have built, as there wasn't as much building to do. Since the set it aimed for 7+, I did a good portion of the building while he helped find pieces and interpret the instructions. It was a quick build and he immensely enjoys the powered aspect of it (especially since our only other train toy has to be pushed by hand). Great exterior, questionable interior

Positives:-The overall length of the train is really impressive in person. It feels like you are getting a sizeable train. You get one engine and two passenger cars.-Of the passenger cars 3/4 of the space is actually useable passenger seating areas.-The minifigure selection is nice, and with non-gender specific torsos, you can swap and make a lot of combinations.-The removable battery compartment design and the extra button extension built on top of the power functions pack tickled me.-Except for cramming in the wiring for the power pack, the whole build experience was easy and despite having repetitive elements, didn't end up feeling repetitive.Negatives:-While having one passenger car be wheelchair accessible is neat in theory, the drop off down into the car after ... MorePositives:-The overall length of the train is really impressive in person. In fact both cars could use an extra two plates of height inside to raise the floor. There are also gaps in the bottom of each car where small pieces from the inside could fall down and land in the wheels. I'm not going to say you'll derail your train, but it does break the immersion/realism.-With no suggestion of stairs inside either car, it looks silly, and you would have to imagine your minifigures doing a pull up to get to the snack counter or seating areas.-You get less track and a lot less play experience than the Freight Train which is also available at a similar price.-The inclusion of headlights is nice, but it leaves a bundle of wire visible inside the engine car. You'll see them behind your engineer who only has enough space to sit.Overall:If you are just seeking a Lego Train, I'd go with the Freight Train set. That is an easy recommendation over this one. I would only recommend this set if you really want a Passenger Train and have the cash to burn. Though, once it is built, and if you can ignore the interior issues or use your own pieces to improve them, it is, overall, a nice looking train.

The box for this Lego City train set is quite large, but it only has 764 pieces, and the age rating is 7+. There are a lot of large pieces, and the design is not complex. Completed, it’s a cool design and of an impressive size. This set comes with 6 minifigs in the traditional Lego style as opposed to what you might see in the Lego Friends line. This seems like it could be at home mixed with the Lego Friends line, though. The minifigs have a good amount of diversity as far as gender goes, and there’s even a wheelchair, which is cool.I have no previous experience with Lego train sets, so I don’t know how this might be different than previous ones. I also don’t have any previous experience with Lego sets that involve powered elements. In fact, I didn’t grow up with Legos at all. I’ve only been getting sets as my daughter has gotten interested in building things. To me, this is a very indulgent set. There’s not that much building, so it’s pretty easy to put together. While it looks cool, I would think that you’d have to really be into Lego trains or just have money to burn to want to spend $190 on a train that goes around a track. Granted, if you’re really into the Lego hobby, you might already have tracks that you could add to this to make the run a lot more interesting than just going around in an oval. So, as far as recommending this, I think it depends on what you want out of your Legos. I think there is a segment of the population that is really into Legos, so they likely already know that they would or would not buy this set, and I don’t think any review is going to affect that beyond a really well-informed review from someone with Lego train experience if there are specific details you’re concerned about or want to know how this is different from previous sets or whether you should get this train or a different train if you can’t afford to get all of the trains. If your budget is limited and you just want to get a cool set to put together, this might not be for you. If the part you like is the challenge of a large build, this isn’t going to really do it. This set is more about building a story. So while this set is cool, I think it’s best for kids that just want to play around with a train that will move around a track or adults who have a display and could use these elements to fill it out. In addition, even for Lego, this set is expensive for the piece count, so I imagine a lot of the value comes from the train actually moving around the track. If you’re not really that interested in that part of this set, I don’t think you’ll get your money’s worth. And something definitely worth considering is that this requires 10 AAA batteries (not included). You’re probably going to want to invest in some rechargeables for this.

My first ever Lego train set

It took 40 years but I bought my first Lego train and WOW I caught a bug and bought the Fright set as well. My only gripe with Lego with this set is not enough decals. And the decal stickers supplied are 'first time, best use' meaning you need to be spot of lining these stickers up because if you peel it back to fix it they instantly go from clear to cloudy. Honestly printing them on would have been better. But aside from that what a NOICE set! Excellent quality Lego plastics, no mould defects, perfect straight lines. Wow!

I ordered this Lego train set, not sure who would want to build it. I have 2 kids in their early 20's - one in college, the other one who just started his first full time job. Then there's my husband and me, both in our mid 50's. It sat around for over a week without being touched. Then one Saturday night, my husband asked me if I would like to build it with him. I've never been much of a Lego builder. Both kids were and my husband was when he was a kid. I think my brother used to have some and I would build houses with them. Well, it took 2 nights to complete it, but we successfully built this train set. Wow! This is quite the Lego set! The instructions were easy to follow, as we expected with Lego. My husband, who is a tech guy and loves all things nerdy/geeky really enjoyed playing with this train. It works really well. You can control and adjust the speed. We did learn that if you go at maximum speed, it jumps the track. There are working headlights. It's really a cool set! We had a lot of fun with it. We're still having fun with it because it's still set up on the table.
