I bought Ninjago city for myself to build (though the kids helped quite a bit), and figured when I was done it would make a great set to play with for the kids. After the build I am even more impressed than before, the excruciating details in every room are so unappreciated with the set all together. The kids have truly enjoyed playing with the set and it holds up pretty well from a playability aspect. My only issue now is I want more Ninjago modulars. Something like a Ninjago downtown skyscraper or city center. Since the Ninjago city doesn't pair up well next to the other modulars it needs a companion piece!

The poster was a nice and the tea pot is a great piece! The little bay in back was nicely detailed, with darker pieces under the water pieces to add depth. The elavator only needs a bit of pressure to make it go up and down. The details on the first floor give it that ancient look.Second floor:First off, I’d like to point out the film poster display and how it references other LEGO stuff like the shadow of ronin LEGO game, the old and unpopular galidor theme, and the return of the brick separator poster. The comic shop has references to many other LEGO themes such as the “believe poster” from the LEGO movie. And the comic books. The ATM is really clever and the crab cooker is like magic! The old construction site had a nice but delicate cherry blossom tree. (Incorrectly called a Bonsai tree) the fashion shop is very nice with the new colored LEGO pieces.Third floor:The sushi place has a nice shape and little bathroom in it. I never got why it didn’t include the owner of the sushi place and included a chef’s hat and a moustache underneath it, was i supposed to take his brother (the crab cooker guy) and also use him as the shushi guy? That doesn’t make sense. Anyway. The sushi conveyor belt is clever. But, the pufferfish balloon was, in the movie, a floating resteraunt. Misako and Lloyd’s apartment was a bit too small but it utilized space nicely.Minifigures: were great except for the exclusion of the sushi shop owner, the fact that Misako didn’t have the right clothing on, and Ivy Walker’s minifigure had the wrong face and needed a fabric skirt instead of a printed one.But overall, I would recommend this whole heartedly!

I had seen a bunch of reviews of this set and it looked amazing. When I started building it, I was not disappointing. Although the technically has 3 levels, you could argue it has five with the tea room and apartment as part of the first level and the tree and store counting as their own level. Although parts of it felt a little repetitive, it's a great set to build with friends if you don't want to keep doing similar things, but don't want to miss out on any of the cool building techniques.I'm not a super advanced builder (my biggest set before this was the 2010 hogwarts which had around 1500 pieces) and it wasn't too difficult to build. One of my friends isn't even a big Lego fan, and she was fascinated with how the set was built. It was her first complex lego set and even she got through it with minimal trouble. My only complaints are pretty minor. Some of the areas are very small and hard to pose (let alone play with) figures in, I wish the set had included more of the main Ninjas, and my only real complaint: that the little elevator doesn't have any mechanism to raise or lower it.Overall, this is an amazing set. I wouldn't recommend this for any super young builders, but if you're an older collector (or even a younger collector) who really likes huge display pieces that still have detailed interiors, this set is for you.

Beautiful but not for play

Ninjago City is a beautiful tower to look at and an enjoyable build, but it fails for play - especially when compared to my other sets. It's for looking, not for touching.Beauty: Truly stunning, the colors are fantastic. Really engaging to look at and explore. Well thought out.Build: More of an enjoyable grind than a challenge. Very intricate, sometimes too much: In some cases I put 8 to 12 pieces together for something that ultimately ends up buried under the floor or behind a wall. Worthwhile experience though, super fun to watch it come together. Lots of extra parts, added some confusion.Play: Horrible. Almost no good aspects here. Parts worked poorly, rooms too small, issues with figures, modules clunky. Also, for it's size, the back has very little to interact with. It's basically single sided.Parts: The rear elevator didn't work well and risks tearing the modules apart. Using the elevator knocks the menu out of the sushi restaurant. The cleaning robot doesn't fit in its space and falls apart when touched. It can't fit out it's door as designed.Rooms: Most of the lower level rooms don't fit the figures that live there. When the city is fully assembled the lower rooms are nearly impossible to interact with. This is the first set I've ever bought where I can't play with the final design - I have to break up the modules to use the rooms - and even then many of them are too small to fit their figures meaningfully. The comic book store's door needed to be reversed to function.Modules: When handling modules it's easy to knock other tiny parts off and lose them or lose track of where they came from. Excessive handling adds risk to play, in small hands these pieces could shatter.Figures: Probably the least satisfying element. Hats constantly fall off and barely fit through doors and spaces. Hair falls off the women. The cleaning robot falls apart, doesn't fit, is hard to put back and can't get through it's door. The frog falls out of the backpack and putting it back knocks the figure's hat off. Placing figures in rooms can cause these issues and then the rooms are so small retrieving the dropped items becomes a chore. Because of space constraints it's hard to maneuver the figures around the set. Items frequently carried by figures end up getting in the way: the umbrella, hats, sticks, food, tools, weapons, etc.Such a shame here, really. It's a fantastic experience but now that it's together if I can't safely move the figures around the city with my daughter what's the fun in owning it?

Best Set I've Built

This set is just all around fantastic. There are a lot of unique bricks to help add to the sheer awesomeness of this monster build. This 3 leveled set (a total of 5 levels really) is good for any fan of Ninjago or just Lego's in general. This was honestly my first Ninjago set excluding Lego Dimensions and I'm very happy I purchased it!For those of you who, like me, keep mulling it over to buy this or not, just do it. The pictures, although good, do not do justice to this beautiful build. The intricacies and details still continue to impress me well after this set has been completed. Now I'm no fan of stickers honestly, and when I opened up the box to find 56 stickers, I was a little saddened. However, all of the stickers are used effectively and look really good. ... MoreThis set is just all around fantastic. FIZZING WITH FUN DETAILS!
26 August 2017

I don't know much about Ninjago, though the film looks fun, but I just loved the look of this set. So much thought has gone into the store telling. A stack of 4 different city scenes, each worthy of a set on it's own. The level of detail is astounding. The front is beautiful, covered in quirky and cute little details, signage and neon elements giving the set a real crazy Tokyo City feel. The back of the set has also been thoroughly thought out, the AC vents, waste pipe, the sprout from the blossom trees that's grown through the building, really stunning design. Really clever use of bricks. I particularly like the black pan tiles. I also love the way the layers of the set show how a city evolves, the old town by the waters edge all the way up to the modern communications tower bristling with aerials and gizmos. Oh and I nearly forgot, a fully working Sushi conveyor restaurant on the roof top and crab grill on the first floor. The crabs turn out perfect each time. What's not to love? Everything about this set makes me smile. Pay attention though, I've ended up with what looks like way too many spare parts and some elements need stickers applied after the bricks are in place to make sure they sit the correct way. I got those wrong. Two sheets of stickers which I am not a fan of, but the graphic design of those alone is fantastic. Really adds another level of story telling to the set. Love it love it love it!

NINJAGO City is Incredible
16 October 2017

Never in my life could I have predicted that I would have the money to purchase a set of this caliber, but I got enough for my birthday, and I decided to spend it on the NINJAGO City. The build? ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE! Final result? ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE!! This building is so incredibly detailed, with so many little and big details, and yet there is still enough room for play, as well as play functions. There are so many positives that I have with this set, so I'll try to condense it:POSITIVES:-So many different colors and buildings, the three main levels are all different, yet they fit perfectly-The play functions are great, such as the ATM, sushi bar and the crab cooker. The elevator is cool, but it's very stiff, so be warned, and it's manual.-The detail is ... MoreNever in my life could I have predicted that I would have the money to purchase a set of this caliber, but I got enough for my birthday, and I decided to spend it on the NINJAGO City. The elevator is cool, but it's very stiff, so be warned, and it's manual.-The detail is off the charts, everything from the water effect on the bottom to the tree growing out of the apartment on the top are all incredibly well done. The modules are greatly detailed on the inside as well, and I do mean EVERY one of them.-The minifigure selection is superb, you get so many new prints, minifigures, and useful hairpieces and torsos for any city builds you may have.-For 300 bucks, you get almost 5000 pieces, and it's a fantastic assortment of new pieces and new colored pieces, it's TOTALLY worth itNEGATIVES:-There are almost 60 stickers with this build, and a lot of them are incredibly hard to put on perfectly, so they were the only frustrating part of the build for me.-As I said, the elevator is stiffI know, I've gone on too long about this set, but this is truly one of the greatest sets LEGO has ever released, and the best set I've ever gotten. I highly, HIGHLY recommend!

One of the best sets out there!
24 July 2018

First off - let me tell you that this is one of the best lego sets of all time. If you are stuck between this set and another one, I would strongly suggest picking this beauty up before anything else. There are so many cool features, such as the elevator, the different building techniques, as well as the various colours included in this set.I am not big on playing with my Lego builds, as I mostly display them, although there are plenty of great play features as well, including the little boat, the spinning conveyor belt at the very top of the building, and the various minifigures that are included in this set.My favourite part of this build is the lower level of the city, which gives off this "grime-y" feel, with swampy green waters and worn down walkways that ... MoreFirst off - let me tell you that this is one of the best lego sets of all time. Simply Stunning!
30 December 2017

After nearly 100,000 pieces in countless kits over many years, this is the first time I have felt compelled to write a review. Ninjago City is - by far - my favorite Lego set ever.I can only reiterate the set's positive attributes ascountless others have already shared:-the piece count represents excellent value and amazing detail and design creativity-the variety of colors and new pieces-the fresh and unique design (all the modular buildings are still fun, but offer few surprises or 'wow' moments any more)-the play factor (as 100% confirmed by my daughter)-the lack of repetitive build components-an amazing amount of cool features that work so well (crab BBQ, working ATM, changeable posters, the tree, the fish sculptures, the water, the sushi bar, ... MoreAfter nearly 100,000 pieces in countless kits over many years, this is the first time I have felt compelled to write a review. If you are avoiding this kit because of its' connection to a movie, you are making a mistake.Worked at it slowly for 2-4 hours daily for five days - wanted to stretch it out further, but was simply too enjoyable not to keep going.

THIS SET IS AWESOME!!!

There's no way I would have been able to predict the sheer size of this set. I know you are given the measurements but until you see it you won't believe it! And for a set so big it's amazing that there are details everywhere! From the depth perception of the water to the bag at the check out stand (in the store)- Ninjago City has everything! It is literally a whole city in it self that can be enjoyed without needing to buy other LEGO town/city sets (the creator ones) to complete it. The colors are like no other; blue, green, red, yellow, black, light blue, even a little purple! I know Ninjago sets are usually one or two colors but this one is a rainbow! I'm a very big Ninjago fan myself and I love how there are so many references to the show. There are comics such as Starfarer (see episode 18; Child's Play), what I assume is a Garmadon spinner card, a Chima picture (such as the time Lloyd and Morro went there), a Shadow of the Ronin poster (the video game), and much more. By the time I was done building this set the 17 people it came with seemed to be a bonus! You get Lloyd and Kai (casual) along with Lloyd's mom (new face!), Mother doomsday (from the real show Ninjago), a ninja fan with a new green ninja shirt, along with 12 more characters, most with new outfits. This set was so much fun to build and even more fun to play with. It is an awesome addition to any Ninjago fan's collection, or any LEGO fan's collection. Definitely worth it!
