I have to admit that I have a love hate relationship with Techic kits. I love them for the challenge they present and hate them for all the little tiny pieces that they have. The McLaren Formula Race Car is no exception. It is truly fun to build and amazing to watch as the pieces come together to make up the car as you go. The engineering on this is outstanding as everything fit and worked! A real challenge to put it together correctly and I like that. But….all those small tiny pieces drive me crazy….every time I open the next bag I gulp as I sort through them. As I said…a love hate relationship! If you enjoy a challenging build experience with really cool looking well designed model at the end, then I would recommend this to you. If working with small pieces ... First time I've touched Lego in 40 years and it's very different from back then. This is definitely a positive review but I'll start with the things I wasn't too pleased about...The instructions weren't as clear as they could have been in some parts. At times the same angle was shown three times in a row when you really needed to see it from the other side.A couple of pieces just fell off while turning it around, a prime example is the tail light assembly, that should have just been the last step.I never figured out why but the rear differential stopped working after I put the tyres on, I never got to the bottom of it after 3 attempts but I didn't know it was going to work like that until halfway through the build anyway. The pistons in the engine still move ... The pistons in the engine still move as expected so it doesn't matter.I had to take a little of it apart a couple of times (nothing major) because the instructions weren't too clear, and, admittedly, a couple of times because I rushed it a bit too much.I'm not a big fan of putting stickers on things but I know some people enjoy it. The instructions could have been a bit clearer for the steering wheel though, I just guessed because I didn't know what part of the car it was and put them on sideways. Doh! Personally I would rather the stickers were already on but that's just me.I really don't like the wheel covers protruding beyond the tyres, they look good side on but from any other angle they look silly, would have been better if they only covered the wheel, I'll probably just take them off.And now onto the good stuff...I could not put this down, I had to force myself to leave it and go to bed at night. In total, including unboxing, seperating pieces, building, taking a few pieces apart and rebuilding I think it took about 22 hours but I am a complete beginner. It looks amazing (despite the wheel covers), the attention to detail is quite brilliant, I love the fact that the wing moves for DRS even though it doesn't look particularly realistic. It was amazing fun to build, I'm now torn on what to buy next, I fancied the Ferrari 488 GTE “AF Corse #51” but so many tiny stickers is really putting me off. Still plenty of others to choose from though. All in all this is a great model and good value at the price.

I am not an avid fan of F1, but I have watched some races in my lifetime. I started building with my sone who loves legos. I wanted something to challenge me and this was both challenging and fun.I only had one small issue. The back of the car there is a connection that cannot connect. There is a black piece that blocks the connection and if you remove it and connect it anyway, it looks weird. Fortunately, it connects fairly well otherwise. The back taillight piece also comes off rather easily. The steering for me was good. I did have to adjust it to align it properly, but that took wo minutes to fix.Anyway, I enjoy putting together the engine. Years ago, I actually rebuilt and engine, so that was the fun part.I love how it looks.
This is the second technic kit I have completed after the Ducati motorbike. I am new to these. For the most part this was enjoyable with easy to follow instructions but........ On occasions I found parts that should be in one bag in another (later) numbered bag. I also found 4 different parts completely missing which is VERY annoying when you are in mid build and have to stop. Lego were great both on phone and online to order missing pieces. They took a week to get here though. A couple of times I got completely confused as the instructions could have been clearer on which part to use and on one occasion I had to use grey parts when the instructions said to look for black ones. The final build is impressive. Yes the steering wheel is not straight when the front wheels are but not a big deal. The rear wheels do have an awful lot of excess lateral movement though which is not right. Again not an issue if just on display. I have ordered Titanic so hope I do not have similar issues magnified x 10.
A truly great set for any F1 fan and Lego fan. An absolute must for a fan of both! Plus it’s a great bonus that I support McLaren as well. Really does look good once complete and on display to make your friends jealous aha! The build was relatively simple for a technic set yet still enjoyable. Some interesting building techniques around the axels and suspension. Yes, it’s not 100% accurate to the 2022 F1 car which is slightly unfortunate but can quickly be overlooked. It is a little on the pricey side for the piece count but you have to remember there are a lot of licences in this set. My main criticism would be the tyres. Also, I know it’s repetitive but at this price point I would like to see more printed elements and less stickers. As the title suggests I really do hope this is the first of many F1 sets to come and even more an entire F1 theme (speed champion scale/style) with all teams etc, trucks, Pits… (wink wink Lego). An all round great addition to the technic lineup.
*****TLDR:***** Is it a 100% perfect-spec F1 car? No…if you get into the ultra-fine details (let’s remember it *is* a Lego set after all). However, it’s very clearly a McLaren F1 inspired set that was a lot of fun to build, mess around with, and will surely draw attention when on display. The set is very recognizable, and I’d call it a must-have for any F1/McLaren fan.*****MY GOOD:***** The attention to detail in the actual mechanics of the vehicle is incredible. The functioning differential in the rear, rack-and-pinion steering in the front, visible V6 with moving pistons and camshaft, and spring suspension, for example, are really well done and integrated into the set. The blue (wet-weather) Pirelli tires are perfect for orange/blue livery, but I hope to see ... More*****TLDR:***** Is it a 100% perfect-spec F1 car? The blue (wet-weather) Pirelli tires are perfect for orange/blue livery, but I hope to see some other tire types come out over time so I can switch them out (maybe make them quickly-swappable for fast “Lego pitstops”?).*****MY NEUTRAL:***** As some others have noted, the set’s design and livery is not quite the 2022-spec or the 2021-spec; it’s somewhere in-between. I don’t really mind this because I know the set was developed before each team unveiled their actual 2022 chassis’ design and livery, so they had to work with the 2022 concept and 2021 livery. I also can’t hold the handful of missing sponsors against it, as I’m sure there’s licensing issues at play.*****MY BAD:***** Some pieces are not clearly differentiated in the instructions to make sure you use the right one and/or put it in the right place. To their credit, this *was* done for many parts with warnings to make sure you do use the right part, but this was missed for other parts that could be difficult to distinguish. Separately, I would have liked to have driver numbers stickers (3 for Daniel Ricciardo, 4 for Lando Norris) if there are no licensing issues with that; the much smaller Mercedes F1 set has swappable panels for Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas’s numbers.
The Lego Technic McLaren Formula 1 Race Car is a challenging build that highlights the exceptional engineering and performance design of the modern Formula 1 Car. Papaya orange with touches of blue sport the colour scheme of the 2022 vehicle and contrasts nicely with the new Pirelli closed tyre designs.Unfortunately this set has a lot of stickers (3 sheets worth) which requires a lot of patience to assemble. But the final result is well worth it as the sticker decals are what makes the car so realistic and true to the real life version MCL35 car. True F1 fans will be slightly disappointed that the set is missing optional sticker decals for driver numbers '3' and '4' to portray current McLaren drivers Daniel Riccardo and Lando Norris respectively. However, this does not ultimately take away from the overall display as other features such as working steering, a V6 Turbo Power Unit and adjustable rear wing DRS flap can be moved for further play/display value. It would have be nice to have a display plaque highlighting the specifications of the innovative engineering that went into creating such a breaking edge performance vehicle however, lacking one less sticker doesn't hinder the set value. This set is a must have for any Formula 1 fans (especially McLaren or Riccardo fans) that want something to build whilst watching a grand prix!
As a long time F1 and McLaren fan, this is a must buy. The set looks amazing, but is a strange 2021/2022 hybrid.I would have loved to see the inclusion of stickers for 3 and 4 for Daniel and Lando respectively. The rear wing looks a bit off, especially on the DRS flap. There are a handful of loose connections in this are that break off pretty easily as well.A bit more functionality in the form of a gearbox or opening DRS would have been nice to see. The gearbox may have been a bit of a stretch in the compact body, but a DRS flap has been done before in an older set and would have been a great feature. It is somewhat present here, but only in a very simple form.I also wish there was a removable panel to cover the engine portion. It's awesome to see but I wish ... It's awesome to see but I wish it could be covered for display. The wheels also are a place for improvement. To be a truer model, they would be staggered in size (small front, big rear) and the covers could be more flush or printed, similar to the ones in the Speed Champions set.I think this is an AMAZING set and I hope there are more F1 cars in the future. Great display piece, awesome building experience, one of my favorite sets in a long long time.
Overall I found this Build repetitive and unenjoyable even as a massive F1 Fan.A Large portion of the sets Piece count is pins. It starts to feel relentless especially bag 2 area of the build.Once finished like all technic, it is strong and durable but I did not get the fun factor I usually would with lego.Lego is normally relaxing to me but this was tedious and stressful to understand awkward instructionsI have found this more and more with Technic lately so have decided this will be my last Technic purchase going forward. The retail price for this set is far too high for the amount of smaller pieces inside.Overall a 4/10 set in my opinion and thats without even mentioning the fact its an in between season car, with stranger sticker controversy and so on
