A few reasons to buy. And a few not to.

The other thing is, IBIS breathes new life in my R lenses, esp the heavier R 180 APO Elmarit F2.8 allowing hand-held shooting.2. Shutter is much much smoother with a softer but solidly assuring sound.3. Increased MP is a debatable improvement - unless you print big or have a 5K monitor to enjoy the output, 24MP is adequate. But I will take higher MP considering all other improvements, so call it a win.Not so good compared to SL 601:1. Battery life is worse. Not a lot worse, but measurably less.2. To my eyes, some of the M lenses seem to perform better on the SL 601. However, the 35 FLE 'Lux 50 Lux' ASPH seem to perform fine. In any event, I can't recommend SL 601 or SL2 if your primary use case is M lenses. Get the M240 or M10 for that.3. Packaging. Yes, packaging. SL2 is packed like a consumer grade camera. SL 601 packaging was like a tank itself - much thicker foam inserts on bottom AND top of the box. While packaging doesn't impact image quality (obviously), it just leaves that feeling of a bit of disappointment esp if you have owned SL 601 earlier.Other things:SL Primes. SL prime lenses are the reason to buy this camera. While the SL zooms, 24-90 and its bigger brother 90-280 are solid lenses, carrying them is a nightmare due to size and weight. This is where the SL APO primes shine and finally show what the SL is capable of. If you can't or don't want to get the SL primes, I see no compelling reason to get the SL2. I would get the SL 50 APO to start with and quite possibly that could the only one you need. Be prepared for the jaw to drop.Versus S1R: I don't see a compelling reason to get the SL2 versus the S1R, except if you have a lot of M lenses that you want to use in addition to the L mount lenses. And even then the differences are going to be hard to tell. Certainly don't buy the SL2 and use the Sigma or Panasonic L lenses, it makes no sense. Better get the Panasonic S1R in that case. What you can however, is add the Panasonic 70-200 F4 if you need for travel needs. It is a great zoom and goes well with a SL 35 or SL 50 for a 2-lens kit.Overall:My SL 601 lasted years. Good weather, bad weather, bounced on the side of rocks while hiking. Never failed. Built like a WWII bunker. I expect SL2 to be the same. Colors are wonderful like the original SL. Details breathtaking. Ergonomics good. IBIS is killer. While the cost is high compared to S1R, if you are a long-term keeper and not a gear-head upgrading every year, SL2 is totally worth it. Finally, if you have Q2, this is an ideal companion since they share the same battery. Q2 can be your wide-angle lens and add the SL 75 or 90 APO and you are done.Samples pictures are from around the neighborhood due to current situation of the pandemic.

After trying the camera out several times in Leica stores I made my purchase. I am able to get tac sharp images handheld easily down to 1/30sec and with a bit of breathing down to 1/8sec. The camera also breathes new life into my older R lenses, especially my 100mm APO Macro, which was virtually unusable on the SL Type 601 without a tripod. The menu system and button layout are also amazing, by far the best of any Full Frame Mirrorless camera. The grip is also much better than the Type 601 and the ability to charge or run with battery via USB-C is super nice. Battery life is a bit shorter but not bad. I am also still in process of experimenting with video but so far its pretty good, though without an external recorder it will have its limits. Overall for the price and given the numerous upgrades from the 601 the SL2 is a no brainer upgrade IMHO.

The menu is easy to navigate. The autofocus is fast and intuitive. The images are sharp with beautiful colors and contrast. It’s everything I hoped it would be .And by the way, we made everything a keeper!

I don’t know what you want in a camera. Only you can answer that. But what I wanted was a state-of-the-art image maker that was robustly built and made to last. I wanted this to be my last full frame camera. I wanted a camera that felt good in my hands, that exudes quality workmanship and ergonomic simplicity. I wanted a hunk of finely machined metal instead of the plastic that’s out there by so many. I wanted a camera from a company that has a ethos of excellence and that builds their products with an uncompromising value proposition that places the image fIrst. I wanted a camera that gives me just the right features I need to make great images and nothing more. I wanted a camera that integrates hand-in-glove with the best glass you can buy. I have been waiting for a camera like this from Leica for years. When the original SL was introduced in 2016, I waited a year before I bought one. I own three other M Leica cameras and 8 M lenses. So with the adaptor, I was able to use my M lenses on the SL, which worked out ok for the most part. But then I bought the 24-90 SL lens, then the 90-280 SL and finally, the 16-35 SL. These have become my travel gear kit. I have always loved the results of the SL with it's 3 main lenses. Hard to fault the results. But now... WOW! The improvements are over the top. Leica really did a wonderful job with the SL2. I think I really like the sensor stabilizer the best! Now I can have IS on ALL my lenses. And the stabilizer works fantastically well. Hard to fault the results. But now... WOW! The improvements are over the top. Leica really did a wonderful job with the SL2. I think I really like the sensor stabilizer the best! Now I can have IS on ALL my lenses. And the stabilizer works fantastically well. I am taking handheld shots at 1/6 sec with no loss of details. All the way down to the smallest detail, its all still there. The sensor is now 47 MP! It produces beautifully toned and crisp images. The DR is now 14 stops, I have not confirmed that but it does seem to have a much broader ability at both ends of the spectrum. The grip is improved and is very nice. The rear screen and EVF are both improved. The menu system is changed and is very easy to learn and navigate. Once you get all the things you like set up, usually you don't need to go back into the menu very often. The quick screen has everything within a one or two button push. The only real thing that bugs me is the battery life. It seems to be a little worse than original SL. So make sure you have a couple extra with you. Have not spent any real time with the video, but I intend on learning that since that has been improved dramatically as well. Now, RRS just needs to get a plate made since the original SL does not work on SL2. It is the same shape, but Leica changed the way it fits on the bottom. They omitted the stud hole on the SL2, so the old plate won't mount. Also, I love this part, SL2 now has the OPTION to turn off in camera noise reduction! I love taking long exposure night images, but I never used the original SL for that, since you can't turn it off and then you have to wait the same amount of time for the camera to perform the NR process. Always has bothered me, but now it's back into the line up for long exposure images. If you are an SL shooter, don't hesitate to upgrade. If you are thinking of jumping in from another brand, you won't be disappointed. I pre-ordered mine just 2 hours after it was announced! I'm still learning all the new things, but really, really impressed with it so far.

Leica's Next Level Art Camera Will Inspire You!

My Leica SL2 with Summilux-M 50mm f/1.4 ASPH lens combo is amongst the best camera systems I have ever had the privilege of photographing with. The SL2 and lens are not the lightest or smallest on the block, nor does the SL2 have the fastest autofocus or high-ISO capability. But like everything else in photography, there are always tradeoffs. What this camera does offer is image quality that is absolutely astonishing. The legendary Leica 3D pop and DOF separation (and wide-open lens sharpness) are breathtaking. The color science and micro contrast are simply exceptional. The tank-like weather sealing is robust. The menu systems are wonderfully organized, and the minimalist configuration of the camera makes shooting completely intuitive. The menu systems are wonderfully organized, and the minimalist configuration of the camera makes shooting completely intuitive. I want my camera to get out of the way of my creativity, not hinder it.When it comes to size and heft, everything is relative. Compared to my D850 with 24-70 VR lens, this set-up is roughly comparable, and I feel like the weight and proportions are perfectly counter-balanced for steady handholding. Throw in a fast prime lens combined with the camera's 5-axis in-body sensor-shift image stabilization that delivers approximately 5.5 stops of stabilization, and you have an extremely powerful low-light tool at your disposal. Yes, Leica is expensive, but no more so than many of the flagship models coming from other manufacturers like Sony or Nikon. I find it amusing when I read comments from people who claim that Leica is only for rich doctors and lawyers or that they can buy three cameras for the price of one SL2. When it comes to cameras, it's more important to focus on the value, not the cost. I was able to purchase because I saved up and sold off some of my unused equipment. Leica is a higher-price-point luxury brand just like you'd find in any other retail consumer category. But that doesn't diminish its worth or capability. Some of the most iconic images throughout history have been taken with Leicas, and the hand-crafted philosophy Leica employs on the production line can only be admired. Like any other camera system, Leica is a creative tool and paintbrush. Each of us need to use what works best for our photographic goals. My SL2 with prime lens is my art camera, best used for slower, more thoughtful compositions. When I need blazing speed or focal length flexibility, I break out my very capable D850 with zoom.Owning a Leica will never improve my photography or storytelling, that's always been in my hands. But owning a Leica will inspire you and reward you with some of the best-looking raw files your eyes have ever seen. I'm only getting started.

Kudos Leica fur the ease of use.The sensor is stunning and offers very good recovery possibilities from over and under exposures.I coupled mine with a Panasonic LUMIX Pro 50mm f1.4 and the AF is really fast.Face tracking is good and for my type of photography, eye tracking is doing overall pretty good .My friends have been amazed by the portrait I shot and they also love to shot with this camera.Battery life is one of the little complaint I have, and weight also compared to ... MoreI have received my SL2 over the SL2 S after I was kindly assisted by B&H who put up a video demo online for me to compare .The SL2 is an amazing camera with a very intuitive interface. This is my feedback with Leica SL2. It's not a comparison on technical details because you can look this up on the web yourself. To give you context. My very first camera owned was a Canon 5D mark IV. It was a great camera for so many reasons. I know people really like them for their AF abilities.I found Leica through a person I follow up on instagram. I thought the images were amazing. I would compare the highlights, midtones, and shadows between the two brands. I noticed there was more detail and contrast in Leica images. I know Leica fans will always say it's the Leica image. I am someone who loves details and I pay attention to aesthetics. I took the leap of faith and purchased camera based on this reason alone.I took only a few photos of city that I live ... MoreThis is my feedback with Leica SL2. I immediately compared the Leica photos to Canon. I was stunned! The images does not even compare. There is so much contrast and detail in Leica image. I found myself spending long minutes staring at the image. To give you context. I compared Canon 50mm lens vs. Leica 35 Summicron SL.In summary, I know people will compare the price of the camera. I get that. It boils down to your budget. But if you are a commercial photographer then Leica is the brand you should only consider. I know there are brands like PhaseOne, etc. I love Leica heritage and their products are bar none in my opinion. I always believe you get what you pay for. I'd rather have a camera that I know won't believe obsolete in 5-10 years. I hope this is helpful.

Well-done Wetzlar!

I have been using the M system since I was 16 years old all the way from M4-P to now my beloved M10-P. With the Panasonic joining force with Leica on the SL system, I decided to take the plunge (My everyday system is based on the Lumix G9, so I know Panasonic quality, first hand). About 1 year ago, I bought the S1R, and start building up my Leica SL lens collection. I now own the SL Summicron 35mm and 75mm, as well as the SL Summilux 50mm. Finally, the Leica SL2 body came... Having used the S1R for about 1 year, I have some perspective. 1. Image quality of both body is very similar. 2. Construction and design of the SL2 is much, much better (not that the SR1 is poor, just another level). 3. With the M-SL adaptor on, and my M lenses, the SL2 behave amazingly well and ... MoreI have been using the M system since I was 16 years old all the way from M4-P to now my beloved M10-P. Construction and design of the SL2 is much, much better (not that the SR1 is poor, just another level). 3. With the M-SL adaptor on, and my M lenses, the SL2 behave amazingly well and better than the S1R with some lenses like my M18mm f3,4 (less definition loss on extreme corners full opened). 4. All my SL lenses are performing at a much higher level that their M lenses equivalent, clarity is better, extreme corners are better... but the SL lenses are really heavier, bigger so there is a real trade-off for performances. 6. the interface on the SL2 is really well-thought. It is a delight to use, much better than the S1R that was - to me - much more practical than a Nikon Z7 for example (that I owned, also). 7. Everything that is implemented so far, software wise, works! WiFi, Bluetooth, stabilization, software updates of lenses (Compare this with Nikon Z7 Bluetooth still in limbo!). 8. LeicaFotos 2 for iPad is a delight to import your raw DNG files directly into Lightroom iOS. Great! The SL2 is the perfect autofocus companion for a M system. We dreamed for it, and Leica delivered. Thanks a lot guys. Great job!PS: Waiting for the implementation of multi shot super high resolution mode in the next firmware.
