Staking the claim as the reference 50mm, the Summilux-SL 50mm f/1.4 ASPH. Lens from Leica promises to create phenomenal images with edge-to-edge sharpness, even wide open. Designed for Leica's full-frame SL-series of mirrorless cameras, this 50mm benefits from a new design granted by the short flange distance. It also leverages two aspherical elements and four anomalous partial dispersion elements in order to keep aberrations to an absolute minimum. The fast maximum aperture of f/1.4 furthers your imaging capabilities by creating images with a shallow depth of field and in low-light conditions. A multi-layer coating helps prevent flare and ghosting along with the included rectangular lens hood. The internal focusing lens also has a non-rotating filter ring for precise use of numerous filter types. Additionally, it boasts a dust- and moisture-resistant design.

Absolutely amazing lens when it comes to sharpness, color fidelity, contrast, falloff, low light performance and of course bokeh. I purchased it to complement my APO Summicron SL 50mm. The summilux is so good that the APO Summicron hasn't been used once since I got this lens. Autofocus is about 20% slower than the APO Summicron SL lenses but when you nail focus on that perfect shot this lens creates magic and reminds you why you spent $6595.00. Its also built like a tank so durability is unrivaled.

The 50mm f/1.4 Summilux SL is a stunning lens. Yes, it is slower to focus, heavier and less contrasty than the 50mm APO Summicron SL. If you are concerned with focus speed and/or weight, then rent the APO Summicron SL, otherwise the contrast differences are quite negligible and the DOF is really beautiful. I shot on the SL2-S and created some really beautiful images that I'm extremely proud of. The color & light rendering are typical Leica, a.k.a. stunningly beautiful. Other alternatives are the Panasonic 50mm f/1.4 but it doesn't render the color or light quite as nicely as the Leica, though its significantly cheaper. Rent this if you've got the budget, muscle and don't mind a slightly slower focus speed.

This is one of the best deals in the Leica world. Though it is not a ASPH lens, its image quality is comparable--but its price is not. Like most Leica lenses, it is all metal and glass, having very satisfying "heft," yet still relatively compact. The focus is as smooth as butter. The diaphragm clicks smartly. It does not come much better than this.

This is by far the best 50mm lens ever made. Sure it had the slow auto focus initially, but with firmware updates this has been fixed. I would highly recommend this lens if you can afford it. This lens best suits Portraits, landscapes.

This lens is the epitome of Leica design and quality. It is good in low light, and generally quick focusing - hunts a bit in lower light situations. Aside from the weight, this is great glass.

Excellent image quality, which I can go on and on about. The lens is built like all Leica products, solid. We all need a good 50mm lens and this is an exceptional one.

Massive, but expect rewarding imagery.

Leica M shooter for decades (now M10P), I decided to try the SL system with the Panasonic S1R coupled with this Summilux-SL 50mm. The combo impress with unconventional size and weight. Once working on the 47 Mpx raw files in Lightroom, your efforts are rewarded: I never had this type of resolution with any f/1.4 lens! No softness at all. The smoothness of the out of focus areas is remarkable, bokeh is really unique and makes this lens part of best practices for any portrait photography. AF could be faster, but at this point, I am glad that it is precise enough to get the image perfectly sharp where I want, mostly when I want it. Truly a master piece, this lens should be on your to-shoot-with list. I did some side by side comparisons with the Leica M Apo-Summicron 50mm f/2 and it seems to me that the SL is over performing it in overall clarity/definition at same aperture. A-MA-ZING. The real issue, after this one (almost) everything looks kind of faded, so you have no choice but to carry the load!

I've used pretty much every 50mm worth owning by Sony/Canon/Nikon.This 50 is the best, if you can deal with the physical size it's just stunning. On a SL2 the focus accuracy at f1.4 is fantastic, and it's very sharp. The bokeh is just gorgeous. Stopped down to f/8-11 - it's a incredible landscape lens rendering tons of detail. If you can afford it, get it.

This lens is AMAZING, it's the sharpest 50 I've ever shot, colors are rich and match what the eye see's. AF on my SL is very accurate. The transition from in focus to the out of focus area makes everything you shoot pop.I shot it head to head with the tiny M version on my SL, I had both for a few weeks. The images where nearly identical but with the SL, every image was in perfect focus, not so much with the M version when you're not shooting static subjects. So, I sold the M version. The AF could be faster, it feels like a portrait lens in that respect, like an 85mm speed and as far as size it's huge and heavy...A serious beast. But, it's the best 50 I've shot, Canon L's, Sony GM's, Sigma Art's, Nikon G's....Leica M's....Doesn't matter, if you want the best 50, and ... MoreThis lens is AMAZING, it's the sharpest 50 I've ever shot, colors are rich and match what the eye see's. This is quite possibly the best lens I have ever shot with. It is large and heavy. But as many have said, it balances nicely on the camera. And the images are stunning. So much so, that I did not mind the extra weight in the bag. I just left other lenses at home. Just a gorgeous piece of equipment. I haven’t tried the Summicron. I think this is the lens for me.
