A Nice Laptop for the Lower Price Point

I picked this laptop on sale and I'm quite happy with it so far. For the specs and upgradability it is very good. I immediately upgraded my stock model to a 1TB hard drive and 32 GB ram. I've had several other ThinkPads and they've been good for quality and reliability so this is why I wanted another ThinkPad for my new computer and I'm expecting the same reliability from this laptop. The fit and finish is good although I do expect the smooth finish of the plastic surfaces to mark up easier and show scratches easier compared to the finishes on my X1 or my T series. Time will tell. This could have been fixed by downloading and installing the driver (as well as reinstalling every time I did a kernel upgrade) but I didn't want that so I swapped out the module for an Intel AX200 as they are cheap and it's easy to do and they're supported in the kernel. Would've been nice if the Intel module was in there from stock (like in the Intel CPU models of these computers). The other thing I notice is there seems to be unused space under the hood around the hard drive so it would've been nice if they could've use that space better and maybe stuck in a bigger battery. But all in all I'm happy for the price point where it was at on sale.

For sure it's not as good as the classic IBM keyboard, but beat other brands easily- screen is just ok and bad compared to my MacBook Air, screen is usually ThinkPad's weakest link. Conclusion: The L14 G2 is not those sexy super thin laptop, but it gets the work done anywhere, anytime and almost any environment.

This review is necessarily of the first month or so of having owned this laptop, as that is how long I have had it.Having gone from a Spectre x360 to this, the main trait that attracted me was the very good price to spec ratio that this laptop provided when it was on sale. So far, at least, it seems to hold true to that idea with all of my light gaming and processing needs being comfortably handled. The ports this laptop has are also quite utilitarian and I can connect anything I need easily. It fits fine into a laptop bag from Dell, so the form factor is a comfortable standard. That being said, I must say that I miss having a touch screen available on a laptop, though that is no fault of this laptop. The battery is quite good, and I can use this laptop comfortably for a few hours of gaming or an effectively day-long bout of light work/internet browsing. The screen is nice and colorful, though the technical details on that eludes me so check another site for more details. The laptop feels solidly built and stable, and the fact that you can plug it into a dock for more utilities and ports is a very nice touch, though I haven't done this myself yet. It is a modern-feeling laptop and I have no complaints about performance. The last thing I will mention however is the large sort of wasted area at the bottom of the screen. Below the screen of this laptop, there is a large space where there is no screen, just plastic. It kind of makes sense, but it does look a little out of place in this case, even if other laptops are the same. I suppose this was to squeeze the extra components in, or perhaps just a standard of the form factor. It is simply my opinion that it looks a little bit chunky.Overall, this laptop has satisfied my needs and especially for the price I picked it up for, $1000 CAD, I am very happy with it.

Disappointed
16 May 2022

I had to purchase a new computer 5 months after paying over $1000 for one that got wet and died. This new one is impossible to set up for OneDrive, where all my files are backed up. I've been on chat sessions with Microsoft and Lenovo, to no avail. I've gotten as far as files supposedly downloading, only to find, after a couple of hours, that there's a "network error" and it won't download. According to Microsoft, the serial number of my computer doesn't exist, so it won't work. Very, VERY annoying. After a couple of weeks, I'm still trying to download my backup from OneDrive, with no success. I loved that my last Lenovo automatically updated from OneDrive, almost instantaneously, and I went right to work without interruption. Fingerprint scanner frustrates me
28 January 2022

I’m a loyal Thinkpad fan since IBM. I hate the soldered RAM of trendy notes so basically I have no choice other than Thinkpad. I received one had a little scratch on the frame. It’s just a minor cosmetic thing but that was a bit disappointed in QC of Lenovo. I love this L14 itself though I hate the smooth surface which easily gets oily and looks gross when I use the touchpad because I use hand cream always. I miss textured hard plastic shell that Thinkpad used to be. The fingerprint scanner is a joke. It doesn’t scan 4 out of 5 times and I have to input a pin instead. This never happened with the old Thinkpad models which has a metal scanner. Am I doing wrong?Backlit keyboard has 2 level brightness which is very useful. G2 is not bad, prefer Lenovo Yoga
14 February 2022

The G2 is not a bad laptop. I had a Lenovo Yoga before I got a G2 and I found the Yoga to be better for a few reasons. The screen resolution, speakers, and laptop weight was better with the Yoga. The G2 is heavy, the screen resolution is not great and the specs said the speakers are good, but I find them to be a bit weak. Also, the fingerprint reader doesn't seem to work.On the positive side, the G2 processor speed is very quick and responsive. The build of the laptop is bulkier compared to the Yoga but it does feel sturdy. I really like the G2's keyboard, it has a nice responsive feel. I like that there are many port options to plug things into. The process to order this laptop on Lenovo's website was great. Good laptop, support gets an F
1 February 2022

I'm very happy with this laptop, and I purchased a support contract for in-house service if i need it. Also bought the ThinkPad quiet mouse that connects via bluetooth and uses an internal receiver (no external usb dongle required). Two weeks old and today my wifi device failed to start, which resulted in no internet connectivity. I called the support number and after the initial menu routed me to tech support for ThinkPad, I got a fast busy signal and then it hung up on me! Frustrated and disappointed, I persevered in troubleshooting until I figured out the issue. I had hooked up to an external monitor (via a usb/HDMI dongle) that also had a mouse connected via usb, since that is what my other laptop uses. Good little machine.
2 June 2022

Generally, I'm quite happy with the L14. I had been using a T450 for a few years but it was underpowered for my current needs. I choose the L14 Gen 2 because of the price and the specs, one key factor for me was the 2x sodimm slots instead of soldered. I went with the AMD because of other reviews and recommendations. The case is quite good, I'd say on a par with the T450. I had my concerns when I ordered it because the L series is a step below the T series, but it proved to be a good choice. I had an issue with the installed Windows shortly after I started using it, and another issue when I tried to restore (multiple times) with the rescue version. Runs Linux great
22 February 2023

I bought this intending to install Linux on it and it worked out perfectly. There have been no compatibility problems with any of the built-in hardware. The specs are generous for the (deeply discounted) price although I would have liked it to come with more RAM. So far it's performed well enough despite that, but if the amount of memory does become a problem, I like that it's socketed rather than soldered so it can be upgraded. The camera shutter is a nice touch as well although a little fiddly to use. The one thing I would change about this computer if I could is a brighter screen - it's a little dim for working outside although the anti-glare finish does help.

Much more than the more expensive X1 series (which I own 3 different versions too). One notable area where the L14 could be improved in the bezel which is quite thick. The entire laptop could either be made smaller or the screen enlarge without making the laptop bigger. There is about an extra inch, so this is not insignificant.
