First ThinkPad, I quite love it. The machine has performed well so far and I appreciate the relatively bloat-free OS that Lenovo gives you out of the box. I also enjoy the new keyboard layout (conventional ctrl and fn) and the haptic touchpad has worked flawlessly so far. Still, i wish the keystrokes are a bit more silent for people who work in library often. The screen is nice, bright, and the high refresh rate is a nice quality of life feature for this. Thermals has been okay, though fans are still audible even when only youtube is playing. I got the 4060, small blender scenes has been acceptable so far, though the card it seems to struggle even with lightweight games (Far: Changing tides) so I was a little disappointed by it. Finally, the machine feels well made overall. I am a long time XPS user and was not disappointed with this P1G7. The keyboard deck feels solid with minimal flex, and the speakers are quite nice. One small thing that I am not much a fan of is how much fingerprint are visible on the palmrest and outer shell, and the material of the outer shell feels plasticky and flexes more than i expected.

Great for data science, pay attention to TGP

A good data science workstation is basically a workstation with a consumer grade GPU. I wish Thinkpads had more options like this. This laptop is also great if you need decent performance without excessive heft. The P16 model has gotten significantly heavier than my old P53 which I would consider to be my limit of weight tolerance. I think anywhere in the range of 4-5 pounds with a TGP of 60-90 W is a good sweet spot. I might even suggest that Lenovo makes a heavier P-model (the P2?) that's about 5 pounds and 90 W (halfway between the P1 and the P16) in order to compete with the Dell Precision 5690 but offer the option of consumer graphics cards. If the dell offered a consumer graphics model at a good price, I may have very well went with that instead.I'm surprised to find that the landscape of "data science workstation" machines is still so underserved with respect to value. However, I found the P1 Gen 7 (with the GeForce RTX 4070 GPU) to be the best value for the money at the time of writing.

[Rewarded Review] Best Laptop I Have Owned, to-date!!
4 November 2024

The ThinkPad P1 Gen7 is the best laptop I have owned, to-date. This laptop will replace my workhorse ThinkPad T430 (Intel Core i7 vPro 2.9GHz, upgraded to 16GB RAM, 1600x900 display, upgrade to 1TB SATA, Windows 10, TPM 1.2, and not Windows 11/12 upgradeable) which I purchased in 2012 to work on my doctorate. My new P1 G7 has an Intel Core i9 vPro 3.2 GHz, 64GB RAM and 4TB SATA, 4K touchscreen display, runs Windows 11, and it is FAST!! The only major thing to get use to with the P1 G7 is the keyboard geometry, left and right mouse button activators, and Lenovo swapped the locations of the the "Ctrl" an "Fn" keys which is just plain annoying but I will get use to it. Also with a 4K display, all my other secondary displays (fixed and portables) are 1920 x1080 and it is annoying to keep reducing the application object dimensions to go from the 4K to 1K displays, so I will have to get those updates to 4K soon when the prices drop.Other than that, I hope to get more than 12 years use out of this laptop like I did with my T430. I would still be using today my T430 today if I could somehow get a TPM upgrade so that I could install and run Windows 11. I love that the P1 G7 is much thinner than the now fat T430.

I've been really happy with this laptop. It's the first Lenovo I've purchased for myself, but I use Lenovo hardware for work so I have some familiarity with them already. I got this laptop to use for personal programming and development projects, and to be able to play some games on the go.The display quality is exceptional. I'm really happy with the color and resolution. The size of the display itself is good -- large enough to give a good amount of room to work with, while not making the laptop ludicrously large and unable to fit in most backpacks or cases. On the topic of size, I'm definitely pleased with the dimensions of this laptop, particularly the thickness. It's reasonably thin and lightweight, while still providing some solid specs. Its design seems to be such that cooling and ventilation are not issues. When I'm working on something fairly resource-intensive, the laptop's fans will kick on, but it doesn't sound so loud like a Harrier is taking off in my living room.I like the keyboard. It's not my absolute favorite, but the tactile feedback and responsiveness of the keys are good. The trackpad is good. I still think MacBooks have the best trackpads, but the one on my ThinkPad is pretty well responsive and isn't finicky. The battery has been great. I feel like I get a good amount of runtime out of the battery before I have to worry about charging.I've traditionally been a MacBook Pro user for a very long time, and while I still have one, this ThinkPad has become my primary laptop.

[Rewarded Review] It's a dream machine that you can also cook on
13 September 2024

OLED touch display, 4TB Drive, 64GB RAM NVIDIA 4070 i9 13 or 14th gen intel chip, all in a stylishly thin laptop. A dream machine for me. This computer had an NVIDIIA 4070 GPU but also still had the intel GPU. The laptop OLED screen was connected to the intel GPU and the NVIDIA has nothing hooked to it. I didn't explore whether the NVIDIA could be routed to the internal monitor but presumably you could connect external monitors or VR headsets to it. It also had an i9 13th generation chip, so this is a powerful machine. Having had some experience with the i9 chip on a couple of desktops I knew how hot the chip gets so I asked a chat person at Lenovo whether there were any problems keeping this computer cool and she said it had a new state of the art cooling ... MoreOLED touch display, 4TB Drive, 64GB RAM NVIDIA 4070 i9 13 or 14th gen intel chip, all in a stylishly thin laptop. Having had some experience with the i9 chip on a couple of desktops I knew how hot the chip gets so I asked a chat person at Lenovo whether there were any problems keeping this computer cool and she said it had a new state of the art cooling system. It's a pretty thin case, a great monitor, not a lot of ports but I knew I'd have to add some external box for ports. So, when I got it, I went about doing updates and installing programs and the computer got sooo hot you could fry eggs on it. It was hot just idling but if you gave it anything to do the fan winds up to 100% and just stays there. It's nice and quiet when you first turn it on but within minutes it's the loudest thing in the room and never settles down. Me thinks they tried to put too much power in this little box. So, I returned it for three reasons 1. it seemed silly to pay for 2 GPUs but what do I know, maybe that's always the case when you add an NVIDIA. That alone wouldn't have made me return it. 2. It runs so hot I felt like it would burn itself out in a short amount of time and even if the chip was staying cool 3. the volume of the fan running full blast all the time was too much. This last reason would have made me return the laptop all by itself. I would pay for a much bulkier laptop if it had all these features and stayed quiet.

[Rewarded Review] Upgraded from an older Lenovo laptop to the new P1
13 August 2024

I love my new ThinkPad P1 Gen 7 work laptop! The build quality is superior and it is light weight. It has a significant increase in processing power compared to the previous Lenovo that I have repurposed for personal use. Changing from a 14" to a 16" screen is another benefit that allows me to increase font size with less scrolling. My system consists of this laptop, a new Thunderbolt 4 Workstation Dock, and four new ThinkVision 27" monitors. Using the dock frees up all of the laptop connections, providing extra convenience and versatility in my daily work. I'm totally happy with my new Lenovo laptop and system as a whole. Thanks Lenovo for designing and building high quality products!

[Rewarded Review] Very good mobile workstation
6 November 2024

The laptop itself is very nice; I had it now for about a month, and I have not used it enough to say is what I expected or not. It runs fast; my architecture programs run smoothly. As it is a very expensive laptop, I kind of expected a super luxury finish (I had a MacBook Pro before). It is true that the design is minimalist, but for me it feels like plastic, and it isnt that solid (the screen is sort of flexible)The display itself is good; the only con is that when using it in darkness and with black images in the screen, soft light lights are visible in the bottom of the screen (like the source of the screen light or something)These are details. The laptop is beautiful, and if it runs perfectly, I just kind of expected a bit more perfection.

oversold bleeding-edge AI capability - dubious HW
5 October 2024

i'm upgrading from a previous state-of-the-art Lenovo mobile laptop workstation that i needed to swap out to this one for.i am not sold on this new machine because of it's 'step in the wrong direction' from HW architecture storage perspective. trying to push the AI envelope requires pushing DWBI throughput | latency, and with Lenovos's dubious HW architecture decision with this machine, they've made this a lot harder to demonstrate with an all-in-one Lenovo mobile laptop workstation like i could do before. the new machine likely cannot outperform older-generation machines as a consequence. and this is exceedingly disappointing. the new AI-centered CPU may never outshine the older machine's CPU with better HW storage architecture.
