Liquitex Matte Gel Medium, 946 ml
Add depth and dimension to your artwork with Professional Acrylic Matte Gel Medium, Clear. This versatile medium thickens acrylic paint for textural applications while maintaining a smooth, matte finish. Use it to extend paint volume, create impasto textures, or as an adhesive for collage and mixed-media work. When mixed with color, it increases body, reduces gloss, and preserves pigment intensity. It can also be used as a clear matte ground or to modify sheen in existing paint layers. Permanent and non-yellowing once dry, this gel medium provides flexible, water-resistant results suitable for both fine art and design applications. Its professional-grade consistency ensures superior control and reliable performance on canvas, wood, and other prepared surfaces.

I've been using Golden and Liquitex modeling paste (or molding paste, depending on mfr.) for 2 decades. Both products are about the same in terms of quality, at least for my uses. While Liquitex comes in basically one type, Golden has Hard, Medium and Soft. Golden's product dries with a slight sheen, whereas Liquitex is more of a matte finish, so this might make a difference for some artists. Both take acrylic and oils nicely. It's very useful to put a layer on canvas or board (thinner on canvas or you'll get shrinkage problems) in order to get an impasto look or various textures. It can be carved or sanded later as well with tools or a Dremel. I've done some amazing things with this product, such as laying down one color over the texture, sanding and then going back in with another color for a high-lighted texture look. I've mixed this product with paper maché for near-permanent sculptures and sand for rough textures on bas relief pieces. I've used it to fill holes in concrete works, to repair torn canvases, to fill cracks in woodwork and more. There is some shrinkage over time, so heavy use on canvases is not something I'd recommend but you can lay it on thick on any strong substrates like HDF, MDF, wood or PVC. It's pricey stuff for the average artist, so I often look for a sale when I buy it. 100s of uses!

For Gel Mediums, this is THE go-to for mixed media, collage, and lots of fine art practices. Best product that Liquitex makes! I like the 'matte' version for art journaling, first layers of collage and mixed media - there's no extra shine. It goes on cloudy white and dries clear. x

As my attached photo of 2 of my recent acrylic paintings show, Liquitex's Matte Super Heavy Gel Medium is quite versatile. I can, with even the same mixture of blue and medium, layer differing densities in overlapping waves, or, as seen on the right side painting, palette knife down to the canvas itself, lightly or heavily, and achieve different intensities of blue. In both works, the colors are nice and clean and clear. Puffy-like, Liquitex's gel is easy to mix and move around, but once left on the canvas, holds the applied texturing really nicely! My rating for 4 stars is for a minor but important attribute of the gel, or at least the one I have - it has a distinct odor that some folks might not notice or mind, but I do best having the ceiling fan on or the window ... MoreAs my attached photo of 2 of my recent acrylic paintings show, Liquitex's Matte Super Heavy Gel Medium is quite versatile. It's certainly not enough to keep me from continuing to use this very hand product with my acrylics, but is something to be aware of. Still highly recommend trying.

Used this modeling paste for the first time with my raised stenciling artwork and I love that you can go over the stencil pattern for a thick impasto look. Other mediums I used would crack after drying but this product is made for sculpting. Always helps to have the correct product for the task, lol.
I am new to painting. Will want to try a larger size abstract painting for my house once I feel more confident. I’ve watched videos learning the ropes. Artists frequently use various gels to create texture to their abstracts. I purchased this and used on a small abstract to get an idea of how to go about this new craft. I am happy with how easy it is to use and how I can create different textures on my painting which makes a more interesting finished product. I’m sure in time I will likely try the other gel mediums. It’s fun!
Great product. Used for transferring laser prints to a wood base. Was very forgiving and allowed for easy touch up when using label paper in the printer. If something doesn’t transfer, just dab on a bot more and press down. Much better than poly acrylic or mod podge.
Writing reviews because of the #sweepstakes prod. I use Liquitex Ultra Heavy Gloss Medium & their Gloss Varnish for doing hydroabrasion (also called water abrasion & a number of other terms) on porcelain and bone china before they are fired. Instead of shellac, wax, or modge podge which almost all ruin your brushes, or aren't heavy duty enough, or don't fire out well enough in the kiln, both the Liquitex products you can use your best brushes which help you create the best designs, by painting the varnish or medium on the dry clay surface, sometimes layering more varnish/medium to get more raised areas after you use a damp sponge to wipe away the clay in between the varnished areas, which leaves the protected areas dry and raised in relief. Most products just have ... MoreWriting reviews because of the #sweepstakes prod. It is a water based product so it comes off my brushes easily and I can keep my best brushes in good shape. I add a little vegetable dye to it usually so I can see my designs better and how thick I have made them, but that burns out in the firing, and this product cleanly burns out in the kiln with no increase in fumes like with shellac, And unlike some of the other products used for this technique, it burns out without a trace, not leaving grungy bits that have to be cleaned off or even dremeled off. It also really doesn't smell like the shellac does. I have tried shellac, various kinds of wax-ceramic and non-ceramic, and modge podge, which was supposed to be the savior for this technique but it turns out Liquitex mediums and varnishes actually are! No cons whatsoever for this product for my technique.
Love this product! I use this on canvas with acrylic paint to add texture and dimension. It's easy to use, dries quickly and takes my paintings to a whole new level. The gallon size goes a long way and is a much better value than the smaller sizes. Once you use it, you'll get addicted to it.
I love this stuff. Besides its usual uses, it can invisibly stick pretty much any two things together. I have repaired ceramic pieces with it. I have seen it hold wooden stretcher bars on Masonite panels. Great on paper and cardboard. It works fast, too.
Good quality and I use it fairly often to add to my acrylic paints. It has several uses for me…it can be added to quality pigmented paint to make it go further without affecting the colors un you add too much. It thickens the paints to allow for impasto/palette knife techniques although caution is needed as it is slow drying. Too thick and cracking may develop. Properly thinned, it can be used as an excellent barrier before using varnish. It leaves a high gloss finish .
