I’ve been wanting this piece forever & decided it was time & so glad I bought it. Another bonus is the lid can be used to bake in as well. It’s the perfect 5 quart cast iron & cooked an all day long chili very well without scorching on low simmer. Retained moisture very well. It did need to be reseasoned after using, but I generally do that on all my cast iron cookware.

Love it. The size is perfect for making bread in it or using it for many other meals. I really like that it can be used on top of my glass top stove, or in the oven, or on a grill. It was well seasoned already, but I cleaned it, then seasoned it again before I used it. The first time I used it I baked a loaf of artisan bread. It turned out perfect! Best price and best cast iron. Lodge cast iron is the best you can get, and some of the least expensive cast iron cookware.

I 1st learned to cook in cast iron many decades ago ... in my grandmother's large cast iron skillet (believe it was an original Lodge) ... so I will always love cooking in cast iron ... I have been slowly replacing items lost to storm damage subsequent theft was happy to finally replace the 5 qt multi use Double Dutch Oven ... it is great for making everything from stews, slow roasts, etc to baking bread (try a good No Knead Recipe) ... not to mention the added bonus of the lid doubling as a handy skillet ... I highly recommend this set to anyone ... but it especially makes a great starter set for those just beginning to build their cookware collection or those w/limited space {because it is so multi-functional} ...Added benefit of cooking in cast iron is the fact ... MoreI 1st learned to cook in cast iron many decades ago ... in my grandmother's large cast iron skillet (believe it was an original Lodge) ... so I will always love cooking in cast iron ... I grew up eating foods cooked in cast iron. My elders were Southern so... I already had inherited a couple of skillets and had one I bought hut... This Dutch oven is next level. My mother had one and would cook part of the meal in the deep pan and something else in the skillet part (usually cornbread). I have picked up the tradition. Even though this was supposed to be seasoned when I bought it, I know better. It took about 4 months to get it near perfect and I expect to have it seasoned slick in another 6 months. This is versatile. I have cooked stews, meats, cakes, cornbread, and roasted whole chickens. Whenever anyone in our family was anemic or chronically fatigued, my mom would fix liver in cast iron to raise their levels. Best investment!
12 August 2020

LOVE this; have been researching and searching for a cast iron Dutch oven designed like this - the dual use of the lid as a skillet is smart and practical. Ive always thought it a shame that you couldnt utilise pot lids as pan too. And Lodge has a strong history of making cast iron goods. Its used almost daily in my kitchen. There was some excess oil staining but it details all the imperfection reasons in the Lodge manufacturers booklet that it comes with, which is helpful. So wasnt concerned at all. And after seasoning a few times, its developing such a beautiful finish. Highly recommend.

Fantastic investment!

Bought my double pan Dutch oven several years back and it is still a great addition to the kitchen! Would recommend for anyone starting out. While chickens, stews, and boules of bread are just some uses for this DO. You can also very easily pan fry in this! Excellent investment.

Great versatile pot to last a lifetime
12 January 2023

Bought this mainly for baking sourdough loafs. Works perfect for that, as well as general cooking and frying. The factory conditioning gives it a beautiful black finish that works well against sticking. The lid makes a great fry pan. The weight is hefty (it is cast iron) but not a problem. With care this should last well beyond my life. And made is the USA by a long established company. LOVE IT!

The 5qt is almost the same weight as the 3.2qt chicken cooker
16 November 2021

13.8 lbs which is only 2 oz's heavier than the 3.2 qt chicken cooker. The cast iron is thinner, looks good and still works great. Provides plenty of room for cooking your favorite comfort food, chicken or small turkey. Works well in the smokers, and for breads. I really like the dual purpose uses that this 5qt provides. Use the lid as a skillet all of the time. If the 5qt was any bigger, it would not fit the portable induction unit. No complaints yet

Totally excited for camp cookin' on my new Lodge

Delivery on this item got scrambled somehow but Walmart customer service made it right and I received the cookware the very next day. They have earned my trust.I purchased this dutch oven specifically to cook in my RV. The oven burns things like biscuit bottoms and it is too small to hold a long handled pan. I have heard that the cast iron prevents scorching because it cooks more evenly than traditional metal pans. I tested this dutch oven for fit and it slid right in the oven with room to spare. It also fit nicely on the burners. The quality is the same as my Lodge skillet, not at all disappointing. I can't wait to get cookin' on this cast iron double dutch out at the camp sites. If it were possible, I would like to see how larger openings on the handles would work. As it is, three fingers fit in there easily and an oven mitt works okay but, I might feel more comfortable handling a heavy and often boiling hot pot with a larger handle to grip.

Versatile dutch oven
13 June 2016

I go camping several times a year so I want a dutch oven that would be good for both indoor & outdoor cooking. After weeks of agonizing over whether to get the camp dutch oven with legs or other indoor dutch ovens (enamels vs. naked cast iron, other styles), I finally settled on this one for its versatility. Here are my reasons why:- Its lid can double as a pan so you can simultaneously brown your meat on the lid and in the dutch oven to speed up the browning process. At the end, you would only have 1 pot to wash. You can also use this lid with your 10" Lodge skillet so you are saving more than $20. For camping, I would only need to bring this pot rather than an indoor dutch oven with the regular lid and a separate skillet.- For outdoor cooking with charcoal, I can use the Lodge dutch oven lid stand to elevate the pot (much like the legs on the outdoor dutch ovens) and put charcoal underneath. Since the lid is flat, I can also put charcoal in a pie plate or a round take-out foil container to outdoor baking.- For outdoor cooking on a propane camp stove, I can use the lowest heat setting and add the Camp Chef dutch oven dome to insulate & recirculate the heat without needing a separate heat source (usually charcoal) for the lid for even cooking/baking.There are other indoor cast iron dutch ovens that I did not choose. Here are the reasons why:- Enameled dutch oven - Since I would be using my dutch oven outdoors for camping, these enameled dutch ovens cannot take direct fire. Also, there are reports of chipping on enameled dutch ovens so they are not right for my indoor/outdoor needs.- Dutch oven with the regular lid - Since I may need to add charcoal on the lid for outdoor baking, it would be more difficult with the dome lid since the charcoal would slide off.I have several Lodge skillets, chef's platter & dutch oven. There seems to be some variation in the finish. There were 2 pin-size holes (pits) in the first dutch oven I received from another vendor. I returned it. The second dutch oven did not have any pits but its finish was rougher. I will season it a few times to see whether it would smooth out the rough finish a bit. Although my Lodge skillets had smoother finish (though still rough) when they were new, the rough surface did not seem to impact their non-stickness. So, smoothness may not equate to non-stickness for cast iron.I am very happy with the versatility of this dutch oven and look forward to using it both indoors & outdoors. I just wish that Lodge would make a 12" version of this dutch oven so I can feed more people.
