I have the original version of the 400 AW, but long realized that it had some downsides (what bag doesn't?). I saw the version III in the B&H store in November and realized that the new version solved several of the complaints that I had with the original. I wanted to find a camera case to protect my Nikon D500 with attached Nikkor 200-500 mm lens attached. It is a pretty long set up and my frustration has been having swap out lenses for a shorter one just to pack the camera away safe. I read reviews of the Flipside 500 and it looked and sounded like it should work. Well it works outstandingly. My camera and lens attached fit lengthwise with cushioning all around. It is not moving around one bit. I do remove the lens hood and turn it around backwards so it has a space to fit. First the PROS, it looks nice on the outside and is a bit more compact, great if you're travelling as turning around with the original meant you had to be mindful not to hit someone. Also like another reviewer mentioned the bottom no longer has hinges SUPPORT so if you try to open the bag while you have the waist strap around you. Things will fall out.5. The front compartment is smaller now. In the v1 I could fit a jacket. Plus it had smaller pouches for pens and passport and other details, all missing in the current version.6. The internal compartment foam dividers are much thinner then before. My newer RLX 450 has pads the same thickness as the V1 and is great for padding my gear. The AWIII for some reason being newer is thinner.Lots of things to complain about the various downgrades as you'd expect things to improve over time. But absolutely you can tell they didnt design this with the care of their older models.

I just returned from my first photo trip with this backpack and really liked it. What a quality, sturdy pack. I was skeptical about the flipside-open movement (new to me), but it works really well. I carried two camera bodies and three lenses-one telephoto, one wide-angle, one mid-range-and would have room for one more. My 15 MacBook Pro also fits in it. Great side pockets: I carried a Stanley thermos in one and a thermal bottle in the other, but they're obviously versatile. Since it holds so much, the pack can get pretty heavy, so I opted to carry my tripod separately, but I like the way it attaches to the pack when you do want to carry it that way. Inside the pack, the small pouch is helpful and I love that it's removable, but there's something about the design ... Nice bag!Doesn't have all the extra added pockets for extra electronics, such as laptop, power cords, and so on.But the bag is Excellent for just carrying lenses and other items needed for photography. It's wonderful to only have to concentrate on photography and not worry about post production.Only complaints the zipper is a little difficult opening all the way. The belt gets in the way, but it's not a real problem, you just have to get used to the minor inconvenience.The bag would be better if it were 3" longer and maybe 3 or 4 inches wider.Overall, it appears fairly well built and is comfortable to wear.

Instead your tripod needs to stick out on top. I have a ~1kg tripod, and even that won't fit here with the ballhead facing down.3. The quick-access side pocket. You want security, but also want a side access pocket ? A top access would actually make more sense than the side access. (gravity likes to pull things down you see, and with side pockets - stuff can fall out if you are not careful.)It's hard to fit a body nicely without compromising storage if you intend on using this side pocket regularly. And you lose a bottle holder because of this.4. cheap front pockets. Definitely seems like cost-cutting. Compared to the AW II version, this seems like a step down.5. Compared to the AWII, you also lose the front tripod holder - which may have been nicer for larger tripods.Overall, this is a bit of a mish-mash. Maybe good to carry stuff for travel. Or if you are in a city, photographing between sipping lattes in cafes. :) But on a day-hike and such, doesn't work so well.This has the potential to be more with just a few minor tweaks though. If you can fit 2 bottles of water, and fit a decently sized tripod, then you may have a winner. Maybe move the side access to the top, then add a second pouch to the side. Also bring back the front tripod holder.

I think this particular model has been discontinued, but Lowepro has other sizes available. I recently purchased the Flipside 500 AW II because I needed more space. I cover a lot of ground many days doing outdoor and wildlife photography. I purchased this pack hoping it would hold two Sony full size mirrorless cameras with lens attached (lens- Sony 200-600mm, Sony 16-35mm or 24-240mm). I was pleasantly surprised how well everything fit and room for a third lens and other accessories including a full size carbon tripod on the outside. I purchased this pack hoping it would hold two Sony full size mirrorless cameras with lens attached (lens- Sony 200-600mm, Sony 16-35mm or 24-240mm). I was pleasantly surprised how well everything fit and room for a third lens and other accessories including a full size carbon tripod on the outside. I sometimes carry as much as 25 pounds including everything in the pack and it is very well padded and comfortable to carry for whatever distance I need to go.. I would highly recommend the pack for design, build quality and most important, comfort at a very reasonable price.

I'm a 15 year old photographer and I recently went to B&H for a new bag to hold all my gear. Previously, I was using a Nikon Bag that looked like a big lunchbox. After asking the staff and looking for myself, I fell upon a used version of this bag and was very impressed. As I was about to buy the used, I realized that I should just buy new just because I still wanted to invest in higher quality gear.The newer bag definitely looked nicer and had all of the straps attached. Everything in and on this bag has a use and won't be additional weight. Most of it can be removed or customized to your exact liking, and this makes it so great. I fit a Nikon D3300 with a small 18-55mm lens and a 55-300mm. I also carry a tripod which fits right down the middle of the bag, but ... MoreI'm a 15 year old photographer and I recently went to B&H for a new bag to hold all my gear. Previously, I was using a Nikon Bag that looked like a big lunchbox. After asking the staff and looking for myself, I fell upon a used version of this bag and was very impressed. As I was about to buy the used, I realized that I should just buy new just because I still wanted to invest in higher quality gear.The newer bag definitely looked nicer and had all of the straps attached. Everything in and on this bag has a use and won't be additional weight. Most of it can be removed or customized to your exact liking, and this makes it so great. I fit a Nikon D3300 with a small 18-55mm lens and a 55-300mm. I also carry a tripod which fits right down the middle of the bag, but can also fit in the stretchy holder on the outside of the bag. That can also be a cupholder. The bag also has a laptop holder that can fit around 22' from what I hear, but for me, a Chromebook fits in there just right. There is also a front pocket that is good for papers, pens, misc. Straps work perfectly and waist straps can simply be taken off and placed back on whenever. There is a side zipper that opens up to a compartment so that you can reach whatever you put in there without having to place the bag down and unzip it from the back.All in all, 10/10 bag and I have not been disappointed at all.
I don't get the skepticism from some reviewers here. This is one hell of a camera bag, fitting all sorts of combinations of camera gear. I didn't strictly need the depth of the 400 (advertised to accommodate a camera with a portrait grip) but it definitely comes in handy, allowing me to lay my medium-sized DSLR camera in the bag however I want. Importantly there's more than enough space for my Nikkor AF-S 200-500mm f/5.6 with the hood on in reverse and the tripod mount attached. I also appreciate the side access compartment, though I'd have liked a higher quality zipper here. (The main zippers are great.) The modular internal dividers are robust but not too thick; I could have used a couple extras, though, and maybe a couple more placement options. I could have used ... The bag feels good on your back, like an OK-quality hiking bag, and the strap adjustment system is pretty good (easy and solid-feeling). The rear bumpers and the extra handle (vertical between the straps) are appreciated too. Finally, I have to say, the bag looks really good. Nice clean lines.For $200, this bag is a good buy; for $120 it's a steal.
