I use these water-soluble crayons to make monoprints-by drawing on Duralar then printing with dampened paper. I have compared the Lyra water soluble graphite crayons to Generals Wash pencils and powdered water soluble graphite. The Lyra wins hands-down- Nice, solid, dense graphite deposit. Make no mistake, though...you can tell it is graphite as opposed to a regular water-soluble crayon. I like the 9-B especially. I can draw and dilute the marks so that hey look like washes

Love using these graphite crayons to give more dimension to my collage and mixed media work. A Spritz of water makes it move which allows for blending and transparency

If that's what you want, try those too. However, the Aquarelles are nearly waterproof after wetting. Once they have dried, you need tough paper to erase or lift those marks. These LYRA graphite pencils leave graphite, so you can still erase, lift and smudge after wetting. They are easy to fix with any decent fixative. That makes them terrific for grisailles. They also work well on gessoed panels or canvas, and on those substrates they lift or erase even more easily.Plus they are just FUN! Fast and furious sketching with a little water on a brush produces strong values with ease. If you need to adjust anything, an eraser and / or some water-lifting allows edge-control, blending, gradients, highlights, etc.Use these on toned paper with an opaque white for dramatic effects!Cheap, strong, easy, FAST, long-lasting, reliable, versatile, BOLD.If you are tired of wimpy drawings, get a dark one, like the 9B.It's the best investment under 2 bucks any artist can make.

Fun!
19 July 2015

This review is for the watersoluble crayons, which I think are really nice. I prefer to wet a brush & touch the brush to the crayon, then add more water or graphite to a little ceramic dish to tweak my values. The 2B & 6B are the smoothest as far as solubility. The 9B is a tad on the grainy side, but I think this has more to do with the paper I use it on -- so take that opinion with a grain of salt. The only paper I have lying around at the moment that can accept wet media is Arches Oil Paper, which has some texture to it. That's ok; I like the visual interest. I'm sure these would flow as pretty as you please on cold press or hot press. These crayons might also be helpful for some w/c painters in planning out compositions as well.I don't know how often I'll use ... MoreThis review is for the watersoluble crayons, which I think are really nice. Enjoy!

Great crayons!
20 December 2020

It's hard to find these crayons individually. I'm glad I was able to get these. Sometimes my hands cannot hold a pencil for a long time without feeling cramped and achy, and these pencils are nice when you just want to do a rough sketch or add shadows without using up pencil lead. They react very well with water, it creates a beautiful wash. I wish they added more grades, like 2B, 4B, etc.

I buy this product again and again

Students love these when they want to work larger and maintain a gestural line. Leaves a fairly dark, rich mark. For more bold marking making and/or little hands.

My clumsy hands can use these just great
21 March 2020

Having experienced polio as a child, my hands cannot easily hold much of anything. Yet, the thicker Lyra Graphites have opened the world of drawing for me. I am now able to draw. Perhaps this might be challenging to others to understand, I am THRILLED to be able to finally draw. All 3 of the available hardnesses: HB2, HB6 and HB9 present strong and consistent markings. HOW grateful I am for these incredible graphites for using in all of my artworks! Thanks!

Neat tool, feels great in my hand
2 March 2016

I purchased one of the waterproof (6B) and water soluble (9B) graphite crayons for mark making on my acrylic paintings. Even the 9B (softest) doesn't really make a very dark mark. With time and use the crayon will wear down to a fatter mark or the non-pointy end could be used to create a fat line/mark. The soluble crayon is fun because when you paint over it smears like watercolor crayons (except much easier since there is no wax binder) or if you go over it lightly with matte medium it will stabilize the line and darken it greatly. The waterproof crayon darkens a bit and smears a little with matte medium/paint but it is not that different than my regular graphite pencils. They both feel great to hold/draw with and they glide across the paper/dried paint easily ... MoreI purchased one of the waterproof (6B) and water soluble (9B) graphite crayons for mark making on my acrylic paintings. It is a unique product in the size and shape and I am enjoying playing with them for there tactile properties more than anything.

The darkest graphite that goes on smoothly
15 December 2016

I have tried many types of graphite in different levels of softness, and Lyra is my brand. The watersolube is perfect for making super rich and textured marks. With other brands each graphite stick behaves differently, yet Lyra is super consistent and even after a few years of sitting it maintains the same quality.Typically I apply many layers, pressing very hard and the results are incredible. Most think it looks like sumi ink.

VERY smooth, lovely heft, nice thick bold lines
24 October 2016

I'm a fan of strong, bold lines from pencils that feel good in my hand. These Lyra graphite crayons really fit the bill.Fat strong lines. Very dense, too -- feels great in the hand (not like a wood-case pencil that you feel might fly away if you sneeze at it). The paper *should* prevent it from breaking if I ever drop one, but so far neither me, or my 6-year-old, or my roommate's cats have tested this hypothesis.I prefer the softer grades. I bought about a dozen the last time they went on sale, and big as these things are, that'll probably last me a good long time.
