Good strong material which resists damage when bush bashing. But my pack squeaks, which is a bit of a pain when hunting. The drink bottle holders are difficult to remove the bottle yourself when the pack is on. And the big front pocket is a bit tricky to use. But overall its still a great fitting pack which will last decades of regular use.

I bought the 75L version so everything would fit inside the pack instead of strapping items to the outside of my old 65L pack. For solo hiking where I can’t load share the 75L fit all of my gear.Plenty of straps to fasten the pack for a comfortable load that doesn’t move around and put you off balance.I would like the pack to have a zipped pocket on the waist strap for easy access to snacks or phone.Only done 2 days hiking with the pack so far but it seems pretty tough and I hope to have it for a long time to come.

The design hasn’t changed for the Cascade in decades, which i think is a great thing. “If it ain’t broke…”Very tough, without the weight, simple construction, so less chance of a major issue, and logical pockets. The only small issue is when it rains, the water can trickle down the sides into the side pockets. These pockets are water proof, so they fill and the water is then encouraged to drop into the main compartment. I made an easy (if a little ugly) fix - cut a little hole in the base of the pockets to let them drain.Apart from that, I love the pack!

Absolutely love this pack, having used it in mostly alpine environments. The extra features aren't too excessive or overkill. I have used this on an ice climbing trip so it held all my gear and axes nicely. The 75 Litre option might be better if going on a more solo and technical trip as my climbing gear did take up some space. The interior remained dry during snow, only the interior of the lid was damp, however I believe this was due to condensation from a cold water bottle. My only issue with the pack is the zipper on the bottom compartment can be very fiddly and doesn't close or open very well, especially with cold hands. Overall, very impressed. I am 178cm and use a size 2 which is perfect. There is room behind the harness to add a small seat cut from foam ... MoreAbsolutely love this pack, having used it in mostly alpine environments. Such a great pack. This is my second one as I accidentally bought one with too big a frame online about 10 years ago. Took my previous one around the world for 10 months and it held up well to lots of use. Having looked at all the options again recently I do think this is the best pack on the market. So good having a durable canvas and not having to deal with a rain cover. 75L is ideal as I’m never trying to squeeze gear in or the things to the outside. Great to see the little improvements that have been made between my previous pack and the ones now on sale. In case it’s helpful (as I spent a long time deliberating which size to get for myself) I’m a 173 cm female and fit a size 1.
I’ve had the cascade for a few months now and feel pretty good doing a decent review except for long term durability. The material is pretty water resistant and durable, though mine has a coupe of small tears, probably where it got scraped along sharp rocks recently. It is also well reinforced on the bottom of the pack. The shoulder straps are wide and well padded and the hip belt is good too, although with the belt I notice I re-tighten after lunch breaks as it seems to slip ever-so-slightly (not sure any pack escapes this and it’s far from a problem). The back padding is also well placed. The bottom access works well when there’s nothing in the pack but can be a bit annoying to close when there is stuff in there. The bottom divider works as intended. The bottom divider works as intended. Top access with the pull tab works very nicely. The side-opening pocket on the side opposite the straps works really nicely for providing fast access to waterproof jacket and over-trou but work more like an internal divider for the main compartment than extra volume, thus it can be a little tight squeezing both items in there if the main compartment is already stuffed with gear. The top pocket on the lid is a good size but seems to snag more frequently than you’d expect on the cover flap, it’s also positioned more towards the middle of the pocket which means you can reach stuff at the back without pulling out everything in front. You can also fit more stuff in the pocket under the top flap. The side straps are perfect for poles or a rifle. On a recent 5 day trip I was able to fit a good amount of food plus tent, waterproofs, cold weather additions like mitts and heavy down jacket, along with hunting optics without overloading the pack. The last day was a full 20km with a lot of vertical gain. Pack weight was 20-25kg and the pack carried really comfortably (as good as you can get with that much weight). The only issue that arose was that the securing buckle for the strap height adjustment on the frame seemed to slip significantly throughout this long day. This meant the right strap wound up a full 5cm higher than it should’ve been which forced me to continually pull that strap back onto my shoulder as it slipped off.Overall a really good pack, carries heavy loads really well with a good material and sensible design features. Just need to work out how to stop that frame slippage.
I like pretty much everything about this pack, it's comfortable, hardy, fits well. Unfortunately I have found when getting into the 30-35kg+ load weight (carrying meat out on hunts) the thin straps and light frame can't cope properly. The waist belt can't seem to hold the weight on your hips (pulled tight as possible sitting on my hips) and it all ends up on the thin straps digging into your shoulders. I believe that's due to the rigidity of the frame not being designed for that sort of weight. I'm a bit gutted because I do love it for anything under 30kg but will likely have to move to a tatonka or similar heavier duty pack with a more rigid frame and wider straps if I can't make it work.
Nice and comfortable pack, upgraded from my last Macpac pack. Love the side pockets and ability to separate the bottom section from wet gear etc (although the zip is very difficult to use when the pack is full). Only used for a few overnighters, looking forward to a week hike in Tassie soon
My '99 bought Cascade has had a hammering in Tassie walking. One harness strap has been exchanged. Heavyish at 3kg but i'm happy. Today's colours are set for style before safety. Come the day I can order one in canary yellow for the same price. White-outs are as common in NZ as Tassie i'm sure.
I went from my trusty Ascent to one of these because of the harness. This is a great harness compared to the harness on the Ascent.I enjoy the zip loops and mesh side pockets and small pocket under the lid.And still made out of a kick arse fabric for tough NZ conditions.Where this pack could be improved...…..For some reason there is more volume at the top than the bottom, meaning bad things for centre of gravity.Having a zip at the bottom so as to access things at the bottom of the pack? doesn't make sense when you want your things to stay dry inside, just pack your pack sensibly so as the things at the bottom you wont need until the end of the day.The biggest thing I probably miss from the Ascent is the extra extension on the lid, so as you can put more stuff ... MoreI went from my trusty Ascent to one of these because of the harness.
