After a few hours' skiing in intermittent rain, I found that items in the (zipped up) pockets were soaking wet. More concerningly, pretty much the whole of my front, inside the jacket, was wet. My arms, shoulders and back were dry, so the fabric seems to have worked well. But the front zip allowed water to seep in. I should perhaps mention the front zip has an internal storm-flap but not an external one. On a multi-day trip, water seeping through the front zip would be at best a nuisance. By comparison, I have not had this problem on previous waterproof jackets over the past 15 years or more. I have always considered a top-notch waterproof jacket to be one of my most essential items in the outdoors - hence buying this one. But in light of my recent experience, I don't feel I can recommend this jacket in its current form. I do see, however, on a bit of googling, that YKK produce 'Aquaseal' zips as well as 'Aquaguard' zips. YKK describe 'Aquaseal' as waterproof, and Aquaguard, by contrast, as 'water repellent'. My recent experience leads me to the view that Aquaguard zips are not 'highly water resistant' as Macpac says, and are not suitable for a top-of the-range all-weather mountain jacket. The XXXL sizing is excellent and Macpac remains one of the few brands I can wear comfortably and purchase online knowing their sizing is consistent. The garment itself is well made and well and truly does the job. It's already kept me dry whilst out fishing so it comes heartily recommended.

I would not buy this jacket again, having had it for just on 2 years, from day 1 everything in the pockets would always get wet, and in heavy rain they will fill with water as the pockets are not seam sealed from the outside, so while the jacket is seam sealed to the inside the design just provides the pockets as part of the outside layers and hence just fill with water. So don't expect anything you put in them to stay dry. It is a design flaw I just cannot understand, do they actually test these anymore? The main front zip has failed after 2 years and is costing $110 to replace, not covered under any warrantee. Not sure about the expectations of life, but good YKK zips should not fail after 2yrs should they? I have washed and treated with DWR at least twice in its life, as I battled trying to maintain its usefulness. Even took it on myself to seam seal the pockets to keep items dry. This is not a high-end jacket, not worth the money. Sad really as Macpac was once a dependable brand, has dropped to such poor quality products.
What can I say, the Prophet rain coat is great. Super light to carry in a backpack, easy to fold up into its hood and pack.The Prophet is a quality rain coat with sealed zippers, multiple pockets that stay dry and an excellent fit, but it is a little smaller than its size indicates. I’m 182cm (6’) solid frame and the 2XL is a good fit.This jacket is quality through and through, covers your but, keeps you dry and the wind out, and has more options to tighten the fit than most people will ever use, including breather zips under the arms, this jacket will last a very long time. You might think it’s a little expensive, but like I said it’s a quality jacket and it ticks all the boxes for everyday use in inclement weather and perfect for hiking.
Am doing the Te Araroa trail (2022-23) and took this jacket along as a lighter jacket. Am not all happy with it's performance. It does not keep me dry. Usually, my front and arms are wet through after an hour or so of heavy rain. Am thinking of ditching it in favour of a Gortex alternative. While perhaps no jacket can keep me fully dry, this jacket is not one I'd recommend for serious alpine or mountain activities.
I was very excited to get such a -as I thought- great jacket for my birthday but that changed after wearing it twice in heavy rain. Each time the pockets filled up with water as never experienced with any other jacket. For this price ($649) I expected a lot more! Very disappointed, I took it to Macpac but was told, after assessing it, there was nothing they could do. The zippers were not waterproof because it was an Alpine jacket! However, the advertisement says (and it was bought as) a rain jacket. I have only worn the jacket about 5 times but wanted it for my walking in the European Alps, for which it will be pretty useless. This will be the last jacket I ever buy at Macpac.

The lightweight design of this jacket is exceptional, as are all the features. However, for some strange reason, this particular jacket made by Macpac seems to be designed for an incredibly athletic Gibbon, with incredibly long arms and a seemingly narrow waist. I 'fit' comfortably several other Macpac 2XL garments, however this particular Prophet Rain Jacket (Alpine) only sells this jacket up to size 2XL (eg. no 3XL size in this model). Highly recommend you try one on before purchasing. Will Macpac ever be making this exceptional jacket in 3XL sizes? This is an amazing jacket, it has had a real workout in the Auckland weather over the last fortnight.Hood is awesome with enough room for a cap and the front edge holds in place with the internal metal wire. Added bonus was buying online during boxing day sale.
I use this jacket as an alpine shell for climbing, ski touring, general mountaineering in NZ. My brother also has the same jacket for the same use - he gives it a similar review to me. I think it’s a genuinely dialled in alpine product - the high collar and hood are really well cut, and work well with other layers and helmets - body cut has a bit of length so it sits under harness, and has enough room to layer up, without it being boxy - clinch cords and zips are all easily handled - no excess features you don’t need - fabric is durable and breathes acceptably. Compared to the other big brands top tier alpine shells this is a strong competitor at a really good price - Macpac please don’t go and change it!
