I wear an outdoor research echo quarter zip underneath and it fits well enough. If I lived in New Zealand not Nova Scotia I might want to try an extra large and tailor the sleeves. It is super warm and light. My echo plus nitro plus an enlightened equipment Copperfield wind shirt is all I'll need from late spring to mid fall. Eliminating my puffy. Plus the nitro will be my sleep top. Takes a lot of ounces out of my pack. Didn't think I would like the pocket but it's a nice detail though I would never carry anything in it. The polartec alpha direct fabric is amazing, light and warm and for the price point, the Nitro is a good entry point.However..since I've started buying the polartec alpha direct fabric and making my own pullover hoody, I have realised how uncomfortable the Nitro is for me.1. The sleeves don't have stretch and as a climber, I struggle to pull it up over my forearm.2. The hood access is annoying and uncomfortable. Especially if you've got a helmet on and trying to put this on.3. The cut along the arms and body is slim. I previously didn't think so however since making my own, I've realised how snug it is and it's not very comfortable.4. As a climber, the torso length is too short. Its shorter than most of my t shirts and will pull out of a harness when I raise ... MoreThe polartec alpha direct fabric is amazing, light and warm and for the price point, the Nitro is a good entry point.However..since I've started buying the polartec alpha direct fabric and making my own pullover hoody, I have realised how uncomfortable the Nitro is for me.1. I have used this top in the mountains, on tramps and during packrafting trips in the back country of NZ. Firstly, I love hoodies. This top is very warm for its weight, sure it lets in the wind but in a way the wind offsets the warmth and makes for a great top to wear when there is a cold breeze and you are working hard or running. Put a wind breaker over the top and it works perfectly. Its a top that you kind of need to take care of, eg: bush bashing with it on won't work very well at all. I have sewn in a half zip to make it a pullover. I haven't really used the pocket provided except for some random things. Last trip I wore it in the rain, it still kept me warm and when it came to drying it out it dried out in no time, like seriously no time at all. Drop the ... MoreI have used this top in the mountains, on tramps and during packrafting trips in the back country of NZ. Firstly, I love hoodies. It's become essential equipment. Light warm. Perfect midlayer for hiking. The large weave means that when you're moving there's lots of airflow. When you stop out of the wind, or put on another layer, the large weave means lots of insulating airpockets form. It sizes short in the body and neck/hood. Arms plenty long as may be seen from the photo. They size on arm length, so size up. I'm usually a large size. I find the 2XL fits well. I find the pocket perfect for my 6.1" phone camera and glasses.
This top is a must have for anybody who likes to layer when active outdoors.Under a wind protective layer this keeps you very warm. When you're about to break a sweat, take the top layer off, allowing the breeze gets straight through, letting you dump heat immediately. Over a base layer I find this top doesn't take on odours, which reduces the need to wash. The material has its obviously durability weaknesses, but you know what you are getting when you purchase alpha direct material products.Personally I think the top would be nicer without the chest pocket (like the women's style) as the pocket isn't particularly useful for anything more than a credit card. Keys cause obvious deformation in the thin material.
Received it about a week ago and wore it almost daily since then in mild and cool conditions (–3 to +15 °C). Very pleased so far. It runs small, if you plan to put it over more than a thin baselayer you need to size up. The length of the sleeves is generous but not too much. The thumb loops are not necessary in my opinion and even a bit annoying since they pop out every now and then and get in the way with gloves. I cut them off eventually. The material is more durable than I expected but it is certainly not suitable for bushwhacking. The breathability is breathtaking (pun intended). That means you need to cover it when it's getting windy. Together with a breathable windbreaker this is more comfortable than a midweight fleece but equally warm and much lighter. The fabric loses small amounts of insulation that clings to my merino baselayer. I hope this will cease after a couple of laundry cycles. As others mentioned before I would ditch the pocket. Also: why is the pocket glued AND sewn on? If I could make wishes I would ask for 3 cm more length (because the shirt rides up easily on its own) and a version without hood. Crew neck would do, a zippered version would be weighed down disproportionately by a zipper.
Purchased for lightweight long distance hiking as a mid layer. Obviously very lightweight and surprisingly warm when coupled with a thin windproof layer over the top. Very breathable almost a modern string vest material. Super soft so very good to wear even to sleep in.I’ve washed mine by hand and like most lightweight gear it needs looking after to avoid wear and tear. Not impressed with the sizing, a friend purchased an XL in Aus posted it over to me in only to find it was too small - I’m normally a large sometimes an XL. Had to then buy another online in an XXL with the eye watering shipping costs. I can get stuff shipped from China for £5 but I begrudge paying nearly as much for the shipping as the item costs. The XXL fits ok except now the arms are long, I ... MorePurchased for lightweight long distance hiking as a mid layer. Breathable yet warm, great as a mid-layer during high output activities when the weather is colder. Performs exactly as I expected based on reviews of Polartec alpha direct layers. Pair with a shell/windbreaker and you're good to go in windy conditionsDefinitely size up if you have an athletic to heavier build. I'm 70kg, 5'9 and usually wear Macpac small gear for an athletic fit, but got this in a medium which is perfect
Finally got my hands on one of these and it's amazing. Unbeatable warmth to weight - it won't fully replace your puffer jacket but it's a decent warm layer option for summer, especially under a shell jacket. Though it's a delicate, niche bit of kit and not for everybody.Sizing - It definitely runs small. I normally jump between small and medium (172 cm, 70 kg, male), went with medium for the Nitro and I'd say it's perfect for a snug midlayer.I find the chest pocket quite nifty despite the (minor) weight penalty, and I like the blue (though the new colours are cool). It's actually tidy enough that I've worn it to a (dimly lit) pub and not felt toooo out of place. My only gripe is that the wrist cuffs are very tight and not at all stretchy, so I have to be super ... MoreFinally got my hands on one of these and it's amazing. Still giving it 5 stars for comfort, warmth, weight and value.
Alpha Direct is a fabric that you really have to try to understand, in the shop it's featherlite and seems impossible that it'll keep you warm, yet crank up the hood on this badboy and you'll be toasty in no time! I've found like others that it's solidly a mid layer garment - if it's windy, then you really need a shell layer to keep the cold out. But recently on a 4 day hike I found that you can wear this as a mid layer while hiking too, and becuase the material is warm and breathes so well it's excellent when you're on the move.I also found that if you want to boost the warmth at night then this hoodie is perfect. The hood moves with you as your turn over, and really REALLY increases your core temperature. I'm completely sold on it.NB: This stuff sux around velcro.... and you have to baby it a bit - it's not for bush bashing! But other than those things this stuff is amazing.
