Makita DHP484 is a compact little combi. I bought one to replace an obsolete but still working DHP459 on which the front bearing was slopping about (my fault, changing the chuck without using an impact driver) The 484 is just so sweet in comparison, it will start at a much slower speed and runs smoothly, it is also shorter and yet has a metal gearbox. I know it has a higher price point relative to the much older 459 (and its modern equivalent) but it’s worth it. I have a chunky DHP481 for the tough jobs but this is so much lighter and neater that it’s usually my first choice. It doesn’t pretend to be water and dust proof, and that might affect your choice, but if that’s not an issue for you, it’s no contest.

Amazing drill, best ive owned. One of most expensive unfortunately but at least it will last. Always go brushless. The 2 5 amp batteries and charger alone make it worth it. The torque settings are amazing too

The drill feels very powerful. The mode selection ring is very stiff. The device is quite heavy with the supplied 5Ah battery but fits comfortably in the hand.

Replaced my 14 year old Makita with this - its simply a better version in every respect. You will be impressed. The only negative is the box. Its purely plastic latches (vs previous metal) are flimsy and difficult to lock down - so definitely wont last long. Its also large and effectively empty - so yes its flexible/future proof ... but if you just have a drill, a coupe, of batteries, some drill bits, it is still 60% empty. Use of an old towel is the answer. So 9/10 overall because of the box.
This drill is probably one of the best tools I have owned, it was a gift from my girlfriend and was put to immediate use on a home extension. The first thing I was really impressed with was the battery life, I was getting a full day out of one charge. On the drill settings, this thing goes, the torque is great and it easily out performs any of my previous drills. On screw setting however, the clutch mechanism kicks in far too early and it was struggling to put 2 inch screws into pine! Not that big an issue, I just changed it to drill setting and it easily powered in everything I needed screwing/drilling. Also, I find that my hand keeps pushing the forward/reverse switch when applying a lot of pressure, this might just be me, but I have never had this problem with ... MoreThis drill is probably one of the best tools I have owned, it was a gift from my girlfriend and was put to immediate use on a home extension. Overall, a great quality drill let down by minor flaws.
My second Makita drill and now one of several other Makita tools using the brand batteries. Previous drill still works despite being seriously abused by me for 4 years, however, I wanted one with a little extra torque hence the 484. It is well balanced, beautifully constructed and essentially everything fits, clicks, turns and works. I don't expect any issues with it but there are lots of repair shops for this brand and replacement parts are simple to get. I saw a little funny vid recently saying that Makita was for DIY Dave, well the joiners in my area use Makita and having helped them out on occasion I can say those tools are seriously tested so if they use them Makita a good enough for me. 5ah batteries are superb and my 4 year old 3ah versions still hold charge ... MoreMy second Makita drill and now one of several other Makita tools using the brand batteries. Quality combi drill, well made and, at time of purchase was a great deal! More than adequate torque for any average DIY job. Very pleased with the purchase.
Powerful compact performer with batteries that last quite a long while. Used it for drilling into wood and brick wall, applying screws and it did not disappoint. The carry box is a little bit of a let down, mainly the cheap liking plastic insert. Overall happy with my purchase. Toolzone were faultless
Great piece of kit. Lightweight and plenty of power for drilling and driving.Have used Makita tools both cordless and mains powered at work over many years.Wouldn’t hesitate to recommend.
This drill was a replacement for an older type battery drill. As I only use the drill for DIY I found it hard to run the batteries down therebye reducing the battery life. The new batteries work completely differently and do not like to be fully discharged, thus allowing me to store the drill away until required. The drill itself is small, light and very powerful. I am very pleased with both the drill and battery and would recommend it to both the professional and DIY user
