Food cupboard convenience ... and tasty!

I have been buying this for years, as it is such an easy way to add protein to a meal and keeps for ages in the cupboard as a standby. One of our favourite ways is to make a kind of vegan mushroom and chestnut bourguignon. Saute down some mushrooms in a pan, and onions if you like. Thrown in some ready-cooked chestnuts and then add torn or cut up pieces of this tofu to warm through. Add a splash of extra water if more gravy is needed, then get it simmering and stir in some cornflour paste or gravy granules to thicken. Serve with mash and veg - so easy and quick! I tend to buy in bulk which works out much better value than single cans on here.

I was a bit dubious about tofu from a can, but this is great! Its got an umami/salty/sweet flavour and is flaky/layered. Its surprisingly similar in flavour and texture to inari pockets if you like those!

Ok so I tried this about 7 years ago and it was gross, I just tried it straight from the can. In more recent years, I've been buying braised tofu from Chinese supermarkets, you get twice as much for half the price of this. However, when I can't get to those supermarkets, this is a great alternative. I rinse it in cold water to remove the liquid its in (personally don't like that taste of that liquid), squeeze out the water with kitchen towel, open the big pieces out and fry in some sesame oil until crisp. I then put it into a bao bun, Chinese style pancake or wrap with hoisin sauce, cucumber and spring onion. Tastes incredible and a great texture that way - the best vegan mock duck alternative. One of the best tofu products on the market
24 March 2021

Love this product, I have had it for years and was very disappointed when Holland and Barret stopped selling it. Great to know I can buy online. It is excellent in a salad, cooked as part of a stir-fry or straight our of the tin, great flavour, good texture

Perfect with any meal
5 December 2020

Heat in a pan with the lid on, with its own juice out of the tin. The contents are enough for 2 people. Our family has enjoyed this for two decades. It's perfect with any meal - on top of pasta dishes, on the side of jacket potatoes, with a rice/veggie stir fry. We love the texture and the flavour. Excellent complete protein source, with amino acids - with zero saturated fats that you get from animal protein. A must have! So glad Ocado stocks it. Thank you Ocado!

Taste like mock duck, keep one in cupboard
2 November 2019

I can understand maybe some people wouldnt expect tofu has such texture but it actually tastes a bit like Chinese mock duck and I am used to that. Wouldnt recommend to eat it just out of the tin but it would be great in a stew, most tofu, even the firm ones, wouldnt work in a stew but this would work very well as it wont break down and it can absorb all the nice juice and sauce. I think the texture can be improved but it's a nice thing to keep in the cupboard.

Tasted better than it looked.
6 November 2016

I have never tried tofu before, so when I opened this and it looked like brains in gravy I was a bit apprehensive. There was no way I was going to eat it cold, so I googled how to cook it. I found one bit of advice that said drain and squeeze off the excess oil, then bung it in the oven for 25 mins on 200c. What came back out the oven resembled crispy duck, and had a crispy meaty texture that could easily have passed as duck. It tasted mildly sweet and was very pleasant. So much nicer than I had thought it would be. Will buy again.

Vegan Fakeaway

A few oriental restaurants Ive visited have used something similar to this as a meat substitute for vegetarians/ vegans. I drained most of the liquid away before cooking, but next time will try to squeeze more out. I dry-cooked it in my wok (its got some oil already in it) and added seasoning and garlic powder (run out of 5-spice). Sliced spring onion, hoisin and stuffed into pancakes! Quick dinner after getting home late. Good.

So delicious. Easy to use. Just open the tin and heat.. I served it as a topping on noodles and veg with sweet potato and spinach curry. So tasty. Has a sweet and sour flavour. So much easier than trying to put flavour into normal plain tofu. A bit salty but hey delicious.
