I am not a highly skilled musician and that had always contributed to me not buying a standard series Martin. After playing this guitar for about a month I now realize that that was a mistake. The neck feels better than any acoustic guitar that I have played. I like the sound of the non gloss mahogany. It is warm and projects nicely when finger picking with or without picks. The sound stays together no matter how aggressively the guitar is strummed. I will be playing this guitar everyday for as long I am able. Hopefully my children will take it from there.

Incredible

I am in my Sixties, and have played guitar since my early teens. I have rarely played such a beautifully balanced and full sounding instrument. I am wondering if I just was fortunate or if the majority of D-18's sounds this heavenly? Of all the high end guitars I have and do own, this is now my favorite.

It's even better than I imagined.

Up until about two months ago, I was convinced that Mahogany guitars were inferior to Rosewood guitars and that the ONLY thing that would satisfy me was a Martin HD-28. The main reason that I felt this way was that I had never had the opportunity to sit with any high end dreadnought, either Rosewood Mahogany, for more than just a few minutes, that coupled with the misguided purchase of two lower priced Mahogany dreads, really put me off. I got the opportunity about two months ago to play a few Martin dreads, both Rosewood and Mahogany, and came away with a severe case of Martin D-18 G.A.S. About a 90 minute session in a local music store acoustic room was all it took. Then the announcement of the D-18 Satin and it was all over but the shouting. About a 90 minute session in a local music store acoustic room was all it took. Then the announcement of the D-18 Satin and it was all over but the shouting. Things that I like are the Grover tuners and the all black fretboard. Is it dyed or natural? I don't care, it's beautiful. Yes, I like the satin finish, not so much on the top, but on the sides and back it really works! It accentuates the grain of the Mahogany. As to the top, the spruce does have a little bit of character to it. It's not bearclawed or flamed or anything fancy, but it has nice straight grain with no dark mineral streaks and when the light is just right, you can see some character in the top because the shading doesn't cover it up. I like the low bling level, but they should have kept the tortoiseshell binding and thank goodness the pick guard is tortoise.

Firstly, kudos to the good people at G.C. They were superman fast, courteous and friendly. THANKS!I play old time bluegrass and gospel and Scotts/Irish fiddle tunes. I have had the D-18 for two months now and I play it daily. It is already starting to ope; up. Wow! The Amber Burst finish did not impress me, and I wish that Martin still used the faux tortoise binding, but I'm not sending it back! Everything else about this guitar just knocks my socks off. The satin finish is the right choice for Mahogany. At least the way Martin is doing it, it is. It has the Grover tuners on it that I like a lot better than the Japanese Gotohs. The fretboard is solid black and nothing rubs off on the cleaning towel when it is wiped down. So either Martin has some new and improved ... MoreFirstly, kudos to the good people at G.C. So either Martin has some new and improved dye that won't rub off or they found a stash of all black Ebony. Either way the guitar is a study in understated elegance. It comes with Martin Pb 13-56 on it and that seems to be the right gauge and materials. I'm doing a string search for it right now, but I've only just gotten started, and this may take a while. O.K., so how does it sound? The D-18 is no ordinary guitar. It is a LEGEND in some circles, and this one is exactly the D-18 that you have always heard about. It is loud. It has all the bass you can handle. It will play up the neck until you run out of frets. The mid-tones stand out clearly with sharp definition between notes. Just the right combination of sustain and decay. The neck is a very comfortable shallow "C".
