Setup was difficult, as the QR code took me to a strange website, so all setup had to be done through the remote on the TV. After getting the device setup, I thought everything was going to be great, but that is where additional problems started. I was not able to get Hulu to ever load on the device. It would just freeze, then kick me back to the Home Screen. It also would lose my WiFi connection every couple of minutes, then reconnect after about 20 seconds. It's a mixed bag, but I suppose I'm more of a "power user" in that I use these devices for more than just streaming from apps.PROS for ONN vs Firestick- Google TV is much better than the stock FireOS.- Access to the Google Play Store.- You can install custom launchers, and remap your remote buttons with a 3rd party app.- The TV automatically turns off when the the ONN box goes in sleep mode. The Firestick never turns off your TV automatically, it just goes to a blank screen, eating electricity.- Easily expand internal storage with a USB drive (and required adapters)- The price. Great deal for a 4K-capable device.CONS for ONN 4K vs. Firestick- Pretty terrible bluetooth range and signal. I can block the signal to my earbud by putting my hand over my ear, or turning my head a certain way. The Firestick had the worst BT range of all my devices until I bought the ONN. I can't even leave the room I'm in without immediately losing the signal.- I need to use a USB mouse to click "PAIR" every single time I'm trying to pair a new bluetooth device. For some reason the remote stops working at that point in the pairing process.- The lack of a menu button, as well as dedicated REW, PLAY, and FF buttons will take a while to get used to. It really affects the way I use certain applications. It turns things that used to take one click into 3-4 clicks plus navigation, or in the case of the missing MENU button, can limit functionality completely.- A bit laggier than both the FS4K and FS4KMAX.Still, unbeatable for the price, and probably more than adequate for the vast majority of users. The bluetooth is a real issue though. This is my 2nd ONN device (I returned the first one) and they both had weak bluetooth signal, as well as the pairing issue. I don't think most people will think to try a USB mouse, and will just give up trying using BT headphones.
This is definitely a decent alternative to ghe $49.99 Chromecast with Google TV, however, if you do have the extra $30 to splurge... definitely buy the Google brand. this Android TV does claim 4K streaming, however it very much struggles on most 4K content. the box gets hot and sometimes the content won't even load because the processor cant handle it... 1440p seems to be very much doable on the box, however it still heats up with prolonged 2K streaming. 1080p HD is definitely this boxes sweet spot and it should be marketed as such. and the ONN. I know ONN. is launching a "Pro" version this year (within a few days of this review in fact) that is the same price as the Chromecast with Google TV... im sorry, but unless it has the exact same processor and features. DO NOT BUY IT. ONN is known to use cheaper parts to compensate for a bigger profit... they are not worth the risk.
