I have been a proud owner of Maui Jim Sunglasses for over 20 years. The quality of the frames and lenses were unsurpassed, Originally the company stood behind the frames for life, and replaced scratched or cracked lenses for a reasonable fee. I own 4 pairs of Maui Jim sunglasses and only had 1 pair of frames needing repair, and replaced the lenses as time took its toll.Recently, during this pandemic, 3 of my 4 sunglasses had hinges either break or pull out of the plastic. Bad luck on my part. I can’t fault the glasses. Unfortunately my sunglasses were discontinued and could no longer be repaired. So I decided to purchase a new Big Wave pair of Maui Jim’s.I am thoroughly disappointed. The frames that had previously been manufactured from a sturdy high quality plastic with spring loaded hinges are now constructed from a cheap thin plastic with only a simple single pin hinge. The lenses are only a fraction of the thickness of the original lenses, making them much more susceptible to breakage. I now regret recommending Maui Jim sunglasses to all of my friends and family They are now no more than a cheap Chinese knockoff of their former impeccable style and durability. It is hard for me to believe that this thoroughly American icon was willing to give up on its reputation of unsurpassed quality and durability. I am sorry to report that they have evolved into an unsurpassed rip off. I now recommend that you refrain from ever purchasing a pair of Maui Jim Sunglasses.

As always, the glass is great. Great clarity and contrast.I ordered the reader version as I was tired of taking off my sunglasses and putting on readers to see my cellphone and operate a DSLR. It is much more convenient in that regard. However, they were a bit different than expected. From the description, I expected progressive lenses. It didn't say progressive, but when it said the bifocal lines were practically undetectable, it left the impression - and for the price, they should be. I would also prefer that the bifocal element run across the entire width and go higher on the lens. The glasses either need to be lifted slightly or firmly pressed against my nose bridge to prevent strain.

I have worn Maui's since 1996 encompassing about 10 different styles. These Southern Crosses are not great. They were awesome at first but not after 3 months. As a boater you're constantly cleaning your glasses and the coating/glass on these scratch real easy unlike all my previous pairs of Maui's. I believe the overall quality of the glass is not as sharp or crisp as older styles either. Also the arms/temples have gotten real "sloppy" in a very short period of time. I have a 3 year old pair of Surf Riders that has held up way better than these. Just not satisfied with these glasses at all.

I’ve been wearing Maui Jim sunglasses for many years. They are expensive, but I didn’t mind paying the price because the quality was always so good. Though I like my new pair, I don’t love them, and it’s clear the quality has dropped since I purchased my last pair. Not only has the quality gone down, but the price has practically doubled. Not sure what’s happened-did the company get sold? I will definitely consider other brands for my next purchase.
Just put on my new Southern Cross Polarized sunglasses on this bright beautiful Central Oregon coast afternoon. The surf actually looks better when I am wearing these beauties. The quality/function and fit of these new sunglasses is crazy! Thank you for the ongoing customer service/support and Providing the best eye protection on the planet. Don’t settle for anything less.
I recently bought 2 pair of Southern Cross glasses with reading bifocals in them. One pair with Neutral Grey with a +2.0 reading bifocal. One eye has a +2.0 reading requirement. I then bought another pair with the HCL Bronze lenses with a +1.5 reading bifocal. My intent was to see which worked better for me. At 74 I have had both my eye lenses replaced, due to cataracts, with lenses that were for precise distance only. So I still need readers. Since the lens height is 44, the bifocal portion is down low out of your field of view unless you want to look down there. PERFECT! I found that the neutral grey really did cut the light on sunny days but were a bit dark for overcast days. Having used Maui Jim glasses for the past 10 years, I thought it was time for a fresh pair for this year. Doing a little research I stumbled upon the Southern Cross with the MAUIGreen lens, these glasses are predominately for fishing, I have only used the HCL Bronze for fishing in the past and sometimes on low and broken light they can be a little dark. The Green lens is a game changer, already I think it will be my go to, the light transmission is exceptional in lower and broken light and will be enough for those really bright mornings during the summer. The Matt Olive frames are also really clean and have a great finish. All in all these glasses are 10/10 for me, also if you have a big head they fit really well with great coverage.
Jumped on a pair of prescription Southern Cross sunglasses with Maui Green lenses - which just recently became available with an Rx. In a word - thrilled. Such impressive quality, and the Maui Brilliant lenses are crystal clear - can’t distinguish from glass. Love the slight rose tint that the green mirrors add to the gray lenses as well. Just perfect. Highly recommend!
1) Support your local boutique eyewear shop! They can order Maui Jim's for you, for basically the same price you can get them online. It helps your local economy, along w/ getting you some professional assistance!2) For me, it came down to the Southern Cross vs. the Kanaio Coast (KC). I actually ordered a pair of each and then decided from there. My concern was that the Southern Cross initially seemed too big for my face and that the KC was a smaller version of the Southern Cross - thus better. And, indeed, the KC is very much like a mini-Southern Cross.3) But I found the Southern Cross an absolute upgrade over the KC. They are more substantial - the Southern Cross very much feels like an expensive, significant pair of sunglasses in your hand, what you'd want ... More1) Support your local boutique eyewear shop! They are more substantial - the Southern Cross very much feels like an expensive, significant pair of sunglasses in your hand, what you'd want for the high cost.... The KC does not give off this feeling - they seem much less quality in your hand, more like a department store brand sunglass. Don't get me wrong, the KC are nice glasses - I almost bought them. But the Southern Cross pair is simply a superior build.4) I needed a reader put into my lenses and because the KC is smaller, the reader sat too far up the lens - it was distracting. The larger Southern Cross seems custom made for the reader - the lens having plenty of room to allow the reader to sit low and unobtrusive.5) The smaller KC also sat too close to my eyelashes - I had to adjust them to not hit my eyelashes. The Southern Cross, no issues.6) If you are looking for a pair of high end Maui Jim wraps, the Southern Cross is a fantastic choice. And if you think they look too big on your face, don't immediately put them aside. They very well aren't too big. What I mean by this - a month out from your purchase, you'll probably appreciate the bigger lens regarding sun coverage and the lower-placed reader (if you use one), along w/ the increased heft of the slightly-larger pair. When considering the size of the Southern Cross, think beyond the retail store's mirrors! They very well are just about perfect. Going with the Kanaio Coast because they are little smaller and maybe look a bit cooler in the store's mirrors is a downgrade in every way, and sacrifices too much - at least in my opinion.7) Consider your lens choices - Maui Jim will put gray lenses (their darkest option) in a tortoise frame (which normally comes w/ brown lenses) at no additional cost. You can customize your lenses more than you think. I went with a tortoise frame w/ gray lenses.8) I love my new Southern Cross sunglasses!
I am a big man and finding sunglasses to fit my big face is very difficult the big wave sunglasses fit me perfectly i feel as if they were custom made for me. I recommend these glasses for anyone who is of large stature. They are light weight and sturdy. Very nice glasses. I think they will last me for a long time to come. Mahalo
