This is an item that actually does what it says well. 10/10. Dead simple to use: shove it in a thick part of meat, put your phone next to the oven and set up your cook. The YouTube videos are a bit distracting at this stage but one can avoid them. We are a "saignant" family which is more rare thatn Rare so I have taken to shortening the cooking time by 5-8% and checking it the old fashioned way (sticking a small knife in to check for red-tinged juices). However the Meater has shrotened cooking times overall giving very succulent food. This particulalrly advantageous if one slow cooks. If you read this review and you like meat perfectly cooked, then save up to buy one. You won't regret it.

Absolute game changer for my cooks. Takes all the assumption and guess work out of slow cooking and hot smoking. My favourite part of owning a Meater+ is the guided cook that the app provides -just select the type of meat to be cooked, insert the probe and follow the in app instructions.I only have one teeny tiny minuscule piece of criticism: I think the connectivity from the charging block to the app device (phone tablet etc) could be by way of Wi-Fi rather than Bluetooth which has a relatively short and sometimes unstable range. When I set up cook over night in the garden and take my phone upstairs the connectivity drops out every time and it’s not even that far! I have found a work around but I would have preferred a longer range connection as standard.I am a ... MoreAbsolute game changer for my cooks. Very upset about the amount of money that was put out for this unit. The extended wifi is bologne. It was extra money and the wifi connection right next to the unit a lot of the times cannot even maintain a solid connection.I've tried this meter on a lot of different proteins and steak is the only one that works most consistently. If this worked the way it was intended it would be revolutionary to the industry in temp guages. However so far in my experiences it has failed miserably. Not sure if I have a faulty unit but it was advertised to be safe for ovens, cast iron and bbqs and so far has not met the bill. Inconsistent cooks with the meter not registering an internal and external temp or even a estimated cooking time withing a reasonable period. I hope this ... MoreVery upset about the amount of money that was put out for this unit. The extended wifi is bologne. It's a slick little thermometer. Initially, I was impressed. Lately not so much. Its sucks battery - seems that a constant charging of the probe in the Meater+ base never leaves the overall unit with enough battery for a cook.No visible way of checking battery life...so I got in the habit of changing the battery before every use.The distance between the base and probe and phone is very very limited and seems that I must have the lemon. I have had the phone, probe AND base all within 2 feet of each other and the connection drops, reconnects, drops...Using the base and probe to boost single is confusing. The last use, the appt spent the 2 hour cook estimating the time remaining. It was done and resting and it never figured it out.I know of other people with no ... MoreIt's a slick little thermometer. Initially, I was impressed. I had high hopes for this, it looks well designed, feels solid and well made, seemed like a good idea and was heavily upsold to me by my enthusiastic butcher, so I thought it would be worth the price, but over all I've been very disappointed and If I could send it back and get a refund I would. I've had very mixed results with this, and it tends to over state the temperature. The joints offered are simplistic and limited as is the interface, which seems to be based on American cuts and temperatures. It's hard to calibrate for alternative modes of cooking such as reverse sear, or factor in weight. The calculated cooking time takes too long to arrive at a time, and even then is not as accurate as I'd like. It's hard to calibrate for alternative modes of cooking such as reverse sear, or factor in weight. The calculated cooking time takes too long to arrive at a time, and even then is not as accurate as I'd like. The attempt to use it for a turkey crown on Christmas day was so erratic I resorted to my back up of my electronic probe thermometer which saved me. When I cross referenced the Meater was giving readings of 5-10*c under which is not acceptable. The bluetooth range is much shorter than advertised in practice too, and once inside the oven is ridiculously short and impracticable, I pretty much have to rest on the hob to get a reading. Because the calculations don't seem to take into consideration size, cooking style and heat differential he resting time calculator isn't really accurate either. Overall I would say avoid, as a simplistic gadget for beginners its an expensive folly, if you're a serious cook its not only a waste of time and money but likely to give you erroneous readings that will mess up your meal plan. Sorry to say my advice is to just buy a good electronic probe and learn to do your own calculations, it will save you a lot of time, money and stress and give you greater control.
When it works it's amazing. Unfortunately EVERY time I use it I have to fiddle around with it 4-6 times throughout the cook to get it connected. It will regularly tell me it's lost connection despite everything being right next to each other and the only solution is seemingly to turn bluetooth on and off until it figures itself out, which can take multiple attempts. As well, I've updated it twice. The first time it failed half way through with no explanation and nearly bricked the device. I spent hours getting it working again... you can guess how that cook went.Neat idea and when it works its 5 stars, but until the reliability is addressed it's just not there.
Great gadget. I never thought I could get such a kick out of using a meat thermometer.I am 76 years young and not very tec savvy so figured this would be just another shelf living gift from my son and family.Well this has proved to be so wrong. In the month I have had this tool have had repeated success with perfectly cooked pork tenderloin, prime rib roast , simple 1/4 lb burgers and three different types casseroleEverything cooked to right finish and I don’t have to do any think after cooking starts. . Just remove from heat when chime goes off and enjoyCan’t speak as to last-ability it am hoping for long trouble free partnershipJodi’s to the Meater people for designing a niffy modern cooking aid
It's pretty bloody good. The only gripes I have with the unit are that the Estimation of time remaining takes so long that by the time it is available, the cook is almost done and I have connection issues regularly. My phone will be next to the block and it says it can't connect. There doesn't appear to be any logic behind when it does and doesn't connect. Often, simply closing the app and opening it again can change the state of connection.I really like the product however. Once connected it doesn't disconnect. I like the graphs of the temps over time and I really like that it's not only internal, but it also has an the ambient temperature sensor.
I am not convinced it’s measuring the ambient temperatures correctly. The first time I BBQed a rib steak it came out exactly how I wanted it and set it…medium rare. The device ambient temperature was indicated as well below what the Weber BBQ indicated. I am sure the Meater was more accurate but not sure how much more accurate because the steak to a very long time to cook once finished on indirect heat…like an additional 17 minutes. So the next time I BBQed a different much thicker cut I increased the ambient heat as indicated on the BBQ which was still below what the Meater showed and the whole thing came out medium-well done. So I’m not sure what’s going on.
I really like the concept, and generally trust the readings I get from this device. The App provides very useful information about target temperatures etc., and I love the trend graph. I can not only monitor the meat, but I have a better idea how well my smoker is doing at keeping the temperature right. As long as I check it often enough, I can get readings, and the meat has always turned out right, maybe a bit rare.Service from Meater is really good; I had an issue with my probe, and it was resolved quickly. Remember to push your probe in before pulling it out.I have a Meater Plus. The charger has to be within 6 feet of my smoker, otherwise the bluetooth signal just doesn't make it out of the steel box. Fortunately, the devices are smart enough to retain history while temporarily disconnected. I find that the Android app tends to drop the connection every time my phone or tablet goes to sleep, so when I check on my cook, it has to reconnect. The concept of keeping a phone close to the charger and getting readings from the web would be better if the connection didn't drop. I would consider the wifi version for next time. Maybe the app will be updated to maintain and reconnect while cooking.
