The intellectual Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius composed his now famous Meditations as a personal diary while he struggled to understand himself and the world. It is one of the greatest works of philosophy, being uniquely accessible and wide ranging because he wrote not as emperor, but as a man among other men. The reflections cover most human concerns including the spectre of death, one's role in society, emotions, human rationality, virtue, and the gods. This edition is complete and unabridged and contains Introduction, Notes, Glossary and an Appendix containing correspondence with this tutor Fronto. A must read for anyone interested in stoic philosophy.

One of the best books I have ever read. In my mind, it is the foundational work for anyone looking to get into stoic philosophy. The beauty of this book is that it was never meant to be publicized. We get access to the personal thoughts and musings of an incredibly wise and powerful man during the daunting times in his life.

2000 years ago, the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius kept a personal and private journal where he kept his thoughts, favourite quotes, expressed gratitudes, and worked through his problems. He never wrote it for anyone else to see and definitely not for publication. But somehow his journal survived and has been mass-produced for centuries! It is full of wisdom from the Stoic philosophy and shows why Marcus was such a rare person- courageous, kind, wise, fair. Virtues we can alll aspire to!

Meditations provides useful insights into the philosophy of Stoicism as practised by this outstanding leader, Marcus Aurelius. The book is a journal of thinking not action so it is handy to know what Aurelius got up to during his period of leadership.

Its a compendium of a leading Stoics daily study of his philosophy. Its meaningful and useful, and personally, attempting to live a good life, I do my daily study, practice and training. Its heartening to know that over his 40-odd years Marcus Aurelius (Golden Mark) struggled in the same way as I do when each days new knowledge put into practice reveals yet another previously unknown unknown and how much further there is to go...

Stoic Handbook
24 May 2019

A fairly small book with a great introduction to Marcus Aurelius. An ancient Roman philosophical emperor, whose ideas helped foster Stoic ideas. Keep in mind, that this book, while short, may take proportionally longer time to 'complete' than others, as it is a some-what difficult read, as these were scribblings and personal writings (akin to a journal or diary) of Marcus, and was not meant for other eyes. As well as it being philosophical, which explores the reader to truly take their time and take in the varying perspectives and ideas seriously and not just skim-read past it all.Physical quality and time of the package and book were mint. No bends, scratches etc and with a quick arrival.

Stoicism at its core

It is great to read the diary of one of the most poweful men and influencers in Stoicism.Practical philosophical wisdom that can be applied to any life situation, it changed my life forever. This is a modern translation which help to understand it easily without the old english grammar. Definitely a must read book at least once in your life.

Stoicism at the height of reign.

A journal on the merits of humility chronicled by one of the most historical leaders of the greatest dominion in the ancient world, the Roman Empire. We all have seen dramatic portrayals of Marcus Aurelius on television and in the movies, usually encamped around Germania directing and strategizing the next battle plan. What we don't see is the Stoic philosopher writing works such as this, that have survived through the ages. The book itself is fairly easy to navigate even for those unfamiliar with Greco-Roman history or philosophy. This particular version was the basic translation from the British author George Long, in 1862. It has an Old English style, but that doesn't detract from the essays' meanings. The only reason I rated this at 4 stars was due to this printing having just a few typos, but nothing I couldn't mentally fill in as I read along. Plus it was a very budgeted paperback copy so I didn't expect anything fancy. There are other versions and translations of this book, complete with annotations, explanations, and footnotes by an array of scholars and writers. But for the price this was just fine for me. My copy was $5 dollars. Anything more than that, look for one of those nicer versions.

Timeless wisdom for a weary world, and great value for money.

The style is direct and unpretentious. The message is simple but extraordinarily powerful: life is short, the past and the future are inaccessible, pain and pleasure have no meaning, but inside each one of us there is a ruling faculty that is touched only by itself. Only that which makes us better capable of confronting our condition with resolution and courage can be said to be good, and only that which makes us worse and more unsatisfied can be said to be bad. The only thing that is of any importance is our own private quest for perfection, which no external power can ever destroy. Marcus Aurelius delivers many insightful and inspirational observations about human nature and the human condition, and he makes an excellent rational argument for seeking the good and for acting modestly and continently. I cannot think or a more satifying and moving work, and it is all the more poignant because it was written by a man who wielded almost absolute power and lived surrounded by the luxury, yet managed to keep things in perspective and to occupy himself only with what truly matters. One sentence captures perfectly the spirit of his writings: "Where a man can live, there he can also live well." An extraordinary testimony of wisdom and fortitude.
