If these hikers could tell a story of where they’ve been, it would be quite the story. I’ve had these hikers in 4 different countries, rain mud and snow. This is the second pair of Moab 3’s I own; I also have a GORE-TEX pair for winter and wet seasonal use.I swear by my Moab 3s daily. As someone who suffers from shin splint pain, bad knees, bad lower back pain, Achilles Tendonitis and flat feet, any other shoe eventually hurts me and I find fatigue even walking a mile or so.Not my Moab 3s. In fact, I GAIN energy when I wear these shoes! The soles offer heel platform support that allow me to stand as if buttressed on all sides of my foot and the arch support cradles my flat feet.Keep these coming, Merrell. Don’t change a thing, except maybe make a slip-on Moab 3 as well as other models in other colors.

This is my second pair of Moab hiking shoes. The first pair performed flawlessly for 7 years until the treads wore down. Absolutely no failed stitching or delamination - which is rare these days. I've been exploring New Zealand and the South Pacific full time with them and couldn't be happier.I have a difficult time finding shoes that fit my size 15 narrow feet. Thank goodness for Merrill! Great sole (VIbram) and tread gave good grip on everything from slickrock to sand. Solid upper design. But fit was not right for my feet -- on downhills, my feet slid forward causing my toes to rub against the nose of the shoes, no matter how I laced them or which socks I wore. After a week of hiking in Utah, my feet were in pain. The fit of these shoes (wider heel) is in contrast to the Merrell Gloves 5 and 6 I've been wearing for years, which fit like ... gloves (with wide toe box and narrow heels) and are great even on steep declines. (Note: The Glove 7 seems to have been redesigned, with a narrower toe box and wider heel. I fear I may not be able to wear those.)
I'm switching gradually from hiking boots to lighter, lower-cut shoes, so the Moab 3 was my choice. I really like the aggressive tread pattern and the overall feel of the shoe. I was concerned they would feel squirrelly in the loose rock that prevails out in the mountain west, but that was not the case at all. I feel like I have more energy and agility because of the lighter weight of these shoes, and I find them very comfortable overall. I haven't gone backpacking with these yet, so I'm still hanging on to my boots for now. But I have a feeling they'll be getting sold or donated soon...
You asked where I went with my Moab 3 shoes. I live in a forest along the Pacific coast and wear them outside every day. With all this rain lately maybe should have gotten the water proof style, but it will stop raining shortly, so.... One thing that I should have asked for was an extra pair of shoe strings, seems they always wear out before the shoes. Local strings never seem to be up to the same standards. This happens to be my second pair and I love them. Good grip whether I am going uphill or down. Ankle support along with great arch support for going over rocky terrain, could not ask for better.
I bought 2 pair size 13. One was made in Bangladesh the other was made in Vietnam. The shoes are very different. The one from Bangladesh has very little padding and the one from Vietnam seemed to have almost way too much padding. The odd thing is the one with little padding from Bangladesh weighs in at 549 grams, while the one with a ton of padding from Vietnam weighs in at 518 grams. The one from Vietnam with all the padding seemsto push the foot way forward. However the stitching and leather quality on the Bangladesh seemed higher. Comparing the pairs side by side its like 2 completely different shoes on top with the other thing looking consistent being the soles. I have pictures but it doesn't look like it will et me add.
I bought this shoe as a replacement for MQM Flex2 -- looking for a light weight, all around shoe, good on the trail, but comfortable for every day wear. The Moab 3 is advertised on the website as 11.7 oz per shoe. The overall fit was good, but the shoe felt heavy for everyday wear -- definitely heavier than what I was looking for. I put them on the scales and they weighed about 17 oz for a size 10.5 mens (and my scales are accurate). I contacted Merrell customer service and ordered Moab Speed which did weigh right at 12 oz on my scales -- a much lighter fit. I returned the Moab 3. I reported the weight discrepancy to customer service. The web-site needs to be updated.
This is my third pair of MOABs. The last two were my favorite shoes Ive ever worn due to their out-of-the box comfort and long lasting construction. I wore both pairs nearly every day and each one lasted me about 3-4 years. And they were as comfy as slippers from day one. I got my third pair, same shoe, same size, and the shape of the footbed has changed to the point where I cant wear them. I have worn them for about a month hoping that they just needed to break in or mold to my feet but the arches are way higher and contoured differently causing severe pain in my arches. I've worn them so I cant return them but I am back to wearing my worn out 4 year old pair and the new ones are going in the trash.
