Causing extreme foot pain!

I have always loved Merrells. I bought these with a Dick’s gift card. But these shoes bend extremely in the toe area, across the top of the foot. My feet hurt every time I wore them on a four mile walk through town with my dog, especially when the pavement is wet, because the soles are great.I sent Merrell a picture of the shoe and how much it bent back with very little pressure from one finger. They are not at all interested! I now have tendonitis on the top of my foot from my FINAL attempt to wear these. What a waste of money. Since Merrell was so uninterested, I will be choosing other brands in the future. I’m sorry that I didn’t wear them as soon as I got them, as I’m sure Dick’s would have worked with me.

I needed a good trail shoe and decided on these Merrills after looking at different brands. I've had merrills in the past and really liked them. I've worn them twice on uneven, rocky trails and love the soles and foot support!I dont feel the rocks through the soles and the shoes are sturdy keeping my feet in place. Great traction for up and down trails. My feet can breathe and didn't feel too hot. I wear a 7-1/2 and could possibly have gone with an 8, but didn't want to have a sloppy fit. I think the 7-1/2 was the right decision for me, but you may size up if you are between sizes and wear thicker socks. Overall great trail shoe and I look forward to breaking them in on our weekly hikes this summer!

Great for high volume feet!!
4 May 2019

I just bought a new pair of Oboz, and I don’t know what I was thinking. They’re great shoes but I have a set of high volume feet with some old tendon damage that makes finding a good pair of shoes very difficult. I don’t know what made me think I could stray from my trusted Merrell’s.The Moab Vent in wide is the only shoe that has fit my wacky feet well right off the shelf. I don’t need to add a pair of high-end insoles or orthotics to make them work for me. The ball of my foot has plenty of room to spread out while I’m hiking and my toes have a lot of wiggle room. I’ve been using a lacing technique that gives my forefoot lots of room while securing the heel of my foot in the shoe so I don’t slide forward when going downhill. I can go a long way without the pain ... MoreI just bought a new pair of Oboz, and I don’t know what I was thinking. These have great arch support and the hard insoles provide far more support than the soft squishy ones you find in some shoes. These are wonderful for folks who need lots of room and good support. I won’t make the mistake of going with another brand in the future.

Moab 2....the ONLY shoes I buy. Why? Read...:
19 September 2020

I have bad knees and very flat feet. I have tried mini shoes and mini sneakers with the same results...... after walking or hiking my hips knees and feet hurt badly until I found Moab 2. My first pair were the waterproof ones. Initially I took the foot bed out because of the arch which I thought would hurt my flat feet. I wore them for about a month and they were fabulous. I decided to put the foot bed back in to see how it would feel. It was perfectly fine. I wore these shoes for months before getting the ventilators. For the first time in many many years I can walk for miles without any hip, knee, or foot discomfort either during or after the walk/hike. I know this sounds corny, but I never thought I would find a shoe that works this well for me. If you have a ... MoreI have bad knees and very flat feet. I know this sounds corny, but I never thought I would find a shoe that works this well for me. If you have a foot knee or hip issues these are definitely the shoes for you! Even if you don’t have those issues, I very highly recommend these shoes. The waterproof ones are absolutely waterproof. When deciding on a size keep in mind that the waterproof ones or a little more snug than the vent to later’s. I am Magine that is by design so that no water seeps in under the tongue or around the top of the shoe. The tongue of the waterproof shoes is thicker and more cushiony than the ventilators. The same is true around the heel. Needless to say, the waterproof ones are warmer than the ventilators. When I purchased my first pair I was looking for sneakers that I could walk miles with and that did not cause discomfort. My son recommended hiking shoes. Now, as I said previously, these are the only shoes I buy! I wear them with everything including shorts, even capris & dresspants. I finally have a shoe that I can wear all day without pain in the evening. The weather they looked I see you’re not… Who cares?!? They work for me and that’s what matters!! I hope you find this helpful and I hope the shoes work for you!

Not as good as before - fewer lacing holes now
29 January 2019

These have been my go-to shoes for several years. Wear them almost daily for walking the dog, doing stuff around the house, light hiking. I pretty much live in these, my Dansko clogs and Birkenstocks. I was disappointed to discover that in latest pair I bought (January 2019) there's one less lacing hole at the top of the shoe. Probably Merrell wanted to shave a few cents off production costs. As a result these don't fit my feet as well as before. I have a wide forefoot and narrow heel, and the extra hole really helped the shoe fit snug around my heel. Now it feels sloppy and I'm having to continually retighten. I know there are ways to relace the shoe to sort of replicate having that extra hole, and I'll try that and hope it helps. But it ticks me off that I have to ... MoreThese have been my go-to shoes for several years. Wear them almost daily for walking the dog, doing stuff around the house, light hiking. Other than that it's still a good shoe, but when it comes time to replace I'll now look at other options.

Not for my skinny feet
28 October 2022

I so wanted to like these nic neutral colored hikers but returned due to fit issues. On the upside they are quality construction and materials for a reasonable price. Not for my foot however. I have a narrow heel and high arch with slight bunions. While this shoe did fit length wise it felt sloppy like maybe too wide in the wrong places? Oh well the search continues

One of the best women's hiking shoes on the market
27 December 2018

So this is my favorite hiking shoe. It might be one of my one of my favorite shoes ever, and I'm very picky with my gear. It's not the most durable, nor the fastest and lightest, nor the grippiest, but it's such an excellent all-rounder that it has become my go-to for anything that doesn't require specialized footwear.Just FYI, I also reviewed the Goretex Midboot version of these (I own both), so some parts of these two reviews will be the same. No, I'm not a shill. I just didn't want to rewrite the whole thing. XDFit: This is one of the strongest features of Merrell's shoes. They tend to make roomy but well-fitted shoes that don't skimp on toe box room. Moreover, the MOAB's come in women's wide sizes, a relative rarity which means these shoes are on a very short list of good options for women with wider feet.Comfort: Again, this is another strong point of Merrel's shoes. Their shoes have a very high degree of out of the box comfort, and this shoe is no exception. I'm personally a big fan of the hiking shoe form factor. If you have well-conditioned feet and ankle muscles, and you don't need the added stability of a boot because of injury or joint wear, these are much more comfortable than equivalent midboots, granting you greater breathability, ankle comfort, and an increased range of motion. However, this comes with caveats. While the relatively soft shank makes for a design that's very comfortable when walking over top soil, mud, forest litter, or other terrain with give, and which transitions very well to street use, this shoe shows its weaknesses in other terrain. I do nearly all of my hiking on rocky, sandy terrain in the Southwest. And in this environment, a lack of a stiff shank means you have a much higher degree of ground feel, often to the point of discomfort. If you step softly and carefully to maximize traction on tricky terrain, you may prefer this because of the increased tactile feedback. But depending on your pace and walking style, it can be uncomfortable or even painful. Don't get me wrong: it's a very comfortable shoe in general. Just be aware that it isn't a perfect substitute for a thicker, stiffer hiking boot in situations that demand it.Warmth: These shoes live up to their Ventilator name and breathe very well, but as such, they're not going to do a lot to add insulation. This can be a boon in the summer, as your feet won't cook in these like they would in a waterproof shoe or thicker hiking boot. On the flipside, in the winter, the cold can and will get through. However, I find this to be manageable with good socks and the right base layer bottoms. I've never really had a problem with my feet or ankles feeling cold in these, and I'm generally very cold sensitive.Waterproofing: These shoes aren't meaningfully waterproof, so the bigger question becomes: do they dry quickly if you get them soaking wet on the move? I would say they're in the middle of the road here. I've never had a problem with them staying wet, but I live in a dry climate, meaning clothes get wet less often and dry far faster when they do. YMMV.Grip: All MOAB models use a Vibram TC5+ with 5mm lug depth. In my experience dealing with loose terrain on mountain hikes where a slip means bad things, the tread pattern is excellent, and the rubber offers far superior grip compared to non-outdoor shoes. Rubber compound design is all about trade-offs, though, and this boot really tries to strike a middle ground between being hard-wearing, which it mostly succeeds at, and grippy, which it again mostly succeeds at. You won't get the superb traction of a super specialized technical shoe from these, as TC5+ soles don't have that kind of soft and sticky rubber, but the sole of this shoe will last far, far longer in its intended role as a hard-wearing hiking shoe.Durability: These shoes last. They'll definitely last many more miles, especially with periodical insole replacement, than a cheaper hiking shoe or a fast and light shoe like a trail runner.Versatility: These shoes shine as a hard-wearing three-season hiking shoe, and in that niche, they can do a lot. They're more durable than trail runners, while still being reasonably light and very capable, but they're much lighter and more comfortable than boots. That said, as with everything, you'll run into limits with these shoes. I think they're fine in the cold with good socks, but I think that's specific to relatively dry cold conditions. I personally wouldn't be using these in snowy or extremely wet conditions. Also, they don't flex as much as trail runners, but they're still soft enough that you'll probably want to pick your traction devices carefully if you do try to pinch hit with these in the ice. Conclusion: This is one of the best options for women with wide feet, but even if you buy regular width, you'll get a roomier fit that you might appreciate. You won't go wrong with this for three-season use, and it will handle high heat well, though extremes of cold or wet may leave you wanting something more purpose-built. It's not super duper grippy like a climbing or approach shoe, but the soles are competent and reliable, and they're hard-wearing. Between the quality, casual usability, and expected lifespan of these shoes, they're an excellent value.

Perfect shoes!
29 January 2023

I have bunions on both feet but when I order "wide" shoes, they are often too wide. I ordered my usual size 11 in normal width after reading these shoes have generous toe box and the shoes did not disappoint! I love them. They were comfortable right out of the box, they don't hurt my bunions and they are very grippy which I appreciate for hiking. Got these shoes on sale at half the price - it was a steal and I am very pleased with my purchase!

These Boots are Made for the Outdoors
27 March 2022

I bought these boots in anticipation of my trip to Sedona. I had previously bought a pair of high top Merrell boots 2 years ago and got a lot of use out of them, but I wanted a pair of lighter-weight, low top boots since I was only hiking and not rock climbing. Both pairs of boots ran a bit small. I wear a size 10 to 10.5 or so and the size 11 gave sufficient room in the toe box without being too large for my smaller foot. My feet are narrow, but I just laced them up a little tighter than how I bought them. The brown Moab 2 Vent hiking boots are so attractive. They hid the red dirt/dust well. We averaged between 4 to 10 miles each day. These boots hiked the Hiline Trail in Sedona and even walked around the south rim of the Grand Canyon. Since I returned, I have been walking in them with the dog at a local cemetery and an 18-hole golf course. They keep my feet dry and comfortable.
