This is an excellent Thunderbolt 4 product. Really slick minimalist design, incredible performance, and frankly easy to use. This is ideal to have for your laptop or desktop even. It expands your ports and really makes working much easier. I've used several on the market and this is by far the best one I've tested. In terms of Price: yes it is expensive but it is a quality product and all Thunderbolt 4 (real ones) are. Buying just a Thunderbolt 4 cable normally is around $200, so getting this hub seems like a fantastic deal.

The surface dock has a known problem that it is very difficult to keep the connection to 2 monitors going. Basically any time you have your surface go into sleep mode or a screen saver it disconnects one or both screens and you have to pull everything out, turn it all on and off again to make work. Basically a faulty product that Microsoft knows about but cannot fix. Read the Microsoft forums to understand that this is a known problem with no fix. Any good review on here is either due to only one screen being used or they got very lucky with their monitor combination.

Having purchased a refurbished Surface Book 2 about a year ago, I soon realised that it was short of ports, indeed with just the one USB-C port. The USB-A ports that it does have, do not supply much in the way of power, so devices take an age to charge. What it does have is a Surface Connect port, which I could only use to connect the power supply unit that came with it. I decided a while back that I could connect a Microsoft Surface Dock to Surface Connect port, to give me a usable number of extra ports, but unfortunately, no USB-C ports, which are essential these days. The even later Surface Thunderbolt 4 Dock wasn't really an option, since it would require the Surface Book 2's only USB-C port, making the Surface Connect port, redundant! The list price of the Surface Dock 2 was a concern, but the one that I purchased, new, boxed but reported unused, seemed to fit the bill being, well discounted on the new price. It also had nearly a month left of the original guarantee, as I found when I registered the device under my Microsoft account! No real concerns there given the Microsoft build quality, since this is a pretty solid piece of kit! The best part is that this was one of very few items that I have purchased which was immediately pressed into service, and so far, it has done everything I expected.

This replaced the previous model which had mini DP ports for the additional screens attached to the dock. These worked fine but you either need an adapter or specific lead for connecting. Additionally everything syncs a little better and faster when you reconnect. As with the previous model its better to restart when you reconnect but it will work when you connect from sleep mode, just occasionally get the odd issue.
If you are looking for the best way to maximize the productivity of your Surface Pro for in your work life then you need to purchase this device.I have a dock at the office and at home both of which are connected to two LG Wide-screen displays. This allows for three fully functioning displays to use when connected to the dock. Especially at the office when so many other devices are draining the wi-fi. It is also very convenient to have my external speakers plugged into the dock. Lastly all the additional USB and USB-C connections are definitely the cherry on top. Allowing for my surface to connect with external hard drives on my desk and every other gadget is great.Being able to instantly do so much from just connecting one cord to my Surface Pro is nothing short of brilliance. The dock is pricey and I highly suggest picking it up when it is on sale. Luckily Best Buy has pretty regular promotions for Surface products.
Bought this primarily for my Surface Pro 9 as I have a lot of peripherils. I installed this with 2 add on ssd drives and 2 external monitors. It does not have a native hdmi input so I had to get a Usb-c to hdmi for one of my monitors. The 1G ethernet works fine, but we have 5G fiber so I use an external 5G adapter on the docking station and get the full speed throughput. I don't know if everything runs at 40G (as advertised) but I have no practical problems with the speed - I do audio and video editing and live updating to the cloud. I give it a solid 5 out of 5.
I really wanted to like this docking solution, especially with it on sale. I would not pay more than $100 for this if I was going to buy it again. I'll give you one small reason it may not be worth and one big reason. A small issue with it is the inconvenience in not having an HDMI port on the dock. You are forced to buy an adapter. Also, you are limited to 4K at 60hz (well 30hz with most of the cables and adapters I already have). If it had HDMI 2.1, it would be well worth it, but it appears the SB3 can't use the GPU to drive the display so it wouldn't work anyway. The bigger issue is that the keyboard and mouse become erratic at times. I recently found an update on Microsoft's site to upgrade the firmware. The bigger issue is that the keyboard and mouse become erratic at times. I recently found an update on Microsoft's site to upgrade the firmware. Unfortunately my SB3 never found the dock on its own through the Surface app to make it easier on me to update it. After updating the firmware, the keyboard still goes nuts on occasion, where you type a letter and it starts repeating itself forever. Or you paste in a password and it repeats it forever with no way to stop your keyboard. I also noticed with this dock, when I open the default Windows Mail App, my Inbox will constantly scroll down forever with no way to stop it. You have to reboot your laptop to make it work again. I have tried multiple keyboards and experience issues time to time, so it's either the dock or the SB3 causing issues between the both. The only reason I'm sticking with this dock is that the OEM figured out a way to ensure that other docks won't pass through power to the device, forcing me to stay with this solution. If you really need it, that's the only reason you should buy it.

The Dock 2 also includes a higher-wattage power brick to supply even the most the power-hungry Surface Book devices. The Dock 2 is a "one cable" solution using the Surface Connector port, allowing you to easily attach or detach your Surface device and leave everything else plugged into the Dock itself. The cable on the Dock 2 is longer than the previous Dock, allowing you more freedom in placement on your desk. The Dock 2 still has the separate power brick and cabling that connects to a power outlet.I encourage you to take stock of the main ports you're looking for from the Dock 2, especially compared to the Dock "1" -- the Dock 2 has 4 USB-C ports and no DisplayPort or HDMI connections. If you're looking to connect a monitor, as I suspect nearly everyone shopping this device will, you'll need a monitor with a USB-C connection or a dongle/cable that converts USB-C to DisplayPort or HDMI (or whatever your monitor uses). While these dongles/cables are readily available and relatively affordable, it's yet another purchase you have to make if your monitor isn't the latest and greatest. Only the Dock 2's rear USB-C ports are display-compatible, but with the right adapter I was able to drive a 4k monitor with no issues. Depending on your Surface model you can drive multiple 4k displays at 60 or 30 hertz refresh rates.Overall, this is a premium device and a true one-cable solution for connecting most modern Surface devices. I hesitated on rating this 4 or 5 stars, but ultimately went with 5 stars because the Dock 2 does what it's supposed to do and does it very well. It's all-in on USB-C and you need to be aware of your exact port needs before purchase, as well as the capabilities of your specific Surface device (only the latest and greatest can power multiple 4k monitors at a full 60hz refresh rate). If your needs are met by what the Dock 2 offers I think you'll be pleased. I've had no major issues with it since purchase and really appreciate how it streamlines my desk area. The Dock 2 commands a premium price and I think it's really best fitted to power users with high-spec Surface devices. Casual users may be much happier with a more affordable USB-C dongle or dock if their Surface device has a USB-C port already; otherwise, users of older and/or less-powerful Surface devices might want to check out the original Surface Dock, especially if they already have a monitor that uses DisplayPort. Folks with HDMI-based monitors will need an adapter regardless of which Surface Dock model they use.
This dock is not good. The port configuration is a very awkward and limiting. You might think all those USB-C ports are helpful, but really think about you from doing anything useful.I had the complexity of getting the video to work surface laptops have a combination of frustration and futility. It’s just not a good dock. When you pay $200 you wanna like this and you want to somehow make it work but you’re gonna be disappointed.I love service computers in fact, I’ll most of them is why I bought the dock. It’s taken the joy of some of my devices, so I just put it the dock in the back of my closet, and pretend like it doesn’t exist.
4 years in it works. but inconsistently. as long as i never touch it, it stays on. but if the power cable shifts at all it slips from the rear port of the dock. Should've had a factory replacement within the first year. the original charger from microsoft for the surface book 3 stopped working within months and this was the solution instead of buying a new charger.the surface book 3 is a great and relevant laptop still but in my experience their charger and the surface dock was poorly designed for the price and expectation from the brand. the product was bulky and cumbersome, and the ports for cable connections weren't strong enough for the weight of the two blocks that it comes with.
