The 256GB SSD is a good size and should be good enough for most people though and you can easily use a usb-c external drive for more if needed. Moving onto the OS, Windows 11 is by far much better than W10 especially for tablet usage and I think at this screen size it's really nailed usability and scale with practicality. I am disappointed with the 8GB RAM a bit. It hasn't impacted my usage yet and likely won't matter if you're not a power user however it can definitely cause some issues if you're a content creator or trying to game with it and in 2022 16GB should be considered the minimum standard to shoot for. Speaking of gaming, the Intel iris xe graphics here simply aren't up to snuff unfortunately. For the vast majority of games you're going to be limited to 1080p low settings for older games at 30fps with newer games requiring 720p to get anywhere near playable framerates. I would've much rather had an amd based APU since they offer much better performance especially for gaming for a miniscule loss in efficiency overall tho I understand why they went with Intel since it has better integration with how Windows 11 works. The Intel xe igpu might be good enough however for emulators if you wanna play older games from the GameCube or even 3ds era. The thunderbolt 4 capability does open the door for possible eGPU usage however I do not have the means at this time to actually test if it would work well. Moving onto the peripherals the optional keyboard attachment is something I would deem essential and Microsoft really should include it with the tablet rather than making you pay extra for it, especially if it's marketed as a 2 in 1 laptop and not as just a tablet. Overall though I think if you're in the market for a new laptop and you're not concerned with gaming performance, this is a top tier buy.

I use it primarily for music reading with Mobile Sheets software and a general computing when traveling. It is lightweight and easy to pack. It works well with my Bluetooth accessories and was easy to set up on the networks I use. The 12.3 inch screen is perfect size for reading music scores, yet it is still compact enough to be easily carried. I haven't done a full test of battery life, but I think it will be short of the 15 hours I have seen advertised, it used less than half of it's capacity during a recent 5 hour session. There is some bezeling along the edges as well as the top to compensate for the webcam on top and just enough space on the side so that your thumbs or fingers do not accidentally press on the screen clicking on things by accident. All in all, Microsoft has done a great job at adding to the features for this new model. I like that the storage is upgradable in the back with just a flick of a compartment. You can easily change out and upgrade your storage and some models even come with the ability to add it to your mobile broadband account. Build quality is excellent, of course and you're able to run full windows applications without any limitations, which is probably one of the biggest things about this device. I would say if you bought last year's model, there's no need to upgrade to the surface pro 9. But if you're a few years back I would say that this is a worthy upgrade.

Before I purchased this I was using a Surface Pro 7 which I still have that I've passed down to my son. I was skeptical if I should spring for the Surface Pro 9 but I'm so glad I did it. I had issues with my financial spreadsheets and paying bills as I manage bills through my email. With two spreadsheets and my email open it could barely keep up and then opening a new tab for the bill I needed to pay was so slow. Now I can open all the tabs for each bill I need to pay with my spreadsheets and email open. Windows 11 is also great and I have all my tech connected and it's seamless. I'm really impressed and Windows is my preferred OS. Now I can open all the tabs for each bill I need to pay with my spreadsheets and email open. Windows 11 is also great and I have all my tech connected and it's seamless. I'm really impressed and Windows is my preferred OS. The tablet function is great, if I want to show someone something I'm looking at I can disconnect the keyboard or fold it behind and manage controls through the touchscreen. I know people can argue apple does that too. I don't like the box you are stuck with and have to use apple products to play nice. I have a google phone that connects to the Pro 9 so easily. I can answer phone calls and respond to texts when I'm on it. If I'm watching a video I can cast it to any of my TVs in my house or at another home or office. It's light and the same footprint of my Pro 7 but the rounded edges make it so much nicer to handle in tablet mode. It goes everywhere with me and as long as Microsoft keeps up with trends I will continue to upgrade since tech moves so fast. The face recognition to unlock is so much better than the fingerprint as it can be finicky and need to redo the fingerprint occasionally. There is more I'm missing I bet, but if you are considering one get it! I have an overbuilt desktop PC and I haven't turned it on since I've had my Surface Pros.
Coming from a surface Pro 3, the hardware is much improved.Most welcome improvement to me is that this has two USB4/Thunderbolt4 ports.The magnetic charge plug remains the same across all Surface models. The power brick remains the same, with a 65W model that includes an USB-A port for charging, which I find convenient.Then I noticed there are no other ports. No headphone plug, no MicroSD card reader like in previous releases.My surface Pro 3 became unusable when the internal SSD stopped working reliably and since there is no way to do any repairs on these tablets, could no longer work.This model has a great improvement which is a magnetic latch behind the hinge that exposes the SSD drive, so this is the only upgradeable component here. Nothing new here. The Alcantara surface is my favorite part of the keyboard.If setting the keyboard all the way flat, it feels very wobbly, but folded against the bottom lip as this is the intended use feels very solid.The trackpad is fine, wide enough; not the widest trackpad but it's fine. Clicking requires a bit more force than other tablets but is fine.Typing is fine with island keys with enough travel. They're backlit with three brightness levels.Putting the keyboard flat reveals the thin pen. The cradle for the pen also charges it. This is leaps and bounds improvements over the older pens.The pen's tip is removable, and there are sensors on the tip itself, so getting new tips won't be as simple as in older models. The tip itself feels more solid. The control button is right where one would hold the pen, and the top is an action button that is configurable for one click, two clicks and hold action, with vibration feedback from the pen. As mentioned, to recharge it just simply put it back on the cradle. No more sticking the pen to the top of the tablet.Windows setup is about the same as any other windows laptop. A tad simpler because one is only required to sign to a Microsoft account (and yes it seems to be a requirement). Other than that there is the usual amount of endless advertisements and bundle apps like Spotify, Disney, Instagram, TikTok (really), Amazon apps and so on.Then there is the hours long required upgrades and multiple reboots. Some of the required upgrades appeared to get stuck and duplicate until they eventually went away after having to run a repair right after the initial setup. Typical windows issues.After install, I realized my Surface 'Pro' tablet no longer comes with Windows 'Pro', but Windows Home and the pro version is a $99 upcharge.Using Windows is like any other laptop or 2-in-one which goes into tablet mode when the keyboard is detached.However it feels a bit slow. The Windows Mail app feels very sluggish, Microsoft Edge feels like it takes its sweet time after any action, although other times is snappy.Out home has a gigabit internet provider and Wi-Fi 6 Mesh. Speedtest shows close to 400 Mbps on Wi-Fi which is actually the highest I've seen on WiFi, so it has a solid WiFi.The screen is very nice, I really like the form factor that is taller than the typical 16:9 in other laptops, I can do a lot more here.Screen is HDR but only for movies. HDR is unavailable for any other mode including photos, even when plugged in. It's not something I need but I find it odd.Overall it's an excellent convertible tablet / laptop. The screen format is excellent with the longer format a pleasure to use. It's not possible to service except for the SSD. That the SSD can be swapped is a major improvement.Because the only ports are two USB4/TB4 ports means one would be wise to carry some adapters like a portable USB-C hub. Being a Microsoft product I'd expect it will have better support over time, although the initial setup did not feel any less convoluted than any other laptop.

Now I know that some people have their reservations about windows 11 but it really isn’t as bad as it is made out to be but we will leave that alone as this review isn’t about the operating system. That being said though I will touch on the features that make this device great.:::Specs:::I want to note that there are a few configurations available for the surface pro 9 but I have the Intel core i5 1235U (10 core & 12 threads) paired with 8 GB DDR5 memory and Intel IRIS XE graphics. There is a user replaceable 256GB SSD M.2 2230 which resembles a CF flash card. I have to admit that the 12th gen i5 is power efficient and doesn’t run hot.:::Battery:::Battery life is amazing and I have never had battery life in a mobile device last more than 6 hours. My Surface Pro 9 last a good 12 hours without a charge. I use it daily for school and sometimes for game streaming I have used both Game Pass and Remote Play with my PS5.:::Other things:::- DisplayThe display on the surface is not OLED quality but I am more than satisfied with it the clarity is great and is plenty bright. The screen is 13 inches and has a resolution of 2880x1920 with a 3:2 display ratio and a smooth 120Hz refresh rate. I also love the fact that the surface has a touch screen and a stylus input as well. I really feel like Windows 11 was made with all of this mind.:::Pros & Cons:::Pros- Many hardware options- Power efficient- Great battery life- Portable- Love the form factor tablet/laptopCons- My only complaint is that the keyboard and stylus are separate accessories:::Closing thoughts:::I know I listed what seems to be a significant con but there is certainly a way around that albeit not as elegant as what is designed to go with the device but you can opt to purchase a wireless keyboard & mouse and use that and the stylus separately of course.Besides that, I really love my surface and would only trade it for another surface I say that having owned Chromebooks, Mac laptops, and various windows-based laptops and Samsung android-based tablets. There really isn’t anything like this on the market others have tried from what I have seen e.g. Samsung tablets and other PC manufacturers.:::TL;DR:::With so many options for school and or work it can be difficult to decide what to get and let’s be real the first thought is Windows or Mac. This is the way to go no Mac laptop can do what this does not even the ipad pro is as good as this. Heck not even a Windows laptop is as good as the Surface. Pick one up you’ll be glad you did.
