Chuck is a deal breaker

Here is my feedback since you asked... Chuck wobble and runout is shameful. Especially since it is the number one complaint about Milwaukee drills from their customers and is SUCH an easy fix. Put a $50 Rohm chuck on from the factory like Hilti does and be done with it! I really wish Milwaukee would offer a no frills basic drill featuring durability. Maybe they could do a "throwback edition" where they build one like they used to. They could charge twice the price and it would sell out fast. My 2604 drill required me to pump the trigger because it kept falsely sensing an overload of sort. I really hope the new one with the "anti kickback" doesn't do the same thing. I wish my drill didn't try to think and prevent me from hurting my delicate wrists.

Extremely disappointed, light duty only!

Milwaukee used to do this but have since gone to this design which is more suitable to a Fisher Price drill than one used for actual materials.Second, the chuck release is unbelievably difficult to do. After hammer drilling 8 holes into concrete, it took the use of a pipe wrench to loosen the chuck! Happened again today drilling ONE 5" hole into concrete. My last Milwaukee could take an absolute beating for hours drilling concrete and getting the chuck to release took one twist. Not so much for this one. This thing is great for light duty drilling, e.g. into wood, MAYBE small concrete holes so the chuck doesn't seize, but thats about it. If you want something for heavier duty use, get a DeWalt maybe. As a huge Milwaukee fan, this pains me to say, but this is not a quality tool.

There seems to be an issue with the trigger. It gets stuck at random as if the plastic was not trimmed correctly. It feels like it jams and could possibly break if you try to force it. I have to let go, and re-pull carefully. That's not the only issue however. The speed controller is very difficult to switch from 1 to 2 and back. This may be due to it being new but does seem very difficult compared to my DeWalt or Makita. The build quality seems to be very good with the exception of the above fit and finish items. I could have gotten a faulty unit but I will continue to break this in to find out.

Great drill
2 March 2024

I’ve had several of these drills over the years. It has an amazing amount of touch. I’m an electrician and prewire a lot of homes with it using various size drill bits. Great drill BUT, the chucks always loosen up which eventually destroys the shaft on the drill bits or lose your bits and occasionally will lock tight to the point you have to hit it with a hammer to loosen it. Another point I’d like to warn people about is the fact that there are many knock off batteries out there cheaper. They are cheaper but you get what you pay for. They don’t have nearly the power and longevity as the Milwaukee brand batteries do.

I am not happy I have a shelf full of red tools
25 February 2024

Owned this for a bout two years, only used at home for basic repairs and in my basement wood shop. I was using a 3.5” hole saw on drill mode when things went bad. The chuck and the gearbox self destructed. Chuck still attached to the bit and odds and ends all over the workbench. I found all the pieces and sent it in to Milwaukee for repair. Repair was denied saying: gears- broken off, chuck-broken off, drill-poor condition. This drill was in mint condition, and no way it should have broke.

I’ve been wasting $$ on Dewalt for 16yrs!!!!
12 September 2020

Ok so, I’ve been in the contracting business for the last 20 years and after about a year in I was sold on Dewalt the guy I worked with swore by it and it never let him down so I followed suit and I purchased my first 18v Dewalt combo. I’ve built a hefty collection of their brand ever since. I’ve also countlessly over the years defended bragged or talked up my brand against others, great tools lots of power ex.... Well I purchased a m12 fuel ratchet and was literally blown away by the power the ratchet had this turned into another collection(it wasn’t cheating because it was a different voltage of tool, right?) Well I purchased a m12 fuel ratchet and was literally blown away by the power the ratchet had this turned into another collection(it wasn’t cheating because it was a different voltage of tool, right?) Well a particular job I had burnt up a dewalt right angle drill, a DW brushed drill and ripped the gears apart in the DW hammer drill, this put me in some kind of fit I was furious, A- just ruined 500+in tools B-still had a hole to drill. So I googled what’s the top drill to my surprise the article I found had Milwaukee fuel 18v rated at the top of the list with plenty facts supporting it. Still I’m just a mad DW Guy, so I googled what was the top DW drill...Turns out it was the one laying on the floor stripped unusable. So at this point I’m like this job can’t be done with a cordless tool but at the same point I had to prove that dewalt was better and if my drill couldn’t get through the material neither will a different brand. I get back from Home Depot place the same bit in the m18 fuel drill chuckle a bit cause I’m like I just bought a 350 combo kit to burn up a drill to prove a point and return it..WOW, Was I ever wrong? To the point where I felt stupid for not at least trying the brand, it took 1/4 of the effort that it took the other drills. It was like my Dewalt tools were nothing more than the food club brand at the gory store. Hands down I will not be adding anymore dewalt tools to my collection unless it cannot be found within Milwaukee 18v brand. I will say dewalt has tools Milwaukee doesn’t and vice versa so having both isn’t that much of an issue, but I will say I have replaced a good bit of my DW tools with Milwaukee 18v brand all because of this purchase I am reviewing right now. Sorry If you were expecting a detailed review of what noise it made how it smelled or how fast it spun, I’m don’t care much about the specs it’s either going to work or not work. With no regrets whatsoever in my eyes the best brand of cordless tool out on the market today is Milwaukee and they may of held that title for the last 15yrs I was just to bull headed. I have a video on face book where I put it and the closest dewalt drill competitor side by side with a 7/8 Milwaukee auger bit, put it through a 1 1/8 thick piece of cherry, I should clarify that only 1 drill made it straight through the other barely sank the starter tip before coming to a direct stop. The winner Milwaukee!!!

Love the drill but….
13 January 2024

The drill has lots of torque and it does stop fast when it gets caught. This has the hammer setting. I had a yellow drill with the hammer setting and didn’t like when not in hammer mode there was play in and out of the chuck. The handle on the Milwaukee has two positions, left and right hand. If those don’t work you have to use it without the handle. It’s also very loud. If you are wearing hearing protection it’s not a problem but I use this in quiet places and if I have it close to my ears it is uncomfortably loud. I drill a lot of stainless steel. It goes faster than I want it to. A bunch of little things that make me grab my 12V drill.

M18Fuel 1/2" hammer drill and why you need one
14 March 2024

Once upon a time I was a devoted customer to another more yellow brand. However, based on personal experience in the work place Milwaukee fuel battery operated power tools have demonstrated the ability to perform on a consistently higher level over a longer period of time that being said I can say that all the power tools that I use on the job and all that I personally own are Milwaukee. My recent purchase of a m18 fuel 1/2"hammer drill was to replace one that I had owned for almost 5 years and had also lost, not because of battery or mechanical failure but because I actually lost it through some embarrassing dumbassory on my part, but I had to have a replacement because I use it frequently and depend on it to drill into concrete, tile and use it to drive fasteners ... MoreOnce upon a time I was a devoted customer to another more yellow brand. The battery charges rapidly and doesn't discharge when not in use. I really like the charge level indicator. The m18 line of power tools are great. I have several and would recommend that you acquire some as well whether for business or home use you will not be disappointed but you will be more productive.

Powerful but Poor in other respects
22 June 2021

I bought this to replace a first generation version (Model 2604-20) that failed (prematurely, I feel, from motor seizure). This updated Generation 3 version (Model 2804-20) has powerful torque but also many of the faults documented by other one and two star reviewers, namely:The chuck has a lot of runout, even normal length bits wobble enough to cause noticable vibration in both drill and workpiece (this is vibration due to runout wobble with a standard bit in wood in drill mode, not hammer mode). I tested with several bits of different diameters, lengths and types (fluted, wood boring, masonry, etc) and tested the same bits in another drill, side by side, and rechucked the bits several times; it's definitively runout in the drill. I tested with several bits of different diameters, lengths and types (fluted, wood boring, masonry, etc) and tested the same bits in another drill, side by side, and rechucked the bits several times; it's definitively runout in the drill. If all you need is to bore holes through wood as fast as possible, probably not an issue, but if you need to start a hole in hard metal it's difficult to control the location accurately, and then while drilling the wobble is hard on bit, workpiece, drill, and hands.I found thee clutch impossible or difficult to set for the correct release torque for some fasteners. Clutch setting 1 will drive up to 2" drywall screws right thru fir or pine (soft wood) lumber without stopping! This new electronic clutch does not break away and click like the Gen 1 mechanical clutches; instead, it stalls the motor, which makes it feel like the motor is bogging or battery is dying, which I found odd and discomforting. Then, if the trigger is released and pulled again, there's a burst of power that will turn the fastener a fair bit more before stalling again. Whether this behavior is good or bad is a matter of personal preference; I find the old mechanical clutch to be more accurate and controllable. The speed / gear switch is hard to shift compared to the Gen 1 tool and compared to drills of another brand that I use. On the plus side, this drill has a lot of power / torque in (high) Speed 2, and Speed 2 RPM has been increased from Gen 1.Unresponsive Customer Service: I have reached out to Milwaukee via their web form, email, and voicemail on the 800 number, no response.Under hard use, the drill does get hot quickly and battery level decreases at a commensurately high rate. The brushless motor makes a lot of torque but also a lot of heat and may not be the most efficient type of motor.I noticed right away a clattering sound and feel when releasing the trigger quickly after full speed (trigger fully depressed) operation, especially in Hi Speed 2 range. The Milwaukee rep at the local hardware store explained this is the automatic electronic brake and is normal; he pulled another drill off the shelf and it did the same. The Gen 1 tool didn't do this and ran and sounded smoother, but was also less powerful and may not have had, or needed, the brake. The factory repair service for these tools, one flat fee regardless of the problem, costs more than the bare tool can be purchased for on line. It's a shame since this effectively makes them disposable.I want to like this tool especially since I have other tools in Milwaukee's M18 lineup and have had good service from those. However, the problems with both the Gen 1 and 3 hammer drills have me contemplating seriously a switch to a different brand.

Warranty won’t cover a trigger malfunction.
29 January 2024

Don’t buy this drill. Milwaukee doesn’t stand behind their warranty for this product. The trigger on my drill was stuck in the on position which caused the drill to keep spinning even when I took my hand off completely off the drill. This made my drill keep spinning, hitting a 2x4 on the side and cracking the housing. Don’t get me wrong the things got a lot of torque, but if releasing the trigger doesn’t stop the drill that’s a huge issue. I sent my drill in for service and they wouldn’t cover it because they don’t cover damage to the housing. I would understand that if I dropped the drill off a ladder or off the back of the truck. But when the trigger malfunction causes the housing to break I think that ought to be covered under the warranty. It’s really too bad ... MoreDon’t buy this drill.
