Bizarre, beautiful, surreal, read it!
I didn't like this book and I don't understand the hype around it. I found it confusing and annoying. It definitely felt like going down the rabbit hole in Alice in Wonderland but on steroids. Waste of my time and money :(
I saw this marketed as Heathers meets The Vegetarian, which seems on the money, but it also strongly reminded me of Kristen Roupenian and some of the sick and twisted stories featured in You Know You Want This. It's dark as hell and demanded my full attention.
Bunny was a thoroughly enjoyable reading experience.I feel like it's one where you can't give much of a review of the actual plot, because uh.... where do you even begin? how do you explain it without spoilers & also sounding like a mad person? I enjoyed Awad's writing style, and found it easy to sink my teeth into, devouring the twists and turns like a heavily frosted mini cupcake.
Bunny is the perfect novel for those who like to read something a little different. It's an incisive satire of social dynamics - in particular those of female friendships - as well as college writing programs. Jam packed with surreal gothic themes, Bunny doesn't hold back - at times laugh out loud funny, and at others incredibly creepy. Would definitely recommend.
Satire, Dark academia, magical realism, mystery. If you chucked all these in a blender, you would get Bunny. The book itself follows the protagonist Samantha as she studies writing at a prestigious school. Much of the writing in the book is an obviously mocking typical dark academia stereotypes yet it blends so seamlessly into the rest of the book, it doesn't feel like the author is trying too hard. Whilst the writing is incredible, the way this book is written isn't the easiest to understand at times. The girls call themselves 'bunny' which can confuse readers as to whose talking, but even this gives the feel of a sole entity talking that only adds to the cult like feel of the group. This is probably the first book I've seen recommended by TikTok that I would ... MoreSatire, Dark academia, magical realism, mystery. If you chucked all these in a blender, you would get Bunny. 'Bunny' simultaneously absorbs and repels. I felt as if I were sliding into a warm bath, only to wake to my head being held underwater. Violent, poetic prose that lures the reader into a nightmarish, fairytale fantasy.
This book is so bizarre in the best way possible. I couldn't put it down and NEEDED to know how it ended. I will be reading everything Mona Awad.
